This could be a bad idea ... My friend has been looking to adopt an older Yorkie for a while now. He's looked at those in the shelters and at rescues. Today he brought home a Yorkie from an ad on Craigslist that said "MUST rehome today or she goes to the shelter." He figured he would at least go and see the dog. She is matted, a little skinny, smells horrible and is passing gas like crazy. The girl who put the ad up is 18 and hasn't taken the pup to the vet since she got her but says she is 2 1/2 years old and was healthy when she took her to the vet. The girl says she has had puppies once, when she was 1 year old. However, the dog has the sweetest disposition and such sad eyes that my friend decided to bring her home. By the way, she wasn't free. I saw a picture the girl had of her that was taken when the dog was younger. She had a beautiful coat in the picture. Anyway, he is taking her to the vet in Tuesday for a check-up and shots. Tomorrow he is taking her to the groomers to have her shaved to a summer coat. I really hope that she is overall healthy but it's anyone's guess if she is. It will be one less dog in the shelter and she will have a good home but I'm not sure it was a good idea. |
I think it is a great idea! The dog will be loved and have a good life! A life saved is a good idea. I have taken in many dogs that were no longer wanted and they are the best. I hope your friends gets many years of enjoyment out of her. |
Saving a dog from that existence is NEVER a bad idea. Give your friend a hug from me! |

I will let him know that you both agree.😀 He went to get food (the girl said she was out and didn't buy more because she wasn't keeping her) and treats and lots of other goodies! I know she will have a good life. I only worry about her health but I'm sure he'll take good care of her regardless. |
Im sure she will have a wonderful life with your friend. I was at petsmart today getting a few things for my new pup and they were doing adoptions and there were 2 beautiful little yorkies curled up in crates and seeing them just broke my heart. They both seemed very scared and sad. I let each of my kids pick out toys to donate and the adoption lady put let the kids put them in their crates. Im so hoping that they were given a second chance and adopted today. I wish your friend and his new little girl all the luck. |
the dog is going to be better off for sure, good luck |
Wow thank goodness he got her. That's a sad situation she came from. Hopefully she will be healthy and so much happier in her new home. |

Bless you friend's wonderful heart for taking this poor little one in so that she can finally live the life she deserves! Tell your friend he rocks :)! |
Bless your friend for rescuing this poor little girl, puppies at a year old, OMG. He saved a precious little life. Rescuing is always a crap shoot, ya never know what you're going to get, what we do know is, that this baby will now have an awesome, much loved life with your friend. She will live a life she should have been living, great big hugs to your friend. |
I will definite let him read this thread. He says she had a pretty good night. She paced for a while before she settled down. He also said she ate so fast and crazy that he picked up the bowl after about 5 minutes because he was worried she would make herself sick. I'll let you know how the groomers and the vet goes. I know he will enjoy reading your comments. Thanks😀 |
I'm sure your friend will get ALL the emotional support he might need/want here! Myself as well as many (if not all) members here are thankful he saved the poor pup. |

Poor little mite , she seems to have landed on her feet, she will have a great new life. |
Your friend made the right decision and I hope all goes well for both! A little patience and understanding, along with good nutrition, and lots of love with ensure his little girl becomes the happy, secure girl she is meant to be...Tell your friend not to be shy about asking any and all questions--nothing is too trivial or too 'dumb.' Yorkie Forum is nothing if not totally supportive of one another! Please give your friend a thank you hug! |

P.s. I'm being polite to call her a "dipstick" as I can think of a lot of other names. |
Well, she is finished at the groomers. She had 10 ticks down in her ears! I'm really upset that this girl cared so little for this dog. I keep forgetting to let you know he decided to name her Princess, she didn't respond to her other name anyway so he figured she should have a fresh start with a new name. I'm hoping he joins the forum. He lurks but says he isn't much into posting...lol. He did want me to ask how they test for Lyme disease since she had so many ticks, he's kind of worried. Her vet appt. is tomorrow. Any suggestions on questions he should ask? |
Just have him let the vet know about the ticks and let the vet decide what they would do. I can't imagine 10 ticks! Teek had 1 tick on him and I freaked. I carried him upstairs to work at removing it and when I arrived with him in the bathroom the tick was gone. 10 ticks would freak me out like crazy! We don't have ticks at my house so I rarely have to deal with it. It is when we go places that they might be exposed to them. |

I'm surprised this poor baby wasn't in terrible pain with all of those ticks in her ears. :( Hopefully it is a good sign that she doesn't show any outward signs of illness. |
As others have written, let the vet know of the 10 ticks IN the ears, the vet will know what tests to do. All he has to do is tell the vet how he got her, the vet will do what tests he thinks is necessary and give vaccines as I am sure this girl didn't give her any. The more I read the more I want to smack that girl. That's a perfect name for her, from this day forward that's how she will be treated, like a little princes. Is your friend going to have her spayed. I hope he is considering it. And don't forget to remind him to have her micro-chipped if she isn't already. A bath, nasty bugs removed, haircut, and a new name, starting her new life as a princes. Is there a way you can pictures of her to post. |
I'll ask him to take pics for me. He is definitely going to have her spayed as soon as the vet says she is healthy enough. She is skinnier than I thought she was now that she's had a haircut. He'll get her microchipped at the same time. She has scabs on her elbows, I'm not sure what that's from. He says she is acting much perkier since she's been back from the groomer. She is probably much more comfortable without the ticks and the matts. |
Scabs on elbows, if hair is matted for a long period of time, air cannot get to skin, this can cause sores, maybe that's what happened, I'm surprised this baby was not infested with fleas. Happy to know she will be spayed, this is a health factor. If shes very thin then she was not feed regularly, probably fed when the idiot remembered, that's probably why she wolfed down her food. She must feel wonderful if she's perkier, your friend will see a new yorkie emerge soon. Pictures would be awesome. |
how wonderful that she is already showing signs of feeling better. I have a feeling your friend made a decision out of love and care. Princess is the perfect name for this little Cinderella story! |
What a heartwarming story! |
Any up dates on little princess. |

Please update asap how she is progressing. I'm sure she feels like she's won the lottery with this wonderful new owner. |
This is so heartwarming. God Bless your friend. Give him a hug from me too. I hope he, or you, will keep updating so we know how little Princess is doing. All I can say is thank God he saved her. |
It is amazing to me that anyone could care so little for an animal who depends on you for everything and is so loyal and loving. Princess is a lucky little girl! |
Sorry I didn't post sooner...things have been hectic. I called him today and he said she has infection in her ears, worms and is anemic. She is on antibiotics, had de wormer and has vitamins drops for the anemia. Shots are being delayed until she is feeling better and definitely no spay while she is anemic. Vet thinks she had more than one litter of puppies. However, my friend says that she is acting much spunkier and that she loves to eat. She will be a much happier little girl. |
