Allergic to yorkies???

I thought that it isn't possible to be allergic to yorkies. I am allergic to dogs, as well as my brother and mother, and none of us have any reaction to Paddington. My brother is VERY allergic to other dogs.

Yet my sister SWEARS that my Bear makes her eyes water and her nose sniffle. She doesn't like him, because he's a 'dawg" (she says it so nastily). Her husband wants a dog (he grew up with dogs, and wants their son to have the same experience) and my mom thinks that my sister is making up these allergies so that he won't say "Well we'll get such and such a breed because those dogs don't affect people with allergies" I think that she is a hypochondriac, and the majority of her allergic reactions get hyped up in her head.

Anyway, what I want to know is, are there people who are allergic to yorkies???

While I think some allergies are more or less common than others, I don't think that ANY dog is completely allergen free. By that I mean that while fewer people may be allergic to yorkies, I would imagine it is possible for someone to be. JMO

Yes, I guess you are right. Nothing is absolute. It just seems so much like she is attacking me and my puppy when she brings it up. She's never said anything nice to me about him, and she'sa general complainer anyway.

Ugh! Well then...I change my answer. No, absolutely not, no one could be allergic to yorkies. If she is saying this she is just being difficult

I will tell you....I have VERY bad allergies and I have a yorkie. It is not the dog itself but the dander that causes the allergies and yorkies have very little and because they do not shed it makes it much less. HOWEVER, when Zoey is outside at the ball park, or playing in the grass or even around other dogs or especially cats... I instantly start to have runny eyes and sneeze and so she gets a bath. Otherwise I am completely allergy free with her. So while your sister is probably not having any type of reaction to your Bear, it may be what is on his coat???

There's more than one type of allergy to animals. I'm allergic to dog dander, the fur. I sneeze and get itchy eyes around shepherds & spaniels...you know, those shedding furry dogs. I'm not allergic to single coated breeds. My Jack was Maltese and I have 3 Yorkies. My daughter and her son are allergic to dog saliva, dog breath. She has asthma and has to take her Singulair before she comes to our house. Her son has sneezing, itchy eyes symptoms. For someone with that type of allergy a Yorkie is just a dog.

Thank you! Now I am much less annoyed with my sister. I didn't know someone could be allergic to their saliva or breath!

Actually, I was wondering this too, especially when I had Paddingon in my lap the other day at puppy class, and found that I had dog hair all over my pants where he was sitting! I started to freak out thinking he was losing his hair, but then realized that he had been rough-housing with the other dogs in class.

This makes sense, because I wasn't able to bathe him this past week b/c he was neutered, and my sister said it was especially bad this week. I will try giving him a bath before she comes over next time.

Yes, she could be allergic to a yorkie. All dogs have dander which is usually the culprit of allergies (this is coming from a severe allergic person, who's now on meds, lol).

The allergic reaction to small dogs and dogs with thin coats as opposed to thick double coats is that the dander is minimized, and the allergies are less. But in a severly allergic person, the amount of dander doesn't matter and anything will bother them.

Also, dog coats are notorious for bring in outside allergins such as pollen, mold, ect. That can be troublesome for people with allergies as well even if the dander isn't an issue.

What I do to help, is I have air purifiers in every room and I use a liquid called ALLERPET on my dogs after bathtime... this further strips the dander off of their coats and can be used as many times a week as needed without harming the dog .

It's a liquid that you pour onto a washcloth or towel and wipe against the fur onto your puppy. It is a leave in, and is safe for the pup.

The only place I have been able to find it, and they need to order it... is the vets office. I believe you can also order it online!

I agree. Yorkies are known to be ''Hypoallergenic'' (I know, it sounds like a face cream..lol) so it's unlikely for humans to be allergic to the yorkies itself. Like all things, [ie: carpet, furniture, air, trees] there are allergens like dust that collect on it. Therefore pollen or dust can land on yorkies and your sister may be allergic to that but thinking it's the actual dog.

Then again, she may be totally faking it as I've known some ppl that've done that to avoid having to have a dog in the house.

No.Years ago my Allergist gave me a list of non- allergetic dogs.Here goes:1.poodles 2.bedlington terriers 3.kerry blue terriers 4.yorkies of course, those are just a few, hope that helps!

Yes she could be. There was a person on here allergic to dogs that got a yorkie and ended up being allergc to it and having to rehome it
