crazydoglade, I completely agree. I have a 15 year old son, but he was never disruptive in public. I've left a cart full of groceries in the store and took him home a couple of times to teach him I wouldn't put up with him not holding onto the cart (instead of running loose in the store). Only took a couple of times, and he never did it again. I also got him from hiding from me in the clothes rounders in a department store. I hid from him until he cried. When I came out, I asked him would he ever hide from he again. He never did. I also don't listen to whining. If he would whine, I would tell him I didn't understand whining and come back when he could talk. We also took our son outside if we were in a restaurant and he was not feeling up to par (which was very rare). We took turns eating. Now, my son's favorite place to eat is Olive Garden. We have to go to a neighboring city to go (a minimum hour drive), and I'm not paying $60-70 for us to eat and sit next to whining/crying kids/babies. Yes, I have asked to be moved. Sorry if people don't like it. I control my child -- you control yours. I know some may feel these things are cruel, but I never wanted my child to be a burden on other people. They are in public to shop or eat -- not listen to my child act out. I've never gotten a complaint about my only child being selfish or ill-mannered. That makes me proud. I would much rather EAT with a restaurant full of dogs than whining/crying children.

Good job taking responsibility for your son. i gave birth to five beautiful children and am regularly shocked by the lack of parenting I see around me. We have our moments but like you said- walk that child out and handle it! My father would never have allowed me to behave as such in public nor are my children allowed to be rude and disruptive. It is sad but true, there are many parents who do not share that sentiment. Amen.

Side note- my fourth one threw me for a loop, I swear he was a gift from God to educate me about being too prideful for my very well mannered children. He has given me humility and strengthened my commitment to the values we are talking about, he is high functioning autistic with a sensory processing disorder and he was a game changer for sure! He is still required to behave appropriately.

Wow! Don't waste your time and energy on being upset. As a third party observing, I see the whole event as hilarious. Just confirms my belief that "trashy people" come in all shapes, sizes and economic statuses. Nice clothes, neat appearance DOES NOT necessarily equal nice person!

Kudos to you! Don't know your age, but in my childhood & my two daughters, which are 36 & 39, we were MADE to behave. I never had a problem with my two little girls shopping or in a restaurant. Riding in a cart & if they reached to touch something without me helping them, they got a good smack on the hands. They got their feeling hurt more than busting out crying. I did not tolate crying either, took them straight out of the store. My two were never put in the church nursery. They were made to sit still & be quite. With their growing up years lots of teachers, co-workers, friends, etc. have said my two were such a delight to be around. And our little Yorkies are such a delight also. Would rather shop with Yorkies than kids.

I am 48 and the product of a father who would not tolerate acting like an idiot (his word not mine) in public. I also am the product of Catholic school and being taught to behave by nuns and strict lay teachers. We were also expected to sit and listen in church, and if we didn't, not only did we catch it from daddy but would also get it from the Priest and nuns (who could see everything -- it was amazing!). My Yorkies are wonderful, too! I love my furbabies and realize everyone might not feel the same way; however, don't go into a store that allows animals and then complain. As my daddy would have said, that's acting like an idiot!

Omg PREACH!!! How dang true is this!!??!! I'm totally just *floored* by what some parents allow with their children in public - just blown away.
