Are Yorkies prone to warts?

I have not seen one thread addressing warts. My last two had them, it was an issue for my older girl because she sported a puppy cut. My other girl’s coat was kept mid length so no worry about grooming shears. I am hoping my lil boy does not get them. Does anyone have wart issues.

I would have to say no. I have raised yorkies for over 16 years and none have had warts. At what age did yours start getting warts? Did you give your dogs annual vaccinations? Perhaps the warts were a reaction to the vaccinations.

None of our yorkies had warts, but 2 of the 4 died pretty young.
My poodle was covered with them, I think she was 10-12 when it started. Her sister didn't have any and they lived together their entire lives.

I have had 4 yorkies all now past, my last 2 were the only ones that had warts. The first to have warts I really cannot remember her exact age, I have to take a guess and say she was about 10 y/o the 2nd pup was about 14 or 15 y/o. All my babies had what vaccinations that were needed, all on the dates required. Well at least I know warts are a yorkie thing so hopefully my lil boy won't get them. I'll have to ask my vet is if it's possible warts can be a reaction to vaccinations. Thank you for your input.

Before yorkies stole my heart I had poodles, 3 in total (not all at one time lol) they passed away at ages of 13 y/o none of them had warts. I have to read the article that bjh sent me, now I am really curious. thank you for your reply.

Thank you again for this article, both pups that had warts were on medication, maybe not the one mentioned in this article, the other 2 were on no medication, so I guess warts can develop from meds. So glad I asked about the warts, thank you again.

I've had three and none of them had warts.

I don't know if yorkies are "prone" or not, but I do know that older dogs, including yorkies get a lot of skin things that thankfully are mostly benign. My 14 year old has a few areas of very small skin tumors and my vet was calling them "warts" but in fact when they were biopsied, they were diagnosed as being sebaceous hyperplasia (a benign tumor of the sebaceous gland of the skin).

My Maltese developed bumps(not sure I'd call them warts) at about age 10. I asked her vet about them and the vet called them "old age bumps". She wasn't concerned about them and I assumed she was used to seeing them on older dogs. Her groomer also never inquired about them so she had probably encountered many of them with her years of grooming.

My poodle with the warts was on medication too, phenobarbital for epilepsy. She was a very healthy dog other than the epilepsy (which was controlled by medicine) until she developed CHF around age 14.5, she was almost 16 when she died.

I read the article bjh posted, I'm not sure if that's the type of wart my poodle had, but I think if they were viral her sister would have caught them too. They were always grooming each other and were very close. My vet just said they're something old dogs get and we didn't need to do anything.

The only time the warts caused a problem was when the groomer cut the heads off about 15 warts, poor dog was so itchy. We got a new groomer after that and she only cut one wart in like 3 groomings and felt horrible about it.

Grooming was my issue with the pup that was always in a puppy clip. When my 2nd started she was about 15 y/o my vet froze them, 2 or 3 visits is all it took for one wart, no more surgery to remove warts.She only had 2 and they were around her nose. The pup that sported the puppy cut needed surgery 3 times over a 2 year period to remove warts. I always waited until she had several to do the surgery, one groomer buzzed off the heads of 5 warts after I told her where the warts were. Found another groomer. At least now I know yorkies are not prone to warts, I've been checking my lil guy weekly for them. I am sure the warts were from various meds both these babies were on.

I just had quite a few wart-like growths removed surgically from my 3 year old Yorkie. 7 cut areas and a lot of stitches. The "roots" must have been deep. Will hear what the results are, a sample has been sent for analysis.

I am surprised your vet did not use the freeze off method, My vet started freezing warts 3 years ago. I was so happy that surgery was no longer needed. My other pup use to have surgery, stitches all over her. My last baby lucked out, hers were frozen, she was 16 y/o so I was happy she didn't have to under go the surgery.
