| ![]() Generally they are for the most part fully matured by 6 months. If you spay before their first heat there are no mammaries developed which means no mammary cancer risk. After first heat the mammories have developed. Every heat there is also always the risk of an infection of the uterus. All studies done show no issues with spaying around 6 or 7 months. Small dogs are a lot different then larger dogs which do better waiting a bit longer to be spayed. Also it’s very normal for Yorkies to have retained baby teeth and if they say in to long they can mess up the alignment of the teeth leading to dental issues.

Due to personal experience I would like to bring up Pyometra which killed two of my babies because I did not have them spayed nor bred them. Pyometra is defined as an infection in the uterus. The uterus is also known as the womb and is where the developing the fetus is located. It is a serious and life-threatening condition that must be treated promptly and aggressively. Pyometra is often the result of hormonal changes in the reproductive tract following a heat in the dogs hormone. Levels remain elevated for eight to ten weeks and thickens the lining of the uterus in preparation for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur for several heat cycles, the lining continues to increase in thickness until cysts form within it. The thickened, cystic lining secretes fluids that create an ideal environment in which bacteria can grow. Additionally, high hormone levels inhibit the ability of the muscles in the wall of the uterus to contract and expel accumulated fluids or bacteria. The combination of these factors often leads to infection. These fluids (pus) can erupt the uterus, the pus is absorbed into the bloodstream which can become fatal. This is the reason females must be spayed before their first heat cycle which is usually at 6 months old to avoid mammary tumors and Pyometra which can be fatal as it was with my girls. I don't advise breeding unless done by experienced and knowledgeable breeders and bred to better the breed. Please spay your baby when your vet tells you the time is right.

Spaying before the 1st heat reduces the risk of cancer later in life
