holistically raised puppies? So in my search for a second puppy I've come across puppies that are holistically raised. Most of the breeders offer a 5 or 10 health guarantee (which I think is great). I guess my question is does anyone have holistically raised puppies, did you decide to go organic after you got your pup? Any health issues do far? And any tips on going organic thanks in advance. I'm totally against this idea, a breeder here did that because it gave her an excuse for not paying the vet to do certain things like giving vaccines. I use the term breeder lightly in this case as she was just breeding her pet, not a dog she choose for the specific purpose of breeding. Holistic has become a buzz word and has little or no meaning in many cases. It depends how someone uses it, but I'm very wary of breeders who use marketing terms to sell their dogs. I'm also against any breeder who doesn't understand the importance of vaccines. What does that 5-10 year guarantee protect against? |
We go to a vet that practices holistic alternatives and traditional medicine. The rabies shot was mercury free, limited vaccines, homecooked food and low risk parasite control. I don't homecook but I follow the rest. |

I think it is great that they are raising their pups "holistically" if indeed they are really doing that. I would hope that they are also offering a solid health guarantee. I have to admit I did not know much about holistic feeding until after I got Gracie. She refused every kibble I ever offered her. After much research I went with a commercial raw food that she has loved ever since. My vet is very much for raw feeding. I guess you would call her holistic. She does look at the whole dog and does believe that more natural feeding is best for the pet. We have never had a health issue with Gracie and she is now 4 years old. There are some here on YT that would disagree with the "holistic" idea but there are also many who have gone to natural feeding instead of the highly processed foods that most of the pet food industry offers. |
There are a few breeders who 'naturally rear' their pups, is a better term than holistic. No vaccines, raw food, etc. I've never heard of any problems and these are responsible breeders in every other sense. However, it's not for me. I am a 'limited vaccine' believer but I truly believe in those initial puppy vaccines. I booster one more time at 1 yr old, and then I plan on getting no other shots besides rabies for the dogs life, but even I think getting puppy vaccines is VERY important. Why risk these diseases like parvo if you don't have to? I don't know, just not for me. |
I'm not exactly sure what that means but if it means no shots that is absolutely not smart because any pup can die of parvo and add the fact we are talking about a tiny puppy it's even riskier. It's not smart and I would move on to the next. Holistic stuff is great for some but when we are talking puppy shots and one year boosters it's not ok. A good breeder in my opinion would not, not get there pups there puppy shots. |
I also use a holistic vet. He definitely believes in vaccinations but he does not over vaccinate and he recommends titer testing before doing annual vaccinations. As for diet, he sells raw dog food and Canidae for those that don't wish to feed raw. Just my personal opinion, if I was looking for a puppy I would prefer one that was under vaccinated versus one that was over vaccinated. |

Now someone on here that believed in holistic practices believed and recommended to someone on here to cure mange with peroxide rather than medications which is lunacy. I would research and dont just jump into it I believe some holistic vets may be okay and see vaccinations and medications are needed but I know from being on here and reading threads that some are fanatical too so dont get caught up in that |
Most puppies are not over vaccinated, in fact that would be a little difficult to do since they really need that series of shots the first year. It's older dogs that often are over vaccinated and this usually occurs over a long period of time. Also, the ramifications aren't as noticeable or deadly as under vacination. There have been certain conditions linked with over vaccination, but diseases like Parvo are deadly and painful. So while it sounds good to say, I'd rather have less than too much, in all probability, it's much more harmful to your pet. It's like saying I'd rather be 100 pounds underweight, than 100 pounds overweight. No you wouldn't, while both conditions are bad, one will kill you much faster than the other.
