Question about Biewers When I take my Biewer to the vet, (Lacy has seen three vets who have never heard of a Biewer) they put down "Terrier Mix" for the breed. Is this correct? Doesn't seem so to me, shouldn't it say Biewer Terrier instead of Terrier Mix? Do I need to educate the vet that a Biewer is a registered Breed? Or is Terrier Mix acceptable? I am just curious. lol |
I would tell the vet's office your preference. On the one hand, it's just a piece of paper at your vet's office and doesn't really make a difference in health care. But, I understand it being bothersome. The first time I took Max to our current vet's office, the receptionist asked me to identify his breed. I said Yorkshire Terrier and she said that his ears were "enormous" so he didn't look like a Yorkie. Being a proud momma, my feelings were hurt. |
We are all just so proud of our pups, we want them to have their due appreciation. No one should say a Yorkie doesn't look like a Yorkie because his ears are too big, good grief. |
AKC calls them Biewer Terriers. I would simply ask the vet to put that on the records. |

OP, I get the "he can't be a yorkie" comment all the time. I even got it once from someone here. Yorkie or not, I don't care. Kaji is my baby. As long as he's my cuddlebug baby, he could be whatever you want him to be. (Can you tell I get that comment VERY often ) |

Does it matter who she is replying to? I asked a question because it didn't make sense to me and I was trying to "get it". I was wondering if the vet does not know what a Biewer is or if he said he is not a Beiwer because of a certain look. |
We have a lot of pups on this forum who are not yorkies. I don't see why that is a concern. Are you all saying that a biewer is a yorkie? If so, I could see why someone might question that; but it is a topic I avoid here because it is similar to discussing religion or politics. Everyone has his/her own opinion and it leads to out of control silliness. Bottom line...again, I love all of my pups. Purebred, mix or whatever they are and don't care what anyone calls them. None of them, nor I need any validation whatsoever. There is not a dog alive that I think is any less or more than another. They are totally awesome |

A Biewer is a BREED, I would insist my vet record my pup as a Biewer Terrier. Vets need to be aware there is now a NEW BREED which is known as a Biewer Terrier. Because my now passed girl weighed in as an adult at 17 lbs my vet thought she was a Silky because of her size. I told my vet her AKC papers read Yorkshire Terrier and that is what she is. I would be insulted if I owned a Biewer and my vet recorded my pup as a TERRIER MIX. If it were me, and the vet would not record my dogs proper breed I would find a vet that would, but that is just ME lol. |

I felt better immediately when I brought Max to the backroom to be weighed and the rest of the staff, including vets, turned around and squealed with delight, "Look at the Yorkie!" (we live in big dog country, so a Yorkie in full coat is a novelty) OP Sharon, during one of our vet visits, a new tech referred to Max as "she" and "her" repeatedly. I corrected her each time and the tech replied, "With hair like that, looks like a girl." She meant it as a funny compliment, but I didn't let it slide because to me that does speak to quality of care. If they can't get my dog's gender right, then I would worry about serious errors. |

To the OP, I think it'll all come in time with the training and your sanity will return. |

But yeah, they should know gender even if our boys look a bit feminine. :D |

I am just so used to it that I simply advise the person of the sex...sometimes I don't even do that. Not people I am going to see again anyway. Now vet and vet techs? Uh, yeah they should know who they are seeing. |
Piper wears metal ties (as in menswear) and a little rhinestone bowtie with certain sweaters cuz I just think she looks sooo danged cute in 'em. And sure enough, my little girl, who is rather a tomboy, gets the cute little fella comments! I like to think she's just well-rounded and in touch with both her feminine and masculine side...yeah, right!! |
The puppy you received from the breeder in Washington only breeds Biewers. Biewer Terriers are from one particular group of breeders who call them BT. BT believe their dogs are from a mix of dogs 90% of the breeders breed Biewers not BT. Kathy registers her dogs as Biewers. Biewers are not a mixed breed. I have introduced many a vet to Biewers and their standard. If you own or buy a rare breed dog, I believe it is your responsibility to educate your vet. Just because they haven't heard of a Biewer, doesn't give them the right to mislabel the dog or identity it as a mixed terrier. |

I appreciate you letting me know that I need to educate the vets that she is not a mixed breed. I will do that. I will find something on the web that I can copy and give to them. Thanks! |

BT is Biewer Terrier. Kathy doesn't sell Biewer Terriers. She sells Biewers. Verbage is important. I'm hoping Lacy is feeling better soon. |

I am now confused also lol, so a Biewer is not in the family of terriers. |
This website has a lot of information on Biewers and Parti Yorkies. http://www.snowblueyorkies.com/parti...difference.htm This makes sense to me as to how the color came about. What do you all think? There are several pages of information if you go to her home page as well. |

But I believe that 2 years ago, the AKC accepted the Bewier as a separate breed, is that not correct? |

Is the Biewer recognized by the AKC? In May of 2014, the AKC’s FSS division provisionally accepted the "Biewer Terrier" as a new breed. Here is the statement AKC provided about the “Biewer Terrier” on their website. "The Biewer Terrier is being recorded in the AKC Foundation Stock Service® - So what exactly does that mean??? |
I think it means they are recognised as a new breed but not fully accredited by the AKC. From what I understand, they can't compete in AKC conformation shows yet. I'm sure the Biewer Terrier Breeders on the forum will be able to better explain this to us. |
