Grooming Question

Hi All, I have 2 quick questions for now, our little girl is 3 months old today when should she go for her 1st cut. Next if anyone from St. Charles / O'fallon Mo. area knows of a good groomer please let me know. Thanks LWC

@LWC - sorry I can't help you; however, great question YT question. I'm in Atlanta GA. Is there anyone on YT that can recommend a good Yorkie groomer and vet? I'm actually in Vining area of GA....

You could easily just groom her yourself and then she would never be vulnerable/alone at the groomers, which can be very traumatic for so many dogs.

But if you want to take her, wait until all her shots are done.

@Wylie's Mom - great idea thanx! I am visiting Biscuit this week ... I'll ask the breeder if she would be willing to teach me how to groom him ... at least keep him in well trimmed state. PERFECT!!

Tons of videos on youtube. When you visit places like PetSmart, watch how the groomers do it too. Make sure you have the emergency kit handy (like styptic powder).

If you do decide to groom yourself, place a non slip mat on the surfaces of both the table and bathtub/sink.

I don't think my wife would let me get close to her little Mia with a clipper and scissors, she's not crazy about the idea that I've cut my own hair for about 15 years

Tell her it would be a couples' activity where the two of you would spend time to bond~ (or fight...) LOL

I know there are a lot of great groomers out there but I prefer doing it at home b/c I'm paranoid after hearing all the horror stories. -_-

I'm not a professional groomer, but I don't fancy the typical 'puppy cut' by groomers, so this is what I do...

I have Scottie stand on a box covered with a big piece of paper - paper for easy clean up. Then I comb out the hair. Then I cut a straight line from the hind leg to the front leg, so that the hair is hanging straight to their belly. And then the same on the other side. I also trim a little bit in the area between the hind legs and the area between the front legs.

Then for the face, I grab the hair below his chin and trim straight across, as short or as long as I want to keep it. I trim the sides of his face too, but I think I need a diagram - can't really describe it.

It wasn't hard for me to get started. If you hold their face and they're willing to stand still, you're set. Both Scottie and Casie love it. They always look like they're enjoying themselves as if they were being pampered

If you struggle a bit at first, just do a little at a time - different sections on different days. Hair always grows back. But if you do a little at a time, the pups will gradually get used to it. And then you can take your time with the trimming, eyeballing it, kind of like the art of trimming a bonsai tree. If you're afraid of handling the pup with scissors, try using children scissors - they're less intimidating. Amazon.com : Westcott Classic Kids Scissors,... I use something like these on their paws and ears.
