Default Yorkie wanted in Georgia

Hi there everyone,
My wife and I live in GA and are looking for a Yorkie to join our family. We recently lost our little bean (her name was actually Candy) and for such a little dog, she left huge paw prints on our heart. She was our fur-baby and left us with a lifetime of wonderful memories.

Candy was our first Yorkie and we got to spend 9 years with her. We adopted her at about 5 from a family member who was unable to care for her the way she deserved to be. She was skinny, her hair was matted and I wasn't happy at first. As you can probably guess, she grew on me. After about a week, we got her cleaned up and I fell in love with that Yorkie face. Once she warmed up to us, and her personality came out, she loved to play with her squeaky toys and was also perfectly content snuggled up next to us. She loved to sandwich herself between my wife and I on a couch or laying in bed.

We have thought long and hard about getting another and want to start our search. I have seen lots of posts on this forum answering my question, however, they seem to be somewhat old and a lot of the links provided seem to go nowhere. Let me say that we are not looking for show dog. We want another Yorkie because of their spritely personality and larger-than-life hearts. My wife spoke to Ava Tyree, and that is a possible option. She has some puppies on the way. The one caveat is that they are a little on the pricey side. You get what you pay for, and she raises championship dogs.
Can anyone suggest some other reputable breeders in the GA area? I want to know I am getting a puppy from someone who raises them them the right way and in good health. Aside from that, I am not so much concerned with how many best in show awards they have.

The last thing I will say is that I want to avoid the petland-like puppy mill or puppy broker at all cost. I also realize that if advertising "teacup" Yorkie's, I will RUN the other way. You guys are the professionals, and with that I need some help!

Thanks for any and all the input you guys can provide!

I just want to educate you a little on breeders that show their dogs.

When you buy a dog from a breeder that shows their dog they are breeding for their next champion. They take all the precautions needed for that next champion. You can pretty much be assured you would be getting a healthy puppy because this is what the breeder breeds for. Not every litter will produce a champion, show quality puppy so the breeder has to sell them. They are pricey because the breeder has put a lot of money, time, effort, medical care, quality food into producing healthy puppies.
Yes, you get what you pay for, but keep in mind, breeders that show are not selling champion quality puppies, they are selling healthy puppies as pets. Your best bet for a healthy puppy is to buy from a breeder that shows their dogs. The least expensive part of owning a yorkie is the purchase price, never buy a yorkie based on the selling price, what you save on the purchase, down the road could cost you thousands for a sick dog with genetic issues. Know the breeder before you buy the pup.

We are also getting a puppy. We have our coming from Carter Yorkies and Lisa Carter. Carter Yorkies are in Moultrie, GA. You can find her webpage at carteryorkies.com. We have reserved a little girl and will hopefully be picking her up the 24th or so of November. She has a good reputation for breeding quality dogs.

Were I in your shoes, I'd correspond with breeders who are listed on the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America's "Breeders Referrals." It's organized by state.

Ask for further referrals from any of the YTCA breeders you correspond with who don't have a pup available soon (some may not have pups available for quite some time).

Best of luck--KatysMom.

I agree first stop could be ytca.org . I lived in Atlanta and Emmma came from a show breeder, Vangogh Yorkies. But I believe Emma was her last litter almost 5 years ago.

I will say that my breeder high recommends Tyava as an alternative . A good friend has a Tyava yorkie and she was very pleased with the service and her yorkie who is just a few months younger than my Emma.

GA has few reputable breeders but there are a few within driving distance such as near Birmingham AL and in NC .

Good luck with your search

The problem when you say breeding for a champion is sometimes the breed standards aren't what's best for the breed look at some of the other breeds that can't walk and can't breathe due to show standards. I have heard there are show yorkies breeders who breed dogs with Luxating Patella. There are also show breeders that have kennel step ups like little puppy mills so that is important to keep in mind when buying from a show breeder also.

Honestly you could end up with health issues no matter what way you go. I'm not a fan of dog shows and what has been done to many breeds standards so I personally stay away from show breeders. Two of mine I got on facebook that no one wanted anymore one was a young young puppy and the other a little bit older. I get pet insurance and pray for the best because at the end of the day many many things can happen. Go with the breeder you think is best follow your gut. It's best if you can see where the puppies are being raised to make sure it's not a puppy mill but unless you are a very strong willed person if you go and see the puppies in bad shape your probably going to walk away with one. If money is an issue that could be a concern because compared to how expensive puppy shots and everything puppies need are its really that smaller of the amounts. Good luck.

Don't rule out rescue yorkies. My last yorkie was a rescue and my current yorkies is rehomed, both of them were the best. My rescue yorkies need love too.

I was talking to a local breeder (sorry, I'm in Wisconsin) for several months before the breeder had a litter with pups available. Yorkies are often in small litters of 3, perhaps 4, so I understood that it might be a bit of a wait. We discussed her philosophy of breeding, she made sure I'd done my research and understood what I was going to do for and with my puppy. She breeds for the love of it, as well as for a supplemental income. She's been breeding dogs for years and has repeat customers. She retires her dogs from breeding well before they are too old, but she keeps them as house pets for their entire lives.

That being said, I was able to meet both the sire and bitch, got pictures of her being pregnant, pictures of the one day old pups, and was able to visit three different times to play with the litter and select my puppy before he was old enough to take home. I was able to see where he was living (in the living room) and see what his mom was getting fed. The breeder and I remain in touch. I make sure she gets pictures and updates on how he is doing. We actually use the same vet.

I wanted a dog to keep me company as my husband travels for work. Right now, Bon Bon is sleeping on my lap as I type. That counts as company, right?
