| Intro and asking advice- Hello YorkieTalk! I've been reading through the forums for a while now. What a great resource! It helped us decide that a Yorkie was the dog for us. We picked up Daisy (yes, another Daisy) last week and things have been going pretty well. We took her to the vet last week too, and he said she's doing great. She's about 2 lbs and so far hasn't had any issues eating. We're taking her back this week for her second round of shots (first round was done before she came home with us). She's also doing pretty well on the pad training. She has made the occasional mistake, but I would guess that about 90% of the time she'll run over to her pad without prompting when she has to go. We do sometimes have to remind her, and like I said, she has made the occasional mess. Our plan is to eventually transition to using the bathroom outdoors, but it's been cool and rainy here so we're just taking her out when it is nice. We'll work on it in earnest when it is warmer out. So here is where the questions come in... We're keeping her in a 3' by 3' playpen at night. She has potty pads, a wire crate with a comfy bed, food, water, and toys. I'm trying to stick to a "bedtime" and so far it's about 50/50 if she'll just go into her crate and lay down or come to the gate and whine loudly. If she whines, it will get louder until she is crying. We have been just ignoring this. She does give up and go to sleep after a while. It's also about 50/50 that she will be crying when my wife gets up. So my question here is: is there something we can do better here, or do we just have to be patient? My other question is about play. She is very friendly and playful, but once she gets excited she goes after hands and toes and pants legs. We are being patient and giving her toys when she does this. It never seems aggressive, and it is actually pretty gentle. Like a nibble or she is just mouthing. Is this just a puppy thing, or a terrier thing, or teething? My worry is that she won't grow out of it and it will eventually begin to hurt. If she gets too excited we have been saying "ouch!" loudly and she does back off, but often comes right back. And she will play with toys, but is usually more interested in the hand "behind" the toy. Thanks in advance for your help! -Brad PS - Sorry about the images. Not sure how to rotate. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome. Congrats on your new little one! Yup, it's patience patience patience as far as the crying at night and potty thing. It's such a pain to go through, but you will get there. You could try comforting things like a Momma-sized stuffed dog to cuddle with, pheromones, aromatherapy balms rubbed on ears, white noise machine (!!!!). As far as the mouthiness - you have it correct - it's a puppy thing and a teething thing. Puppies learn a ton via interacting w/ the world thru their mouths, so they want to mouth everything. EVERYTHING. Continue to yell "ouch" and/or make a yelping sound like her littermate would make if hurt by her. And then hand her a toy instead.
