Micro Chipping does it hurt I could kick myself for not getting this done when I had Lola spayed. I keep thinking that when she has a dental I will get it done, all my past yorkies needed a dental every year, well lucky for me Lola's teeth are almost perfectly clean. But it is bothering me that she is not chipped. So have you had this done when the dog is wide awake and does it hurt the dog????? I also never had a pup micro chipped so I am kind of clueless on the details, is there a fee you pay monthly or yearly? |
Both Bogey and Dude were microchipped at the local PAWS. The gauge of the needle is a little big but it needed to be to insert the chip. I stood right next to them and watched it be done and neither one had any type of reaction and it was over in a blink of the eye. Just get it done and have peace of mind. |
I've had two done while awake... it hurts about as much as a vaccine but only when it's done, I never noticed any soreness afterwards. Fees are yearly and most companies are similar. Some offer a reasonable lifetime fee and accept chips from other companies. |
It's quite a large gauge needle, so it's going to hurt a bit, but it won't be unbearable at all. When you measure that brief moment of pain against the benefit of what you would be doing...benefit wins every time :)! I'd get 'er done! |
thanks guys where do they usually stick the needle, is it behind the neck? |
I believe it's between the shoulder blades, Cody is adopted and micro chipped, I asked my vet where it was,she used the scanner to show me, that's where the scanner made the noise, I am sure those who just answered your question will be back, they saw just where the chip was placed. Go for it, don't wait for a dental, I have heard of many ppl that had it done while pup was awake, it's just a pinch, but I would be like you to, I HATE to see my babies get stuck with a needle. |
Katie has an international chip that was put in the shoulder. I don't pay a yearly fee. With Home Again, you can pay an optional fee for extra services, but I believe most microchips do not have fees other than the initial cost when the vet puts it in. This is for enhanced membership. From Home Again's website: If pet owners decide not to renew their annual membership, will their pets’ microchip ID codes and information still remain in the HomeAgain database? Once entered in the HomeAgain database, microchips are registered for life, whether or not pet owners renew their annual memberships, and contact information may be updated online anytime free of charge by logging into HomeAgain.com. However, if a non-member’s pet is lost, they are not eligible for the value-added benefits included with the annual HomeAgain membership, such as proactive outreach to local PetRescuer volunteers, travel assistance for found pets, the 24/7 medical hotline, etc. I used this tool to verify the information on Katie's microchip. Infinity has an international chip but my vet's scanners couldn't read the number (they have current equipment) so I had them put a second chip in her. Tink has two chips also bc the tech at the humane society only scanned her neck/shoulders and her first chip had migrated down to her ribs. It showed up on her xray, lol. |

The chip was nothing, my boys didn't even flinch! We paid $25/chip at the vaccine clinic at the local animal hospital. It took 2 seconds and they were absolutely fine. |
I got Princess & Turbo micro-chipped when they were awake:eek:. The vet tech took them to the back, so I have no idea how they did, but they assured me that they did fine. No whimper or scream or anything that I could hear.:D I even touched the area a couple of times & it didn't seem to bother them @ all. The needle that they use to insert the microchip is very sharp, so it goes in easily & painlessly. They have Home Again chips. I don't pay the annual fee for the xtra services, just paid once. |

I was glad I did Ripley's while getting spayed. She does not like needles (like her mama) and she actually cries out before the needle touches her..(like her mama).. |
I'm glad to read this thread. I have put off getting my guys chipped because ..they are never alone and we are rarely out and about...until my good friend Lisa aka sugarmamma little Sugar escaped a few weeks ago. It scared us all so bad and Lisa is one of the best mommies around and if it could happen to here it could happen to anyone, I was going to wait until the next dental and have it done, but today was our annual checkups and neither of mine need dentals now. I will schedule them to get their microchip ASAP now that I know it's no worse than a vaccine shot. |
