| Shampoo with tea tree oil Our groomer recommended a shampoo with tree tea oil to treat our Yorkie's dry skin. She usually uses a shampoo with oatmeal. Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks, Pam |

| It is toxic for dogs if used in full concentration. Even for humans, you need to be careful, but effectiveness must outweigh risks. Almost twenty years ago, I used a Melaleuca shampoo for dogs. I had no problems with it. Since then I used Jerob Cocoa Butter and Mink Oil shampoo, which was great for dry skin, but now I use Isle of Dogs shampoo #10. If I was treating for therapeutic skin issues, I'd probably use #12. It's expensive, but I buy the liter size, which lasts a very long time. You can also try using a small amount of extra virgin coconut oil on the hair or a little bit by mouth. Tea Tree Oil: Great for Your Cuts But Use with Caution on Pets

| Tea tree oil used in shampoo is a bit different than tea tree oil used in a 'leave in application' manner. As a leave in, I would still be cautious in areas dogs can lick and use sparingly only if needed, but toxic for use on felines, as I understand it...reason being felines lick their fur giving opportunity to build up over time to toxic levels. Canines are not typically 'lickers' like felines. Coconut oil is very good for skin, and you can add it to whatever shampoo you choose...make a solution starting with warm water, add a little coconut oil...depending on the amount of solution you are making, say 8 oz total, in a squirt bottle, you may want 6 oz water, 1/4 to 1/2 tsp coconut oil, and maybe 2 oz shampoo. Shake/mix...the oil will be bound by the shampoo...then use. Shampoo is kind of a 'what works for you that you like best' as far as I can tell. I have read oatmeal is great, and I have read oatmeal is bad, for dry skin. So I couldn't say which is correct...LOL. I used for many years on large breed dogs a crystal clear, chemically clean veterinary formulated shampoo...which is no longer available. You may need to try a few to find the best one for you, so you may want to start with smaller size bottles at first. You can also feed organic virgin coconut oil to help skin, hair, etc. Mine love it. I hope you find a good solution.
