She did say though she has had the yorkie for 1 year and been with the bf for 2 years. So the bf was in the picture first, but the yorkie doesn't realize that, with him coming into her house. I wonder though, did she not discuss her getting a dog with the bf? Why not? |
.....and I certainly would never get rid of a tried and true and loyal and loving friend, to accommodate a man....but that is from years and years of first hand experience dealing with and watching men and relationships rise and fall by the wayside. Trust me, that pup will be devoted to you long after that man hits the highway at a trot! Absolutely, one hundred percent agree, Yorkiemom1...I, too, am "old school" and glad for it... |

Smart Pup Hello, I have a 2 year old baby girl that I got from a coworker in March. Lexi is super smart and will potty outside and lets us know when she needs to go as long as we are home. But when we leave for work or she is alone she pees in the same spot EVERY single time. I don't know what to do. Please help! |

You should really start your own thread on this, you will much more answers then hi-jacking this thread. |
I said discuss w her Bf, not ask permission. There is a difference! |

Welcome to YT. You have to clean that spot where there is no smell that the pup can smell. There are enzyme cleaners and also vinegar works pretty well. If it is a carpeted area, steam clean it VERY well first, then use the enzyme cleaner as directed or add vinegar to spot and let it dry. Then consider pee pad training her if you are gone too long for her hold it. |
In the end, the answer is to lose the BF and keep the Yorkie. IF she were my daughter, I would tell her that. If he were my son, I would tell him to just get out of the relationship instead of blaming it on the dog. |
I think it is reasonable to ask and also to be Part of the solution of training this puppy. That is reasonable for the man to ask this to be done. Not reasonable if the first goto was actually to get rid of the dog! The OP made the decision to purchase this puppy and is ultimately and predominately responsible for correcting the problems her lack of training of this dog created. I would not rush to presume or assume that the facts are as stated - what has been omitted? this is only one persons side of the storyline. But for sure she is doing this dog no favours in the way she has raised it. Behavioural issues are one of the prime reasons dogs are surrendered and quite frankly new homes can be hard to find for these dogs. |

I beg to differ on the main reason for surrender being training. It is because people believe pups are second class beings and disposable. If I had a nickel for every woman who gave up her yorkie for a man or a child, I would have a nice little stash of money. They love, love, love their yorkies until something else comes along to love. NOT saying this is the case with the OP. I have no idea what this person or her boyfriend are about..I can only go by what she said and her boyfriend is sadly not unique. I STILL say that I would dump any person who asked me to get rid of my pups. Again, they are living beings and anyone who makes a suggestion like that probably should never own a pup. There are MANY people who should not own pups. Her boyfriend would not have moved into my home ... I would have known how he felt about my pup and my guess is she knew. Poor pup....I hate these stories so very much. I don't have any feelings for the OP or her boyfriend....it is the pup who ends up with the short end of the stick and it is disgusting that this happens. I will never sadly live to see animals have rights, but I believe one day it may be a reality. The other main issue for surrenders is medical issues that people cannot afford. I have spoken with many, many rescuers and the bottom line is that yorkies honestly are one of if not THE most high maintenance pups out there. And, I am not referring to general maintenance and grooming. It's funny, I was just talking with an all breed rescuer yesterday and she said exactly that. The list of problems with yorkies these days is so long....it gets worse and worse. Why? Popularity...people like Paris Hilton (gag) ... and everyone wants a pocket pup. And, crap breeders are more than willing to fill that demand and sell to anyone with a few bucks in hand. :{ All that indisciminate breeding is ruining the breed ....and putting poor innocent living beings in horrible places. I wish a celebrity would step out with a stuffed animal from Build A Bear and start a new fad. |
Linda I did not say main I said prime meaning (at least in my mind) one of the top 4 or 5 reasons dogs are surrendered. Health issues of course are in the top 5 for sure. I don't find my yorkie to be anymore higher maintenance than my Blackies. In fact he is much lower maintenance. So why is a Yorkie high maintenance? What do you mean by that? |
Off the top of my head and I am sure there are other things that could be added to this list. Most of these things that we see more often than in other breeds. Dentals usually needed yearly - I cannot tell you how many come to me never having had one :( Main reason: money .. people should be told when they purchase/adopt a yorkie about the need for this and the cost luxating patellas cruciate ligament tears pancreatitis collapsing trachea IBD LCP HGE allergies lymphangectasia GME PDA PRA They also are not pups that children should be carrying around or rough housing with....the accidents I have seen from them being dropped is very troubling. My vet one day was joking with me about how did I pick this breed? |
Too late to edit, but how I forgot these is beyond me...... Liver Shunt Microvascular Dysplasia |
Thanks Linda for explaining you were talking about health issues. And for sure they can be daunting in the Yorike breed. But for general maintenance for sure dentals. Most large breeds (but not all) have no need for yearly dentals if you as the owner care for their teeth. For my large breed - and it can be quite devastating - hip and elbow dysplasia - CCL Tears - thyroid dysfunction - PRA and Cataracts. and heart disease. Also allergies - ear infections and cancer to the toenail and nose.... |

Bottom line is that yorkies are becoming one of the worst breeds in terms of having medical issues and people simply are not prepared to deal with the financial repercussions. One bout of pancreatitis can be extremely expensive...if treated properly. If not, they often die. :( It is a very common issue with yorkies. |

I was going to go thru and highlight the sentences/thoughts/ideas/feelings, that I found exceptionally agreeable.... turns out, that would have been the entire post, so I just give the entire thought process a thumbs up. I also remember the craze, Pet Rocks....maybe we can revive THAT!!! |

This is secondary to people that look at a Yorkie, see nothing but dollar signs, turn around and breed that yorkie they know NOTHING about what conditions/diseases/etc are in THAT dog's lines, nor in the lines behind the dog they use to breed with, and gleefully have a litter of God only knows what kind of genetic disasters, turn around and dump them on unsuspecting, uninformed buyers, who gleefully see the same $$$$ and start breeding for vacations and paying for all the goodies in their lives.... and the entire thing is nothing more than a heart break and a train wreck waiting to happen.....and dump them QUICKLY, before they are responsible for shots or before those little time bombs start to get sick and die off.... And then there are the people that indiscriminately throw anything MIXED with a Yorkie, together, to cover Christmas or a great summer vacation, or new carpet for the house.....they know absolutely NOTHING about the genetic diseases and malformations their dog has lurking in its pedigree, and they know nothing about the dog they are using to breed with.....this aint like baking a cake, throwing crap together and crossing your fingers hoping it all turns out OK....then even more tragically, peddling these little time bombs onto a non suspecting buyer....but that is what I see happening every single day......so very tragic, the destruction of such a noble breed, by nothing more than ignorance and greed. |

I started rescuing in 2005 .. it was after that, maybe 2006 or 2007 when yorkies hit that AKC popularity list that I have grown to despise. I remember at the time that a friend of mine predicted just what has happened....of course there were problems then, but OMG they have multiplied AND the numbers of yorkies being dumped and/or surrendered now are unbelievable. Unless you live it, you simply could not comprehend....it is out of control. |
Oh and yes on the Pet Rocks! |

What does fiat lux mean? |
Quote:
The Latin phrase fiat lux, from the Latin Vulgate Bible, is typically translated as "let there be light" when relating to Genesis 1:3 (Hebrew: "יְהִי אוֹר"). Fits this OP |
