Yorkie Taken By Coyote - Residenial neighborhood - not near wilderness

That is so terrible. We all need this reminder. I once had several hawks that would wait for me to let me dog out. As soon as they 'heard' my back door they were in the back yard in minutes…I finally had to take him to another neighborhood to walk him for a good long time. A block wall just doesn't cut it. So very scary. I am very very sorry for this terrible loss.

Thank you all for your kind words and understanding. I feel so much better now than a week ago, but it is still hard. My girlfriend is still really taking it hard and has been crying a lot. I will post some pictures soon in her memory

My other little yorkie-mix is doing great considering the loss of his friend. I'm going to be extra careful with him and make sure all around me know to be careful with their dogs... There's a lot of theft, controllable accidents and wild animals to be aware of

One of the reason Cody potty's on the deck from dusk until mid mornings. Some time ago a member posted a video of how quickly a coyote snatched a dog or cat and sleekly jumped a wall with it. Joan...I know exactly where you live. I used to live in Stroudsburg, Pa for 10 years then we moved to the Easton/ Bethlehem area for 1 1/2 years. We then moved to FL in 2005 to move back to Easton, Pa in 2011 to then move back to FL in 2014. All due to hubby' s job. I remember in 2004 after we moved into our new house, it was about 11am I had let my 2 mini dachshunds outside to go potty. They did their business and I brought them back in. I went back into my morning room to finish painting it and looked out the window and was shocked at what I saw. Their was a coyote in my backyard just staring up at the window looking at me. My heart was pounding so hard because all I could think about was I just had the 2 boys out. I made sure I told all of our neighbors to beware. It was bad enough you had to worry about the bears and foxes but to add the coyotes was crazy. I am so glad I trained Remy on the pee pads but I still have to worry when I walk him. I hope you have a better winter this year then the past winter. It was brutal and I am so glad I am back in FL. Best of luck!

Let this be a warning to others that if you are in an area with Coyotes- or closeby even in suburban areas where you wouldn't expect, that Coyotes can get into back yards and take your dog.

My girlfriends parents were watcing her Yorkie and let her out to pee in the middle of the night for a couple minues.

She's in an dense developed neighborhood miles from the wilderness. Her house has 6 ft tall cinder block walls . No one had an idea that this was possible in that neighborhood because it's far from nature. Anyways the Coyotes can travel down sewer drains and come out and take your dog.

They can travel down connected neighboring fences/walls. So even if your wall/fence is higher than 6 feet it might not deter the coyotes.

Right now there is a drought in California and the Coyotes don't have as much natural prey so they are very aggressively scouring our neighborhoods for pets- cats, dogs etc.

Be careful with your pet between 6 pm until 8 am. Some Coyotes have even been seen during the day closer to the wilderness.

Animal Advocates - Coyote information, Los Angeles, California - Mary Cummins this one says to have 8 ft tall fences are necessary. You need to put up barbed wire or a coyote wall roll in order to realy prevent them from climbing a wall.
