| Running the fence Sunday aChihuahua found it’s way to my house, and the fence racing began between Cody and the Chi. I thought it would be good exercise for Cody so I allowed it. One hour later and several hydrangea and butterfly bushes crushed I decided enough was enough. I took Cody in the house, saw his back paw was bleeding. I washed and dried his foot, no bleeding after that, I looked at his foot to see where the bleeding had come from, I saw no tear or cut at the nail or pad or between his toes. Appox an hour or two later I saw he was limping slightly but was still jumping on and off the sofa and bed. I fed him about 3 hours after this running the fence. Cody always vacuums up his food, this day he ate a bit, left his food, but came back later and finished it, first time ever he has done this. Then he went off to sleep. Monday the next morning when we woke up it appeared he was kinda apprehensive about jumping off the bed I picked him up and took him out to potty, He was favoring that back foot, 7AM I fed him, he ate ½ his food, red flag, I put him on the sofa next to me. Every time I get up he always has to follow me, I can get off the sofa 100 times, and 100 times so will he, this morning he did not, another red flag. Every morning he sits by the window waiting for that pesty squirrel, this morning he did not. I knew he had to be in pain, my concern was his running through my bushes that had last year’s bark on them, concerned a piece of bark may have pierced between the toes that caused the bleeding, concerned he did not have an infection starting in that foot, so off to ER we go. The vet checked his pads, saw he had tears on several pads on all four feet, just small splits, none were deep or bleeding, no raw scrapes. They drew blood, said Kidney, liver, and pancreas were fine, no sign of infection and x-ray would not be needed. She physically hand checked his body, when she got to this hip bones he turned to look at her, she said his body was sore from the excessive running / galloping. I agreed the fence running was more than excessive for him, he runs and trots in the yard, but this fence running was over the top, my fault, I thought the exercise would be good for him, who knew. She also said his feet hurt because of the tears, the foot that was bleeding she said was from the nail to pad. No bark, no splinter penetrated his foot.He was given an antibiotic injection, I was sent home with Tramadol pain reliever 50 mg ¼ tab 2x’s a day 8 day supply and Methocarbamol muscle relaxer 500 mg ¼ tab every 8 hours 5 day supply. Meds are to be taken until all are finished. Monday I could only give him one of each of these meds. Tuesday morning he was back to his ole stalk the pesty squirrel from the window self, jumping on and off bed & sofa, following me all over, no limping, no favoring his back foot, he wolfed down his breakfast. It was wonderful to see his lil spunky self. Tuesday I didn’t take him to the yard, I gave him the meds as prescribed, he was just his ole self. Wed. I gave him the AM Tramadol and the Methocarbamol, took him out to the yard, he ran and trotted as he usually does, no limping, no favoring his back foot, jumping on and off things, just back to normal. Wed eve, I gave him the Tramadol but the Methocarbamol the muscle relaxer I gave 11 hours later. Today he is also fine, being his ole lil self. I did not give him the morning meds. So here is my question He is back to normal, I don’t want to continue with the meds as he shows no sign of pain in body or feet. I am concerned with side effects of all meds. Should I continue with the meds until they are finished even tho he is acting normal, or should I discontinue giving them to him since he shows no sign what so ever of being in any discomfort.

| If he is no longer in pain, I see no reason to continue the meds. There is no problem with abruptly discontinuing either of these meds or need to finish as in ABX. But, if you choose to continue them just make sure he doesn't drive or consume alcohol

| I would finish the abx (always recommended) but stop the pain meds. Sometimes when I overdo a muscle it can cause a lot of pain for two or three days. Sounds like this is what happened along with the torn pads.

If ABX is an antibiotic he got a shot of that so none was given to me in pill form. What I want to stop is the pain killer and the muscle relaxer as I see no need for it. With all the yorkies I have had over the last 35 + years this is the first time this has happened to a pup of mine. I just wanted to ensure it was ok to stop these meds when he is 100% his nutty little self. I haven't given him the meds today and he is still ok. I am making sure there is no excessive jump, leaping and yard racing. I called the vet, spoke to a tech I have worked with very close when my Matese was with me, I asked about letting him in the yard since he had these splits on his pads, she said it was ok, if I wanted I could put soap and water in a little tub and bathe his feet just to give ME peace of mind, me being the worry wart that I am lol have taken her advice and bathe his paws, the tears / splits are not open wounds, like in torn or were bleeding. There will NEVER be another fence running again. Thank you for giving me peace of mind in stopping the pain meds.

| Especially with the Tramadol, discontinue if not needed. It is a serious drug and if they are not in pain, it is best not to give it.

I Google and research everything too. LOL I just need to know. When I took Bella to the vet, I told him what the problem was... no, I'm not OCD much when it comes to my furbutt.
