biting/chewing Hi everyone!! I was just curious since this is my first time owning a puppy. All my other dogs were just a tad older. My puppy has a selection of toys to play with but would rather chew on my hand. She is between 6-8 weeks old. I wish I knew her actual age but is that normal?

Magnus did the same. I made the mistake of keep letting him and later had issues with nipping hard. Get a small baby face towel, soak it in water (you can soak it in chicken broth also but no sodium added), and freeze it. Try giving her that when she wants to nom at your fingers.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Since she is way too young to be away from her Mom, she will show that in these behaviors which would normally be mitigated by her Mom and litter mates. Make sure when she bites you that you squeal just like a littermate would.

Hi there. Definitely redirect the chewing to a toy or my yorkie's favourite: bully sticks. They are much better than rawhide sticks, but usage should be supervised. Have fun!

I actually put my hand in my puppies mouths a lot when they are little and I don't have any trouble with any of them biting. They need to know exactly how hard they can bite when playing around with you, although I am not a "rough house" kind of person with my pups. Also make sure you are teaching the puppy to take treats gently from you. My older Yorkie will sometimes nip at me when I give him treats (I got him at 9 years old) but my puppies would never bite at my hand when I feed them. I did the yipping thing and boy does it work! They know immediately that they hurt you and I would do that even if it wasn't really hurting, but if I really felt it at all I would yip. Only once did my puppy leave an indent on my finger and boy did I holler loud that time! LOL Scared the poor puppy, but never have they come close to breaking skin or anything like that. I put my hands in their mouths so that if a small child were to not know what they were doing, my puppies will know not to bite them.

A package of soft puppy nylabones is a good investment. I would keep one in my pocket and on coffee tables so it was always available.
