Puppy Tips?

I'm going to be getting a Yorkie puppy in about two months, and I'm new to this site. (Pardon my mistakes, I'm a newbie to things like this! Please be patient!)

I need tips on properly leash training a Yorkie pup, I've never done it before, and bathing them properly. (They have sensitive skin, right? I've heard they do.) I've owned a Yorkie before, but that was two years ago and I wasn't the most responsible owner. (I was still living under my parents' limitations as to what I could and couldn't do for my dog.) Now, though, my dog of fifteen years is in horrible condition and dying, so I had a breeder friend of mine put me on the waiting list for the litter that is coming at the end of April. Is $600 a reasonable price for a male Yorkie pup? (The breeder's dogs are all AKC registered and the pup comes with puppy forums and papers.) The last time I got one from a breeder, he was only $250, and he was the last of the litter.

I currently have three dogs: fifteen year old Lab/Shepherd mix, seven year old Shih-Tzu, and a two year old Terrier/Italian Greyhound mix. I was going to use the leash trained Shih-Tzu for training the pup, but will that work or will it be harder? I'm willing to do all I can, of course, but I don't have a lot of patience. (I am a bit impatient sometimes, but others I can deal with it well!)

Hi and welcome to YT . Yes, $600 is actually really inexpensive for a yorkie pup.

As far as shampoo, not all yorkies have sensitive skin...so I'd just start out with a standard dog shampoo, non-oatmeal based. Yorkie Splash and Shine is supposed to be really nice.

For walking, I just took it slow...ie got my pups used to their collars, then used to the leash, then tried walking for a while...if they didn't want to walk, I'd carry them. Eventually, it just seemed to click with them.

Btw, what happened to your 1st yorkie?

Welcome to YT, for $600. I would be buying two lol. In 1997 when I purchased my last puppy I paid $700. and she was way over the standard size, as an adult she weighed in at 17 lbs lol. Puppies from good breeding stock sell starting at $1500 up to $2500. With yorkie breed patience is an absolute must. Do not use collars for leash walking, use harness, puppies will pull, or you may have to give them a tug or two to get them to walk, you don't want to put pressure on their throats. When I had puppies I had older yorkie also, everyone went for walks at the same time. Depends on the puppy, will it learn from the other dog? Give it a couple weeks trial, if puppy is distracted by your other dog, like it wants to play with it, then take puppy out by it's self, where they can concentrate on what they have to do. When I trained my puppies on house breaking I would give them the command word, pee-pee then poo-poo, they all knew what that meant. Walk and keep repeating what you want them to do. But, you must be patient, cannot be harsh or demanding. I am sure others will be along to offer, advise, suggestions and their own experiences.

Please don't put a collar on a Yorkie- only a harness. They have delicate tracheas and are prone to injury there.

I would be careful with bigger dogs in the home also, they can unintentionally harm them will playing.

That price seems VERY low for a Yorkie! In Missouri I have paid a great deal more mine.

As far as shampooing - I agree with the others that Yorkie Splash and Shine is very good. I do have 2 that have itchies and they only get bathed in the purple no more tears Johnson baby Shampoo (per the Vet) and they do fine.

I think it really depends on what area you live on how much a "good" yorkie goes for. I've lived in NY where they cost $2000(+), Tennessee $500(+), Mississippi 300(+), Texas $400 (+), and the West Indies $300(+). It really comes down to the breeder and what they feel they should price their puppies. My breeder charged me not what I consider much for my first yorkie, when I contacted her about purchasing another she charged me less than what she charged others due to our great standing relationship. Since you already have a small breed I don't have to tell you to keep an eye on your puppy with the medium/larger breed dogs. My yorkies don't have sensitive skin, but they are sensitive to cold weather. Either way investing in a good shampoo that works for them is a must. If you're impatient you may want to work on that lol. Yorkies are a bit hard to (potty)train in general and will usually do their best to train YOU to their way of doing things. Oh, I also want to add to only use a collar for tags and use a harness for walking.

I knew it was inexpensive, and I'm very glad that the breeder didn't ask more for him, otherwise it would've been impossible for me to purchase him.

My last Yorkie had dry skin, and I had to change his shampoo against my parents' wishes. Thank you for the information!

With walking, I was going to use a small harness due to the apparent collapsed trachea I've heard about. Once again, thank you!

My other Yorkie, Cooper, passed away a little over two years ago. He was hit by a car, and the cause of death was unknown. It could have been internal damage, it could have been shock. We're not sure.

That's what I was going to do. I was going to order a Lupine harness before I got him.

By the time I get the little guy, my larger dog will be over the rainbow bridge, and my other two aren't much bigger than a Yorkie. I'll keep an eye on them, of course, but I'm sure everything will be fine. As for shampoo, I'll check out the Yorkie Splash and Shine!
