Reminds me of Mars Attacks! SJP's head on her chihuahua. Not that SJP looks like a pit bull. Her head is more like a face like a horse.

Bonus points if anyone can tell me which movie that last part was from!

My friend has a german shepard/corgi, he looks kinda like this http://www.dogbreedplus.com/dog_bree...n_shepherd.jpg

He's very cute and sweet, but he has tons of hip and leg problems, he's had multiple surgeries, he can't jump, and he can't run much. He's about 7 now and has had these restrictions for most of his life.

I like mutts, but I wouldn't buy or adopt one with radically different breeds mixed together, it's asking for trouble IMO.

Yorkies and other small breed dogs are CHICK MAGNETS! You say you are single huh? Get a yorkie and take your daughter and the dog with you everywhere. Women will be lining up to talk to you.
Seriously true. My cousin has me send him pics of Lola to show girls, he loves her and the westies he grew up with. He's 27, tall, muscular, not at all feminine or "gay". My other cousin's gay bff likes Lola the least out of everyone in our family/close friends, he's a cat person.

The men that gush the most over Lola are typically very tough looking, tattoos, bikerish types, or they're older and have had a little dog.

Just please be aware that this dog is going to be more your responsibility than your daughter's. You're going to have to help her train it and look after it when she goes to college.
I've had 2 dogs, I got one at age 7 and the other at 23, it's been a completely different experience. My family did most of the work and bills for my first dog.

Poor guy. That's so sad. Unfortunately there are many purebreeds that are also predisposed of a short and painful life.

I have a neighbor 2 house down, they had 3 yorkies, husband rides a Harley and is a tractor trailer truck driver. This guy is built like a bull, looks rough and mean, he was on my driveway this winter crying over one of their yorkie that had just passed away. He takes one of the yorkies to work with him everyday. They just adopted a 4 month old female, he bought her to my house to show me his new baby, the smile on his face you would have thought his wife just gave birth and he was showing off his new born infant. I have several male friends that have yorky or westie, they are straighter then a nail, their dogs go everywhere with them. Nothing gay or shameful about men with small dogs, it's all in the mind of the man.

I wanted to put in my 2 cents about getting a dog for a 9 year old as well. I've had a total of 3 dogs in my life, one when I was 12 (I suckered my dad into it, as ALL little girls do), one when I was in college and had my own place with a backyard (I waited until I could fully accommodate a puppy), and I just got one recently. I ended up needing to give my first dog away because yes, I told my parents I would feed her, take care of her, walk her, play with her but really? I didn't. I probably did for like the first few months. After a year my parents no longer felt we were fit to care for her and had to give her away. So yes, you will need to understand that YOU will be the one taking care of this dog. YOU will be the one potty training, walking, feeding, taking the dog to the vet. If you are getting the dog for you guys as a family, then it's great but do not get a dog solely for a 9 year old girl.

It just sounds like a lie. And if not a lie, it sounds cruel. A dog that small with a large dog. Did the mother survive the birth?

He is a great guy. Back around 2003 or2004 I had just come back from a week end visiting my dad. I had 2 yorkies at that time, I put the dogs in the house and went to unload my car. When I came in the house I couldn't find my youngest one Matese, she was big girl, 17 Lbs
. I looked all over for her couldn't find her. She was a fast lil girl, could dart out of the door without you ever seeing her, so out side I go, calling, calling, calling her, nothing, now I am frantic and crying, I live in a very heavily wooded area. I am walking down the road crying and calling her name, anyone I see outside I ask if they saw a large yorkie, all answers are no, I say she is friendly if you see her call me, I give my house address and cell # and continue calling and walking. A car was coming down the road, I flag it down, I am crying and frantic, barely able to talk I ask the driver did they see a yorkie, I tell them my dog must have scooted out of the house while I was coming in. The driver, a man, says to me, I am driving my wife to the bus depot, we have yorkies to, I will help you look if you will drive me back to the bus depot to get my car,I tell yes, he tells his wife here, take the car, I have to help her. He goes one way and I continue on the same road, for over an hour we are calling and looking. We meet back where we first met, I am devastated, my baby is gone,I can only pray she can find her way home, I tell the man walk with me to my house, I will drive you to pick up your car, we are walking towards my house still calling her name, we get to the driveway and who is looking out of the window, yep Matese lol, she heard me calling her name lol, God only knows how long she was at that window looking for me, wondering why dumb A!! momma was calling her.I was so happy to see her all I could do was cry and hug her tight. This guy was as happy as I was, I took my girls with me and drove him to the bus depot, I was telling him how i had searched my house for her, it's not a big house, not many places to hide. When I bot back home I started to search around again, where could she have been, she's not a hider lol. I am checking all lover, from the corner of my eye I see her black butt disappear behind the sofa. My sofa has recliners at each end. I go to where she disappeared and call her, out she comes, the sofa is very heavy because of the recliners, I drag it away from the wall and saw there was a nice size space between the two recliners, I also discovered it was her stash hide out, I found all my chap sticks, lighters, socks, her fav. toys all hidden in that space lol. The next day I had a gate put on the front porch,no more worrying about her escaping from the house. I walk down to this guys house the next day to tell him where she was hiding. This man has so much love for these lil critters, looking at him you would never know what a softie he is. Matese had to be put down Oct.1 2013 at age 17 y/o, the middle of Oct I was fumbling around out side,my eyes were swollen from days of crying for my little girl, I was at the end of my driveway, he was passing by with his car, stopped to say hello, saw my eyes were swollen,he gets out, asks if I'm ok, I start to cry, tell him what happened, he hugs me and is crying to. That' how much he loves these little dogs. He has no problems with his Masculinity.

Now that's a man's man!!!! Sounds like an exceptional guy. His Yorkie likely has just about a perfect life with him.

My hubby loves Razzle as much as I do! He calls him QTip! lol He also spoils him rotten. And hubby and I are large dog folks. But that is what a Yorkie is a large dog in a small package.

he has no issue with walking Razzle even when Razzle was all wrapped up when he was showing. This was our first toy dog and likely to be our last unless we do some short term fostering. Only because we hope that Razzman will live a long and healthy 17yrs or so.

To the OP: I would look at getting a medium sized dog, and as someone mentioned you will likely have the lions share of caring for the dog long term. Portugese Water Dogs are good with kids quite active and often make a good family pet.

If you want to stay small - a Havanese is also quite sturdy and very good with children.

If you have a concern or an issue with barking - like you live in a rental apartment know that most terriers are barkey and you will need to address that very early on.

And I will say Yorkies definitely are chick magnets :-) but if you think you would feel weird walking a small dog - make another choice size wise.

As a first time dog owner I would recommend you stay away from the Working Breeds as most are not suitable for an in-experienced owner. And that includes mixes of the working breeds. The exception Portugese Water Dog and possibly Boxer and or Standard Schnauzer.

There are more than a few sites that can help you select the correct breed for your family. You can go to www.akc.org or www.ckc.ca both provide a short questionnaire designed to help you select a breed for you.

A note on mixed breeds - most especially when the mix is of different sized dogs. First you will not know how large this particular mix will grow to be. You have to be carefull about the temperament and understand what is the temperament of each of the purebreds that were bred together. Then imagine the most difficult of the temperament in each breed manifesting itself in one puppy - could you deal with that? You will not know what type of coat you will end up with especially if the two breeds have different basic coats. And health concerns can be doubled up or conversely you could get a very healthy dog - there is just no way to know in advance.

Temperament and Health are extremely important - these are the two most frequent reasons why dogs are surrendered to pounds.

For example the Rottweiler : Dominant, Assertive, Stubborn - Needs to be trained and well socialized early and lots. Their purpose was to guard their burgher masters as they walked home from work. They also make good draft dogs .... And of course very very loyal and loving to their family.

Yorkshire Terrier ; Alert Sprightly Territorial Active Inquisitive and Determined. Can be *barkey* Thinks that they are a Big Dog.

Now imagine the combination........

The next thing I caution is that mixed breed breeders will often not do a PAT assessment of the pups - and understand what type of dog this one may go up to be and match the pups needs to an owner capable of handling those needs.

Some words to look out for when reading what a breeds temperament is:

Assertive - not the same as dominant but a dog that has courage and the willingness to use it.

Dominant - These dogs like to be and were even bred to be leaders of the pack and will boss you around if you do not know enough to handle a dominant breed.

Highly Strung Similar to excitable but different - more a nervous temperament - They usually do well with lots of exercise, and a predictable routine.

Excitable - they love to bark - they are engaged in the world around them and respond quickly to stimuli.

If a breed is described as not for the first time dog owner - trust that description and look elsewhere - including any mix of that breed.

I hope this helps you and that you find the perfect pet for your family
