How did you choose your Yorkie's name?
 

I thought it would be fun to see where some of our Yorkie names comes from. If there is any background feel free to share that as well. I hope this is intersting for everyone to read. I know I would love to hear how others chose their pups names.

I will start.

Teek. I brought him home and he wouldn't respond to his old name. My husband kept saying he looked like an Ewok from Star Wars, so I looked up Ewok names and read a bunch and Teek caught my attention. I said Teek to him and his ears perked right up. I called him Teek and he came right to me. Within 2 days he knew that was his name and responded well to it.

Raksha. Raksha is my daughter's puppy. She got to pick her name. Raksha was a character in a book she had read. It means "protector" and it is also the name of the wolf mother who took in the child Mowgli in The Jungle Book. My daughter loved the name and the character so that became her name. It fits her well as she protects her smaller brother.

Rowan. I was getting Raksha's brother, so I was leaning toward an R name. My daughter suggested Rowan and at first I blew it off because one of my all time favorite books is The Rowan, by Anne McCaffery. It is about a girl, so I saw it as a girl's name but hers is really a title more than a name. I ended up going back to the name and looking it up online and it is traditionally a Celtic boys name and it made my short list of names and ultimately the one we decided on.

Buddybear. Dh wanted to call him "Buuuuud", like in the Cosby show where the smallest girl gave her neighbour friend the name of Buuuuud because she didn't like his real name.

I thought, no way. My younger son saw his picture and thought he looked like a bear.

I decided I could live with Buddybear. . . So that name stuck.

I was thinking about Toby, but apparently I don't get much of a choice. Lol. Dh doesn't know it yet but eventually we will have another one which I will name.

We had a list for Teek of names we thought about. Tobias was at the top of the list and I would have called him Toby for short. However when I said Tobias or Toby he just did not respond in any way. The very first time I said Teek to him he just perked up and he still does that same thing 8 months later. he loves his name and his ears go up every time I say his name.

For both of mine (Lucy and piper ) it was the first name I thought of when I saw them for the first time.

Hi! I've been absent for a long time and added a 2nd Yorkie! The very 1st Yorkie I had was the runt of the litter so she was tiny, but I thought "she's such a little Twinkie!" So I gave her one of those elaborate names for show dogs, Zsa Zsa's Princess Twinkle, and just called her Twinkie. My 2nd Yorkie, when I joined this forum, I got at 8 weeks old. Her name was Barretta, but I knew I would change it. She wouldn't acknowledge that name anyway. I tried Bella and that was ignored. My 1st Yorkie I would sometimes call my little Boo, so I spoke Booberry and my little pup came running. Boo is her chosen name. It was a good thing I didn't call her Bella because just before Boo turned 1, I adopted her half sister who was born a few months after her. Because the new girl was already accustomed to Bella I kept it. Now the 2 of them have a celebrity name of BooBella (bubela) and they are loved.

We named him bear but one day our cute little Yorkie went into the pantry and got a potato and took it to his bed. We changed his name to Spud.

"Rin" is short for Rinesme, which is a Japanese name. My daughter acquired Rin for her 16th birthday, and at that time she was crazy for everything Anime (Japanese comics of a sort). So we call her Rin, but the name always makes me think of a Wren or little bird....which is perfect because she's so tiny.

Tyson, well, I had him for well over a week before we decided on a name. I wanted something that fit his personality. I was in the kitchen making dinner and once again "little no name" was sitting with my husband trying to chew on his ear. He was always biting my husband's ear and Rin's ears. So DH was pulling him down, and said "who do you think you are, Mike Tyson?" I came out of the kitchen and said "that's it, that's his name!" Obviously I wasn't gonna name him Mike, so Tyson it is :D

I named Tinkerbell after Paris Hilton's dog... (SMH)
I was 16, so that is my excuse - but her name fits her perfectly, it was meant to be :D

Do you know that Renesme is a name from the Twilight series as well? It is the name of the daughter of Bella and Edward. I think it is a really cool name partly because my middle name is Renee.

Anyway, how old is Rinesme now? My daughter just got a Yorkie for her 17th birthday this year and her name is Raksha. She is also crazy about Anime as well! When/if my daughter moves out she will take her Yorkie with her, which will be sad because I have the full brother to her and it will be sad when they are separated so I hope she doesn't move far so they can still see each other. LOL

That is so cute!! When I got Spice I already had my Sugar . I named her Snickers at first because she reminded me of a Snickers bar. But then a friend said how about Spice ? And she loves that name. Her name on papers is something Happy something. I would have to get them out to see but I didnt like any of the names in her family! LOL So I have Sugar n' Spice!

I love reading all the names and the reason's why they were chosen, too cute!

I dreamed of owning a Yorkie for many years so therefore I wanted a name that would be unique! After days of researching the meanings behind names, I came up with Yazmin Divine.
The name Yazmin is of an Aribic origin, pronounced as JAZ-min. It's also the modern English spelling for Jasmine which came from the Jasmine Flower. The Jasmine flower means "A *gift* from God". I couldn't imagine her name being anything different because I do believe my flower's a gift from God ;)

I'm a bit of a scifi geek and one of the shows I watched was "Sanctuary". One of the main character's name was Helen Magnus. The name Magnus just stuck with me and when I saw the meaning (Great), I thought was a perfect name for a yorkie personality!

Bf actually named ours. I"m terrible at picking names. I've wanted to change my own name since forever. I've hated my own name ever since I learned how to spell it in kindergarten bc I didn't like the way it looked, but could never think of anything better. Anyway, bf said let's call her Uni after my favorite food, which is uni the sushi (sea urchin) so yes another japanese name here. We thought about our next one would be called Unagi (another fave of mine) but we ended up with Toto who is a failed foster (he came with that name). We call him Turtle bc he's so slow on walks, but while fetching he is a lightning bolt! But I like the sound of Uni and Toro too. There is an Uni and Toro on Youtube. They are from Japan!

I also had the honor of naming another foster who sadly passed away a few years ago. He was very small and was found as a stray. I can't believe he survived on the streets. He was so matted he had to be completely shaved down and he looked like a chihuahua bc of it. When I went to pick him up to go home I was talking to him trying to come up with a name. I immediately thought of Scraps (from Corpse Bride) bc he was SO skinny and Scrappy (as in Scrappy Doo from Scooby Doo) bc he was tough, so it stuck. And as you can see from my signature, his name just grew and grew and he kept "earning" titles. El Lenguo and the Handicaped Ninja are esp my faves.

I was planning on naming him Bentley cause it's a city in Yorkshire, England. But when my daughter and I were picking him up she called him by the name my dh had suggested - Sgt. Pepper - and he ran to her. So that was it. Anyway, Bentley seems too stuffy a name for him. We call him Pepper.

BTW my dh is the drummer in a 60s band so it fits.

Attachment 407259Actually, our selection was based on extensive research and life experiences. When that didn't work - we went on Skype and our Grandkids (all three) decided on the name Charlie!

RIP to my Troy but he was named after Troy Bolton (Zach Efron's character from High School Musical). My daughter picked the name because at the time she was only 6 and that was what she was into.

After Troy's passing we went through scenarios of what kind, sex, names of dogs and Emma was the name for a female dog we were considering. I actually didn't go with that breed of dog but when I got notice that we were getting a little female yorkie, I told the breeder Emma since that's what we agreed on. It was a few weeks before we were going to bring her home but when I pulled up (surprised) my daughter with the puppy she was like what's her name. I say Emma and she just looks and smiles.

Why don't you change your name then? I go by a nickname, I have for many many years (Jade) and I am actually just about to go and get my name legally changed to it. It isn't too far off my real name and I just prefer Jade. I would change toto to Toro, the dog probably wouldn't even notice. I took in a rescue several years ago named Gabby who was named after some little kid show I had never heard off, Like Yo, Gabby Gabby or something like that. My husband looked at her and said, how about Abby, from NCIS. Yup, she never noticed the difference in her name without the G and eventually realized that when I called her Abigail, I was talking to her. We would come up with covert nicknames for someone to go check on her and after a while she would realize those were here too. Rainbow, Crayola, Sparkles (she was mostly white) and she would always catch on, but if we said "Go see what Abby is doing." She would come running and we never saw what she was into, so we would say "Go see what Sparkles is doing." Then one of the kids could sneak up on her, for a while, then a new code name would be suggested.

My Yorkie rescue Teek, he is so slow on walks too. It is hard to walk him with the puppies because he is a little old man on walks, but play with him and he will run around like crazy.

I've thought about changing it since I was a kid, believe me! But I never could think of anything better. I want a unique name but not crazy weird. You'd think that Priscilla is unique right? But three other girls in my class in HS had the same name, and one even had the same last name off by one letter! And she was in my math class too! And then the Facebook wife, I have her exact same name! I think it is the age of our parents, who grew up listening to Elvis. Everyone loved Priscilla Presley and thought her name was so original and unique.

I don't really have nicknames other than a shortened version of my name either Scilla or Pris, which only one friend calls me that and she came up with both. I don't have a middle name either bc my parents didn't give me one, just an initial that doesn't stand for anything and, yes it's also a P! WTH. Oh yeah, my parents didn't even come up with the name. My aunt thought of it but she had a boy (he's 3 mo older than me) so my mom used it. She didn't even think of a name for me. :rolleyes:

And we do call Toto many different names. Mostly Turtle but then we shorten it to Turd (LOL) or Turd Man. Then Twinkles/Twankles, and Shrimpy Eyes (bc his eyes are so big and sparkly, he really looks like he has shrimp eyes). He responds to all of them.

We were riding home from our trip to get him and he just looked so cute and furry that I thought about Mickey Mouse so he became Mickey that quickly.

I thought that 'Teddy' would be an original name ...hahaha! My dad thought the same thing about my name when naming me so we were both wrong..must be inherited!

As far as his full name, Sir Rupert Teddykins, it sounded pretentious and made me laugh cuz my boy is anything but show quality pretentious and he's such a clown. So, the irony alone makes me laugh and that's how his name came to be!

I named Razz official name Sir Razzle Dazzle. Mostly because of his personality and I wanted an agility dog. He has lived up to his name!:D

Hubby named our senior boy Magic - when we were on the way to pick him up at 8wks old. We had debated names - and it was on our trip to London that he said Magic. The name rang a bell in my heart and I knew it was just right for him. And he is magic for sure!

I named our youngest lass Dara. I am not quite sure why - but every time I saw her pic I thought what a *darling* she is. Her registered name is something different that means Warrior Princess. And if I had met her in person I might have called her - Bang or Boom. For a fleet lass she can be the literal elephant in the china shop... :D In the early puppy days I might have called her LUNGS. lmao Oh my did she keep me up nights!

Karma our cat RIP beloved I named and it fit him to a T.

Zoey our lass RIP hubby named for reasons that I am not really sure of. But it was his turn to name one of our dogs and there you go.

We always thought of him to be this really old English aristocrat but looks really bad. With probably a monocle too. He walked with a limp so we called him McLimpybottom. I guess the Mc would have made him Irish, but whatever. Montgomery sounds like an old English dude to me too. Then we just kept adding on and on.

I wanted to name Lola Luna after Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter, but my mom and grandmom harassed me so much about it.

I ended up naming her Lola after the Kinks song because I like the way they say Lola, La-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola.
My poodle was Roxanne after the Police song because I liked how they said her name too.

I still love the name Luna, but Lola suits her better.

haha that's cute ... Teddy is actually English..we got him from Gloucestershire so that's where 'Sir' and 'Rupert' came from..

As you can see below (we took this pic about 20 minutes ago), he is certainly no Lord and looks like a rejected Knight hahaha:

I love reading how everyone's pups were named.

I had picked out the name Winston for Winston Churchill, and was going to use the nickname Winnie meaning friend.

Dad looked at the photo of my puppy to be and named him Max, because he looked intense. I approved if it could be short for Maximus for the 'Gladiator' character. That turned into Massimo or Maximo. We combined it with his puppy litter name: Rolls Royce Maximo.

Teddy was originally Tank. We renamed him for Teddy Roosevelt: Theodore Rex, the title of the popular biography. He loves the outdoors and loves life.

I have always thought a lot of yorkies look like little ewoks. We are thinking about naming ours Wicket, after the ewok!

CHEETOS?!! Is that a Cheetos box? My guilty pleasure! I haven't bought any in quite some time. I may have to get some tomorrow.

IDK, Tibbe's name just sort of appeared in my mind's eye once I got him in the car on the way home and he seemed happy to answer to it. Never had heard the name before but it was just there in my mind once I saw him. He's such a Tibbe!

After we lost our Yorkie who was named Barkley (as in Sir Charles) my favorite NBA player, I did not want another Yorkie. I was so devastated I didn't think I could bear to look at the same little face again. My husband insisted on another Yorkie, I wanted a Biewer. We compromised, we got one of each! What to name them? I wanted one named Scotti and the other Pippen after Scotti Pippen (NBA Chicago Bulls). My son, also an NBA person refused to call them by those names. So for weeks we text each other constantly with names that just didn't work. About three weeks after we had them I showed my husband how our little biewer kept stealing our yorkie's toys. I said "he is a real little bandit". Just at that moment my phone binged. I received a text from my son that said "how about Smokey and the Bandit?" And so it goes...they were named. Oh and BTW, my son said if we get a third puppy his name must be Junior!!!!
