| High Protein Foods for Yorkie Puppies Hi, my name is Felicia, my Yorkie, Ellie I am happy to be here at Yorkie Talk.com I am not computer savy at all , but I have a few tips from some nice people here, so I will try and make it work. My 1 1/2 yr old pup, so demanding, a personality all her own, she is fun and full of energy, but she is the boss it seems Anyway, I do have a question about Blue Wilderness High Protein food for my pup. She seems to love it, eats my daughter's dog's bowl of it when we are there. Just wondering, not to drag it on, does anyone know if High Protein foods can PROMOTE kidney disease, since Yorkies are prone to it, especially when elderly. I had two other Yorkies at one time that passed at the ages of 15 and 16 from that horrid disease . I gave them dialysis at home for as long as I could. Anyone's help here would be so appreciated! My vet said it's ok, only if they don't have crystals in their urine??? Thanks! and Nice to meet you! |

| Hi Felicia, Welcome to YorkieTalk. Personally I don't recommend high protein dog foods for yorkies. Hopefully someone else on here will have some experience with feeding high protein foods. It seems like I had heard that high protein foods might lead to pancreatitis.

| My guys eat premade raw food (Primal & Stella & Chewy's), it has higher protein & fat but the protein is of high quality & it's very easily digestible. They do excellent on it. Some Yorkies are prone to pancreatitis, kidney disease, liver shunt, etc., so unless they have an underlying medical issue, a higher protein diet shouldn't be a problem. Personally, I do not like higher protein kibbles. It's lacking moisture, so it puts a lot of stress on the kidneys & other vital organs. When I used to feed my guys kibble, I always moistened it w/hot water & gave it to them soft. Most of the time, I mixed in canned food or topped it w/fresh proteins, like poached salmon.

| High Protein Foods Blue Wilderness is supposedly one of the best foods there are for any dog. I just get worried about the high protein and their kidneys...so I'm not sure what to do. She does love the food, but I certainly don't want her to die young from kidney disease. I wish we could just trust in what our vets say...oh well. |

| I don't really like Blue Buffalo at all, has nothing to do with the protein. lol. I don't think high protein in general is an issue for healthy dogs, but moreso where the protein is coming from. I pay more attention to the ash % and calcium/phosphorus levels as that is what can be damaging on the kidneys long term. But I do think high protein kibbles are kind of a waste for most pet dogs.... I personally don't like to go above like 32%.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | No, high protein can't "promote" kidney or liver disease. High protein is fine for healthy dogs, in fact I prefer it. It's only a problem if the dog has a pre-existing health issue that is affected by protein somehow.
