They put the chip inbetween the shoulder blades but dont be freaked out when the chip moves because it will

Ginger is first pup I ever chipped, Vet discussed firmly with me for several minutes, lol. As I have never lost, had escape or stolen, felt no need, had previous Yorkie tattooed. Was concerned about feeling chip when petting, he said he would do his best to not let that happen. It took a week for scab to heal, but sure enough I can't find it.

I can feel Katie's chip, probably because it's in her shoulder area. It definitely doesn't bother her if I massage her skin where the chip is, and it feels like a piece of rice.

I was going to wait until the next dental and have it done, but today was our annual checkups and neither of mine need dentals now.
I will schedule them to get their microchip ASAP now that I know it's no worse than a vaccine shot.

Very good choice and now that I have read this entire thread I will have Hannah's chip checked out next time I take her to the vet.

thanks for the info and I am glad it has helped others as well. before making an appointment at my vet I am going to check with the county shelter and humane society several people told me that many cities provide this at much lower costs than a vet does. for those with several dogs the savings can be significant

this is correct. Humane societies encourage to spay, nurturer & micro-chip, they offer lower prices to make it more affordable for ppl that cannot pay what vets charge or have multiple pets.

Not a bad idea. You could call your vet to check the price if that's easier for you time wise. When I was considering putting in an American chip in Katie, my vet was charging about $50, and he's in Westhampton, yet I always find his fees reasonable.

bummer our county only offers a few clinics in the spring for $20.00 each, my vet
charges $45.00

I can't imagine it NOT hurting. The needle is huge. The chip is the size of a grain of long grain rice, so you can imagine how large that needle needs to be to put it in. I have chips in their needles sent to me from YTNR when I have a foster that needs a chip so I've seen them up close. Katie had a big dried up clump of blood at the site. But it's better to do it than not.

Also, don't get a chip and then forget to register it!

The needle gauge seems really thick, but neither of my pups made a peep when they had their chips put in. The vet did it in the room with us.

Same here. I think it was harder for the vet than the pups lol!

I'm so glad I read this, I am considering having little Bella chipped, but also wasn't sure about the way they do it and if it would hurt her. I think, even if it does hurt for a second or two, it's worth while.
