I take mine to petsmart/petco...but we always hold them!!

I take Logan to petsmart when I can and he would throw an absolute fit if I didn't let him walk. Logan is the friendliest dog ever and he wants to make sure everyone sees him. You wouldn't believe how many people he's scared by sneaking up on them and little their ankles or something. He also loves to see other dogs. the one time I was there he was bond and determined he was gonna play with these 2 huge great dane puppies. I bet they each weighed 60 lbs at 5 months. Their head was bigger than Logan's whole body. Logan went up and they sniffed and licked and then Logan jumped on the big ones head. Ever so gently it rolled him with his paw and Logan thought that was so fun, but I could see the owner was worried they would hurt him and was tired trying to hold this too giant dogs back so I picked up Logan and walked away. All dogs involved were totally bummed. I think if the dogs are on leashes and being payed attention too the owner should be well aware that the dogs aren't just playing before it gets out of hand. Dogs don't just act all friendly then all the sudden chomp down on another dogs head. It's usually very clear if a dog is going to agressive towards another and if you see a dog acting agressive you should pick up your dog and get the heck out of there.

First - it's nice that there are places where dogs can visit - mine have gone to these stores several times and think they have died and gone to heaven. They love going there.

My larger dog knows when we turn the corner near PetCo and is already excited about getting out and going in. I love taking her there, but still keep my eyes open. My little Yorkie is in my arms the whole time we visit PetCo, and loves going there also.

I enter the store tentatively (with my dogs in a cart or in my arms) and check the store out before I let them down. (I still carry my Yorkie.) If all seems well - we are off and running and having a great time. But, I do keep my eyes open. And - I do let my Yorkie down occasionally to visit with another little dog.

I think the policy is that dogs are to be leashed or held in these stores. This alone, should prevent most problems.

I wouldn't expect these stores to say only certain size dogs or certain breeds are welcome. Any size or breed can be well behaved and/or constrained.

Those of us who have small little dogs have already learned that our dogs need special protection and care wherever we go. So - going to PetSmart or PetCo is no different, and in fact, we know there are often other dogs there and should be even more careful. It is much more our responsibility, than it is the store's open-door policy, to protect our dogs.

****** A couple of years ago, I saw two people in Petco with a dog that wanted to growl and bark at the other dogs in the store. An employee ask one of the people to stand outside with the dog while the other shopped. They weren't offended and agreed that their dog was not being nice and were happy to comply.

Next time I'm there - I'm going to ask them about what sorts of problems they have with dogs visiting - and what their policies are. I know if I worked there, "bad dogs" would be asked to leave. And "good dogs" could stay. And ---most dogs are good!

Well said Carol. . . .and I totally agree 100%. It is the responsibility of the petowner to watch after their own dogs. My Tiger loves Petsmart as that is where he gets his puppy training. We live in an area that is NOT over-populated so there aren't too many dogs wandering through the store. And if there are dogs, they MUST BE on a leash! I use my discretion when it comes to letting Tiger roam around freely (with a leash of course) . . .he actually gets most of his exercises there as we both run around the store . . . but I am like a hawk, always making sure of his safety . . . whenever he wants to approach a dog (of any size) I always talk to the owner first and check on their dogs personality and disposition when it comes to dealing with smaller dogs such as yorkies. . . . it is unfair to blame PETSMART for this unfortunate incident!

Lately at my location, we've begun cleaning(mopping, brushing and waxing) the floors daily. Our old cleaning crew didn't show one day they were supposed to and I think they replaced them. Don't know for sure though.

So I do not consider that dirty. Locations Vary though.
