Finally I've decided

Well I've finally decide to be brave and have Crystal 'spayed' on the 8th, she'll also be micro-chipped and have her little 'meggies' checked at the at the same time. I've absolutely agonized about this decision, as this tiny (7lb) dog has become so precious to both of us.

I won't sleep at all the night before and I want to wait for her until the op's finished. The Vet is highly recommended and wants to test her for suitability first, which has kind of re-assured me, as they suggested it. Hope I'm doing the right thing by her?

It will be fine! Gracie is well under 3 pounds (I keep waiting for her to tip the scales at a massive 3.5) and did really well, though I will admit that I called to check on her several times during the day.

Best wishes to you and her!

Thank you for your kind wishes, I bet at 3lbs she a real little darling!:)

I know spay day is hard for all of us. My husband and I (retired) cleaned the house like it has never been cleaned before the day our pup got spayed.

She is going to be fine, better than fine...such a lucky little girl being so loved.

:) Martin - she'll be absolutely fine....she'll come home a little woozy and will need LOADS of extra cuddles and treats (probably for a year or so...:p) and she'll smile an extra-dazzling smile at you - and you'll know you've done the right thing :D

By the way, have you got/will you get a 'little lampshade' collar for her - just in case? I know you're worried - but honestly it's a really simple procedure - and in the meantime please, no more watching Paul O'Grady....;) :D

Hugs from Harry and I to the 3 of you x

I know she will do great. Lexi was back to her normal self just a couple days after getting spayed. In fact, the hardest part is keeping her from running and jumping around too much while her incision heals!

Wylie's Mom 06-30-2014 09:03 AM

Your little one will do great - try not to worry, though I know it's unavoidable. As long as you're doing pre-surgical bloodwork, you should be able to rest assured that she will do just great.

Btw, what is a "meggie" :p? I'm pretty good w/ British slang, but this one has me guessing...

Good for you, I think you have made the best choice for Crystal.

It will be a worrisome day, as it always is for all of us, but I'm sure it will go well. Be sure to take home pain meds to have on hand if needed. Our vets offer them as an option at a small additional cost; it is always better to have them in case she needs them rather than return to the vet if she does have some pain after. It will also help her relax and sleep in the first 24-48 hrs.

My girls all were a bit slow for a day after, but then I was amazed at how they snapped back in the next few days. I didn't even have to use the e-collar on them as the stitches were done internally, and they didn't lick. I had baby onsies (pajama like garment) on hand, but didn't need that either.

You and Crystal will be in my thoughts on the 8th, good luck.

:teethysmi - Sorry, they're teeth - goodness knows why...!!! :D

I think it is the best decision. Sending many well wishes for a safe and successful procedure for Crystal.

tomorrow will 2 weeks since lola had her dental and she was sluggish the first few days as she needed more teeth pulled than we originally thought. she is 5.5 pounds and did very very well. I was a worried wreck but she came through just fine and she is almost 7 years old. :)

joyce evans 06-30-2014 11:09 AM

So many of us know exactly how you feel but you made the right decision and I think she'll be just fine. I cried and didn't want to leave my girls but my vet didn't want me to sit in the waiting room. I think we should be able to stay just like in human hospitals. With all my girls I came home, put cell phone in my pocket and cleaned house like crazy. I was hesitant to have my girls spayed because I felt like I was putting my daughters through surgery. How crazy is that?? They are all spayed now and my worries are gone. No more diapers! I was never worried about them being bred I just didn't like the mess and I could tell that they were miserable when in heat. Not to mention some of the problems that come with an intact female. Time will pass and all of this will be over before you know it. I'll be thinking of and praying for your little Crystal but most of all I'll be thinking of and praying for you because I think it is harder on us than it is on them. You'll be surprised how fast she will bounce back. You will use the word "no" a lot for about 2 weeks after her spay. She will want to do things that she's not supposed to do!

LunarBerry 06-30-2014 11:25 AM

I know how ya feel. I got one I'll be picking up soon and I'll be going through that sometime next year X.x;; I'm trying to figure if I should let her have her first heat or try to get it before then. The breeder mentioned his girls on average go into their first heat around 9 months, give or take. the vet says she's gotta have all her needed shots out of the way first, which is fine by me lol ^^

lisaly 06-30-2014 12:01 PM

Martin, you are such a devoted dad, and if am certain that Crystal is in the best of care because of you. My Rainbow Bridge babies had yearly dentals. I never got used to the anesthesia, but they always did fine. I understand your worries and care. I worried too when all of my girls were spayed. I will be very happy when I hear that Crystal will be back home after her spay with her devoted dad watching over her.

gemy 06-30-2014 12:37 PM

Doc pre -op blood work should rule out any concerns for liver function etal.

She is with your well known vet, and will likely do very very well.

Going under anesthesia is a very very small risk given the vet knows the protocols for small breed dogs.

I believe you are making the right choice for her, and at the appropriate age.

pink66 06-30-2014 03:50 PM

I'm sure you've put a great deal of research and thought into this decision, and that's all any of us can do in these situations. I also believe you've made the right decision for your baby girl, and with your love and excellent care she will be back to normal before you know it. I've always had my babies spayed and neutered, and I believe it has made their lives better by them no longer being ruled by their hormones going crazy.

Spay day may be easier for you if you and your wife plan activities that will keep you busy for most of the day. My vet wanted to keep Puff overnight, but when I discovered that she would be alone all night we came to agreement that she would be better off at home under vigilant observation. I also strongly recommend having pain meds on hand.

I'm sure all 3 of you will come through this ordeal just fine.
BTW are you still considering adding a baby brother or sister to your family?
