| Yorkie or cairn terrier? Maggie had her fist professional grooming today and though I had to hold her the whole time she was so brave, and we made it to the end of the session complete with a bow. Whew! Anyways, the groomer thought she looked like she might have some cairn terrier in her, I had thought she was all Yorkie (not that it matters to me, she is a rescue, I didnt pay for a purebred, and I love her no matter what). But I am curious what some of you think...her little sweater covers the solid black fur on her back...but all her black fur is coarse and a bit wavy, and the golden fur is silky, soft, fine, and fluffy...except for her face, thats pretty corse too. Thoughts?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I had a Cairn Terrier and as you probably know that's the little dog in the Wizard of Oz. While both are terriers and have upright ears, the yorkie, has much different hair. From my understanding, all cairns have wirey hair, with an undercoat, it feels nothing like a Yorkies coat, it's a very hard coat and not very pleasing to pet. Your baby looks all Yorkie to me, I really don't see any Cairn in her. Most groomers don't study the breeds though, they just get familiar with them through their clients.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | When you say "coarse, do you mean thick or do you mean wiry? When you say, her hair is soft, I'm thinking it can't be very coarse, if it feels soft, although it could be thick.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Oh absolutely, her coloring and even the way she sits there, it's screams, I'm a Yorkie! I'm kind of amazed she's never bit the groomer, but lots of people get Cairns and Yorkies confused, they say it's because in the original Wizard of Oz books while he didn't mention the breed, people thought it was a Yorkie because they were popular at the time, but in the movie they used a Cairn.
