New member saying hello I will be adopting my Yorkie later this week. He's a 4 yr old much loved fur baby who has to be rehomed due to new baby is allergic. Current owner is crushed to say the least. I will be posting pics soon. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your soon to be new baby. So sad for his owner. Good thing is, you will know about his past. I have a surrender 2.5 years now and stay in touch with prev.owner, send pics and videos which are much appreciated. |
Thanks for the welcome Thanks for the welcome. Yes it is a plus that I will know all about him. I guess he only weighs 3 pounds which scares me just a little. Lol. But he is housebroke, crate trained and registered. Only thing I need to do is get his shots updated and get him neutered. And he actually eats the same dog food that my other two dogs do. Any tips that anyone may have for a tiny dog would be much appreciated. |
CONGRATS :)!!! Looking forward to seeing the little punkin'. Give him tons of TLC as this will be a huge change for him, poor guy. But it sounds like he found his new furever home, so that's great. You'll do fine w/ a little one. If you're nervous, buy him a little bell for his collar. Do you need steps for your bed or sofa...? |
I hadn't thought about a bell. And not sure about steps. I will know more when I actually see him and talk more with his owner. She said he is crate trained for when they are gone and at night for the most part. But the rest of my crew sleep with me at night. So I would imagine he will too at some point. |
awww exciting! |
Excited and nervous too Yes I am excited for sure. But also a tad nervous. I had no plans to add another dog. But my friend posted him on Facebook for her Neice and his pic grabbed my heart. I figured there were probably a ton of people asking for him especially cause he is so small. But I messaged her anyway, first to say how cute he was, and then to ask questions. Less than 24 hours later she is saying she would love for me to have him as she felt this was where he needed to be. Kind of a whirlwind for sure. |
Oh, I understand. He is a wee little one? Mine are not the smallest of yorkies, but they were both the "runts" of their litter...my girl is very petite boned compared to my boy. Looking forward to seeing your pics, must be adorable! |
Yes my friend says he fits it the palm of her hands. Very well behaved. I'm sure he will be nervous and confused at first. But I'm off the weekend and that should help greatly I hope. |
Oh wow- that is tiny.... Yes, I am sure it will be an adjustment but that's wonderful you are taking him in! |
His name is Kanya. Not super excited about that but figure he has enough changes coming he doesn't need to have his name changed on top of that |
Lol you can probably use something that sounds very similar eventually And he won't mind lol. We have so many nicknames we call ours lol. Looking forward to pics! Love Yorkie boys! (Love my girl too lol). |
Yes I am sure he will have a nick name soon. Lol.when I told her a lot of people would be interested in him because of his size and using him for breeding she said she hadn't thought about that. But in the same breath I said let me call my vet and see how much to get him neutered she said that is when she knew for sure this is where he needed to be. |
Oh a little tiny like that wouldn't be used for breeding... Edited to add- should not be. |
Sound exciting welcome to the forum. |
My surrender name was THEODORE what a mouth full for me lol. My last two girls one named Schnae the other was Matese. When I had to call one of them fast their name came out as Mashea lol so I KNEW Theodore would never cut it. I changed his name to Cody before I left my vets office where I adopted him from. He adjusted quickly. I like the name of Kanya and only 2 syllables not 3 like THE-O-DORE lol. yes many nick names he will have. And yes, if I have to call Cody fast Mashea still comes out lol. |
Oh yes I know, but some people would not care. She is excited that she will be able to get weekly updates on him and everything. Said it makes things easier for her. |
Hello and welcome |
Be patient and understanding; big changes for a little guy. You can't be too careful with one so small...Never, ever allow him outside without someone supervising (remember danger can come from above in the way of hawks, etc); just be ever-vigilant, inside and out! I think his current name is great and unusual and I think you're great to adopt this baby. Have a good time and congratulations. |
Do you think it would be wise to invest in a set of stairs? For the couch and bed? Or should he be okay? I just want to make sure I have everything covered for when he comes home. |
I am no expert, but I think you might want to wait on purchasing items, in order to get a better feel for Kanya's behavior, possible issues, etc. Being so tiny, you don't want him jumping (or falling) off of furniture because he could hurt his little self! Mind you, I say this having had no luck in deterring my 9lb girl from jumping off everything--cuz the split second it takes for me to 'help' her down is just too long to wait!! You'll know what works for your little gentleman very shortly after getting him home, I'll bet! |

It sounds like this guy has not had much vet care. I would advise taking him for a checkup right away to a vet who has some knowledge of Yorkies and their health issues. Since you don't know who bred this dog you just want to be sure of what you are going to be dealing with. I hope all goes well for you and him. Please share your experience.:) |
Actually he has had vet care his whole life. Well cared for and very loved. She said his shots are due this month and she just had a baby not long ago and just hasnt had time to get them done. I will be getting all his vet records when he comes. I am waiting to see what all he comes with before I do much shopping for him. They are bringing him to me at work either thursday or friday. So he gets to hang out with me at work before actually coming home. Beyond excited for sure. |
I can practically feel your excitement and I'm excited for you!!! You and he are gonna be great together!! |
Im glad that i am off the weekend. It will help woth introductions and to help him feel at home. |
I called-in to work the first three--yep, three--days after bringing Piper home! And of course, it was more for my peace-of-mind than for her--she was, in fact, pretty fine, but I just had to be certain...!!! You're going to have theee best weekend everrrrr!!! |
Well guys Cayn in home. Thankfully his name is like Cain and Abel not Kahne like west. Lol. They brought him to me at work last night. So he got to hang out with me and all my residents, he is absolutely an angel. I'm actually going to talk to my administrator and see if he can start coming to work with me a couple evenings a week. To me he looks a little thin, but will know more as he goes to vet on Monday for shots and neutering. Introductions are going slow but good with the rest of my crew. He slept all night in his crate beside my bed with no problems. He was taught good manners in his last home for sure. And I think he already loves me as much as I love him. Lol. Any advice on how to fatten this little thing up just a little? |
Awe how exciting! Can't wait to see pics! Is he undernourished or just small boned n thin? My girl is a completely diff build then my boy and they eat the same exact food. |
Hes thin but little boned and long legged lol. So far i have tried dog food and cottage cheese. He wants nothing to do with either.lol. |
I know first couple of days is sometimes hard, can you soak the food or sprinkle w grated cheeee? I ended up changing my guys food he came with bc he just wouldn't eat it. |
