How Long Can You Dog Hold It In I have a 10 month old and I was told he should only be able to hold it in for 6 hours. I thought it was 1 hour per age. How long can your dog hold it it? I am curious because I think I might not be letting my dog out enough. Thanks |
My past yorkies at 7 months old were 100% house broken. I was working, gone 9 hours, they held pee & poo. They were walked at 7:30AM, again when I got home at 4:30PM, but the were over 5 lbs. As adults their weights were 10, 13 and 17 lbs. At 7 months old I don't remember what their weights were, but they were not tiny pups. |
my dog is 10 months old but sometimes when i come down stairs in the morning he peed in his bed. I let him out at 10 and get up at 7 so I think 9 hours is too long for him. He is 10 pounds. |

Not sure about during the day, but at night Lexi is taken out for her last potty break at about 8:30 and she is fine until I get her up at about 6/6:30. She is only 5 lbs, but she has always been a good sleeper. She started sleeping through the night at 13/14 weeks old. |
wow that is awsome. He goes out at 10 and I get up at 7 and sometimes he has peed on the couch and sometimes he has not. He does have a pad down in the kitchen and he does go on it sometimes. Sammie is 10 pounds so I would think he could hold it longer than he does but maybe his bladder is not that strong |
Every dog is different. I don't think it's really weight so much. I've seen some little ones hold it pretty long. Jackson can hold it for 10-12 hours overnight. During the day I generally don't push it past 6 hours. |
For me, it's not about how long they can hold it, it's about how long they should have to hold it. If sleeping, ZoE will usually go all night and not potty until morning. But that doesn't mean I expect her to do that during the day. I've only ever had a yorkie, and has always pad trained, so they've had the option to potty whenever they needed. I personally think every dog should have potty options while owners are gone, whether by pads or doggie doors. IMO its cruel to do otherwise. To expect your dog to hold it, regardless of stomach upset, or how they are feeling day to day, what they drink, etc., just seems wrong. How many owners never utilize a bathroom between leaving home and returning home? |

My pup is 4 months and can hold it for 5 hours in his crate when I'm at work. Now when he's up and about I take him out every hour. I have no idea how to test how long he can go without extending the time between when I take him out. I can't wait until he's housebroken. I'm exhausted from taking him out every single hour lol. Maybe he'll be good in 2 months? I sure hope so. |
I do agree it is different with each dog, but for puppies the guidelines we have our sound. Very young puppies - after eating, after waking, after playing, and then one hour per one month of life. That is why pups are so exhausting :-) Adult dogs are different - but I don't like to make a habit of other than for overnight sleeping to let the doggies go beyond 5 hours - Get some-one to come in mid-day and give a walk about and a pee/ poo break if you are out all day working. Sure many can hold it much longer, but I don't think they should always have to. Also as dogs become senior their potty habits might change. Magic now often-times needs to go out at 2 or 3 am for pottying. He lets me know, by gently waking me with his nose. |

I do have Toto in a crate with a pad while I'm out of the house bc he's not 100% trained. He doesn't give a crap and will go where ever the hell he wants if I don't take him outside. LOL And if I'm gone for a long time, I leave one of the shower doors open and Uni will go in the shower or tub if she needs to go. |
I have a Yorkie and a Havanese. They are both trained to use the wee wee pad and to got when I walk them. The weewee pad is in the bathroom. They go whenever they have to go. |
Marcie is 8 yrs old and 7 lbs. I don't think she can hold it more than 6 hrs. During the night I let her out once. She might have a different time schedule than others. |

Remy sleeps in his kennel at night and can hold his urine for 10+ hrs and he is 2.5 lbs. Eventhough, I have a pee pad in it he will not use it. That's the not going potty where they sleep thing eventhough it's away from his bed. He did pee on it when he was younger but now he won't. He sure does let us know in the morning that he has to go lol. |
My Yorkies seem to need to go every three or four hours or so on average. They can usually hold it all night, though, when applicable. |
I also agree that every dog is different. Night time holding is different than daytime too so just because they hold it for ten or 6-10 hours at night does not mean they should hold it that long during the day. Activity level, water intake, and sleep during the day can trigger a need to go. They form habits just like we do and many times their habits are derived from our routines. I don't like to ask mine to go longer than 4-5 hours, but that's me and my schedule allows for 4 hour breaks. On longer days or unexpected circumstances we have potty pads. |
So guess it does not go by weight. It must go by how strong their bladder is. The longest I have left him alone is 6 hours during the day and he holds it. But at night it was 9 hours. So I am thinking 9 hours is too long for him. So now I get up at 4 and let him out and so far so good. |

That would not work becasue he does not tell me when he has to go the bathroom so even if he slept with me he would probably either pee in my bed or jump down and go on my rug. |

every dog is different, Lola can hold it for 7 hours with no problem if she has to. she sleeps through the night and has since she was four months old. Had other yorkies that could not make it through the night or go much more than 4 hours, to me size is not a factor it's the dog and their water consumtion |

Very confused I've read this thread a couple of times as I have the same question..... Lucy is my puppy. She is ten months old. Right now my Lucy stays in her crate at night Almost 9 hours. I don't let her go longer than that. She wakes me in the morning and will go the bathroom when I take her out. imgot her she she was 5 months. I just have done a schedule that I followed which was 2 to 3 hours. I was pleased with how well she did as I kept on the schedule assuming that as she got older she would be able to hold it and extend the time I took her out to 4 or 5 hours and she could hold it more. It's 5 month later. If I am at all late on the schedule she will pee on the floor. Occasionally she will poop but mostly pees. I have her mostly in the kitchen during the day when I can't watch her. I have someone take her out during the day but again off the schedule at all and she will pee. I occasionally crate her for 4 hours at most. The restricted area It keeps her from getting into trouble. I do let her out after I take her out and also extend her area in the house so she doesn't think her whole house it hers to potty in. I have tried to have her out and about but she has always gone the bathroom way before it's time to take her out. I'm kinda frustrated and am not sure if I am doing something wrong. My dad seems to think she is too little of a dog to go outside and I should potty pad train her. She hates the pads and will rip them to shreds when I put them down. And she eats her poop constantly if left and I feed her pinapple to stop her but it doesn't matter. I don't want to confuse her but a friend had Pointed out that she doesn't get the outside thing either so how would that confuse her? I thought this would be easier.... What am I doing wrong?? |
Rights now I amy on a 2 or 3 hour at most schedule... It's really hard and not progressing to extend hours. I guess I just figured extend the hours and her space and it would be easy. Not so much😔 |
So do you watch your puppy like a hawk when it's out and about? I've been taking my pup out very single hour for the past two weeks. When I'm not watching him, he's in the crate. The most I'm gone is 4 hours during the day, including work days. Yesterday I decided to push his time and took him out after 90 mins and he made it. Then today I decided to try 2 hours and he made it that long too. Today I was in the kitchen cleaning I saw him sneak behind the trash can and get in his poop position. I said no! And scooped him up and took him out side (unfortunately he has diarrhea :( and must've really had to go) The point is, I always have my eyes on him when he is outside the crate. I was putting him in the kitchen in a pen, but he also started tearing up the pads, then I tried washable and he would pee in a different part of the kitchen. so I had to resort to crate training. Maybe try washable pads if you decide to pee pad train the pup. Either way, you'll have to watch your puppy and correct it and take it to the right spot with whatever method you choose. |
No I don't watch her like a hawk when she is in her kitchen area. I couldn't do that with my schedule and I don't think I can leave her in the crate while I am at work. It too long and I think kinda cruel after she's been in all night. Is it confusing to do the pads if I've taken her out now? |
