| 7 month old, 3 lb, afternoon couch potato Purchased a new fur baby for our home from nearby breeder. Came home late Saturday night. She is almost 7 months old, weighs 3 lbs and was spayed a week ago before we got her. I know she is adjusting to a new home but I am a little concerned about her energy level in the afternoons. The first day here, she pretty much layed curled on couch and was very trembly (which the breeder says she has been like that) . I have nutrical and gave her that 3 X throughout the day, just in case. Second day, very energetic in the morning, exploring, playing, but by the afternoon was content to pretty much lay on couch for the rest of the day, getting up occasionally. Today, same, energetic in morning, had to be encouraged to eat, but playful and exploring around. Went to vets in afternoon, so quite a bit of trembling while there. Basic exam normal. (Getting liver profile labs and BAT on thursday because of her size etc). Home and pretty content to lay and sleep on couch from 4pm to bedtime at 9. Been a long time since my previous baby was 7 months old. Is this normal? She is definitely different that my previous velcro dog who always had to be right where I was.

| I would give her more time. She has only been with you 3 days! She may be getting the laynof the land.

| She is adjusting in her own way; I know when I'm feeling overwhelmed, I tend to sleep more than usual--I think it's a coping mechanism. And with everything she's had to contend with--physically, mentally, and emotionally, I don't think it'd take much activity to wear her out now. And I'll bet before too long, with your love and patience, you'll have another little shadow!! Time, understanding, attention, love, and humor will take you both very far, which I'm sure you needn't be told! Enjoy that tiny bundle of cute!!! |

| Yes I agree, this little baby at 7 months old has only known her prev. owner, the surroundings, smells, voices. Now, she is in a strange place, everything is new to her, food schedules, smells, voices, surroundings, all so very stressful, then a trip to a new vet with a stranger. As we all know, stress in humans makes us tired, well, same thing with baby girl. Give the lil sweetie more time to adjust to her new life with you and her new home. Lots of TLC and patience. Start working on teaching basic commands, sit, stay, wait, leave it, drop it. Praise and give treats when she gets her commands right. Teach only one command at a time, work with her no more then 5 to 7 minutes at a time, several times through out the day, when she learns that one command move on to a new one, always praise with happy dance, clapping hands, make a big fuss, and give treat rewards. Training bonds pup with human.

| She probably just needs a little more time. It can take them a while to adjust.

| Lab results :( Thanks to everyone for their responses. We got our new baby's labs today, and sadly not the greatest news. Might explain some of her lack of energy in afternoons after eating on top of adjusting to a new home. Need words of wisdom before I/we contact breeder and decide on course of action.. I am somewhat devastated. Especially after losing my dear Jasmine a little over a month ago. A few facts before the labs. The breeder gives a a two week window to make sure all is a "good fit" with her babies. If not, she gives us option of picking another pup, or getting our money back. We have had our baby since Saturday (11/11, and of course started to fall in love with her. Her vet exam showed grade I luxating patella's and retained canine baby teeth (which will need to be removed at some point). She was spayed by breeder's vet 3 days before we got her. Her labs show: Glucose 116-slightly elevated, bun-23-normal, total protein 5.3, slightly low (5.5-7.5), Alt 13-slightly low (18-121), AST and ALP normal, bilirubin- normal, Bile acid pre 1.2 (0-6.9) Bile acid post 34.2 (0-14.9). My vet is on vacation till next Wednesday. These were called to me by another vet in office who has not seen Callie. I would think based on all my reading next medical step would be to get an Ultrasound at minimum.

| Breeder says she usually waits till Canines are at least 1/2 in before pulling baby teeth. On the BAT results, she says she has had dogs with post in 50's who lived long lives, and that her Vet goes more on the pre-prandial number, which is normal, so she thinks I should not worry about it. I just have bad feelings about everything at this point. It makes me sad. I am leaning toward returning her before I get any more attached, yet feeling very guilty about that.

| But that is partly what is weird. Everything I read on this site, and from other people who have gotten dogs from her that I contacted had glowing things to say about her. Healthy dogs, careful breeding to keep the breed "pure" for lack of a better word.

| So sorry to hear you received not such a good report from your vet on your new baby. I myself could never give a baby back, I would do all that had to be done for this innocent little baby, but that is just me. I pray you make the right decision.

| If she breeds dogs with not perfect blood work she’s not a good breeder. Bad breeders are extremely well at tricking people. What breeder is it?

| We got our fist little girl and found out that she had liver shunt. Our options were to give her back to the breeder who would almost certainly just put her down or to pay for the surgery to get her fixed. She is curled up in my lap right now. Extra money for the Science Diet food she will have to eat for the rest of her life and the Denamarin that we give her every night in her dinner to make sure her liver gets as much extra help as we can give it. Would not trade to love we get from her if it cost ten times as much.
