Finally I've decided Well I've finally decide to be brave and have Crystal 'spayed' on the 8th, she'll also be micro-chipped and have her little 'meggies' checked at the at the same time. I've absolutely agonized about this decision, as this tiny (7lb) dog has become so precious to both of us. I won't sleep at all the night before and I want to wait for her until the op's finished. The Vet is highly recommended and wants to test her for suitability first, which has kind of re-assured me, as they suggested it. Hope I'm doing the right thing by her? |
It will be fine! Gracie is well under 3 pounds (I keep waiting for her to tip the scales at a massive 3.5) and did really well, though I will admit that I called to check on her several times during the day. Best wishes to you and her! |

I know spay day is hard for all of us. My husband and I (retired) cleaned the house like it has never been cleaned before the day our pup got spayed. She is going to be fine, better than fine...such a lucky little girl being so loved. |

By the way, have you got/will you get a 'little lampshade' collar for her - just in case? I know you're worried - but honestly it's a really simple procedure - and in the meantime please, no more watching Paul O'Grady....;) :D Hugs from Harry and I to the 3 of you x |
I know she will do great. Lexi was back to her normal self just a couple days after getting spayed. In fact, the hardest part is keeping her from running and jumping around too much while her incision heals! |
Your little one will do great - try not to worry, though I know it's unavoidable. As long as you're doing pre-surgical bloodwork, you should be able to rest assured that she will do just great. Btw, what is a "meggie" :p? I'm pretty good w/ British slang, but this one has me guessing... |
Good for you, I think you have made the best choice for Crystal. It will be a worrisome day, as it always is for all of us, but I'm sure it will go well. Be sure to take home pain meds to have on hand if needed. Our vets offer them as an option at a small additional cost; it is always better to have them in case she needs them rather than return to the vet if she does have some pain after. It will also help her relax and sleep in the first 24-48 hrs. My girls all were a bit slow for a day after, but then I was amazed at how they snapped back in the next few days. I didn't even have to use the e-collar on them as the stitches were done internally, and they didn't lick. I had baby onsies (pajama like garment) on hand, but didn't need that either. You and Crystal will be in my thoughts on the 8th, good luck. |

I think it is the best decision. Sending many well wishes for a safe and successful procedure for Crystal. tomorrow will 2 weeks since lola had her dental and she was sluggish the first few days as she needed more teeth pulled than we originally thought. she is 5.5 pounds and did very very well. I was a worried wreck but she came through just fine and she is almost 7 years old. :) |
So many of us know exactly how you feel but you made the right decision and I think she'll be just fine. I cried and didn't want to leave my girls but my vet didn't want me to sit in the waiting room. I think we should be able to stay just like in human hospitals. With all my girls I came home, put cell phone in my pocket and cleaned house like crazy. I was hesitant to have my girls spayed because I felt like I was putting my daughters through surgery. How crazy is that?? They are all spayed now and my worries are gone. No more diapers! I was never worried about them being bred I just didn't like the mess and I could tell that they were miserable when in heat. Not to mention some of the problems that come with an intact female. Time will pass and all of this will be over before you know it. I'll be thinking of and praying for your little Crystal but most of all I'll be thinking of and praying for you because I think it is harder on us than it is on them. You'll be surprised how fast she will bounce back. You will use the word "no" a lot for about 2 weeks after her spay. She will want to do things that she's not supposed to do! |
I know how ya feel. I got one I'll be picking up soon and I'll be going through that sometime next year X.x;; I'm trying to figure if I should let her have her first heat or try to get it before then. The breeder mentioned his girls on average go into their first heat around 9 months, give or take. the vet says she's gotta have all her needed shots out of the way first, which is fine by me lol ^^ |
Martin, you are such a devoted dad, and if am certain that Crystal is in the best of care because of you. My Rainbow Bridge babies had yearly dentals. I never got used to the anesthesia, but they always did fine. I understand your worries and care. I worried too when all of my girls were spayed. I will be very happy when I hear that Crystal will be back home after her spay with her devoted dad watching over her. |
Doc pre -op blood work should rule out any concerns for liver function etal. She is with your well known vet, and will likely do very very well. Going under anesthesia is a very very small risk given the vet knows the protocols for small breed dogs. I believe you are making the right choice for her, and at the appropriate age. |
I'm sure you've put a great deal of research and thought into this decision, and that's all any of us can do in these situations. I also believe you've made the right decision for your baby girl, and with your love and excellent care she will be back to normal before you know it. I've always had my babies spayed and neutered, and I believe it has made their lives better by them no longer being ruled by their hormones going crazy. Spay day may be easier for you if you and your wife plan activities that will keep you busy for most of the day. My vet wanted to keep Puff overnight, but when I discovered that she would be alone all night we came to agreement that she would be better off at home under vigilant observation. I also strongly recommend having pain meds on hand. I'm sure all 3 of you will come through this ordeal just fine. BTW are you still considering adding a baby brother or sister to your family? |
I couldn't sleep the night before Cookie got spayed either (she was also 7lbs at the time). It was a tough couple of weeks keeping her in one room so she couldn't jump on things and only taking her out for potty on a leash until she got her stitches out. Especially since she was her playful self a day and a half after the surgery! |
Spaying your lil girl is the best thing health wise you can do for her. She will be fine, you'll be amazed at how fast they recover. We all worry, it's natural when we love our lil furbutts so much, this is the wisest thing you are doing for that lil girl. |
May I thank you all for the time you have taken here to offer support and empathy, I really do appreciate it. I should also have said I'm a complete coward too! I could have had the job done today, but delayed it for a week! Selfishly I just wanted those wonderful long runs along the beach in the evening and our time together afterwards on the staithe, (landing stage) when she nestles inside my jacket to go on a just little longer... Also again selfishly to prepare me for the ordeal of waiting for her to come round - I just hope she forgives me? |
You're not being selfish! You love your baby girl and want to do what's best for her, and I'm sure she knows how loved she is! Sometimes being a parent means making the tough decisions, but if these decisions are always made with love and in her best interest, then you won't go wrong. (Hugs!) |

I've just watched a TV program about a rescued 8 year old Yorkie who made a good recovery from surgery, (thank goodness) which has boosted my confidence about next week. How long do they need restraining from a run post surgery? Crystal belts at least 2,500 yards every evening in 40 yard recoveries of her ball on the soft beaches in front of our home, as well as a 2 mile walk with her mom most mornings. She adores this time almost more than eating! Her toilet facilities are in our utility area anyway, so she doesn't need to go out for those needs. I'm just concerned about all that energy needing an outlet? |
I know exactly how you feel! I'm getting my pup spayed tomorrow. I know it's nerve wracking, but it is the best thing to do health wise. I'll let you know if I come up with any good ways to get their energy out when they can't run or jump! I'm thinking I'll be going on lots of walks! Keep us updated with how everything goes. :aimeeyork |

Would you believe it? Yesterday I noticed that Crystals rear mammary channels seem a little enlarged. The Vulva is normal though. This morning they seem far less so, normal even. Her last cycle (her first) was about 3 months ago, quite late at then 14months old. I thought about telling the Vet, but as she's booked in on Tuesday anyway I think I'll just turn up. Knowing myself, I'll pick any reason to get out of it anyway! I thought she might be entering her next season early, but apparently not. I think I'm just a hyper worried dad maybe? |
I have been thinking about you and Crystal, so I returned to your thread. You will need to wait a couple of weeks before Crystal is able to run again, so she can heal properly. I know how tough that is. I would mention any concerns I had on Tuesday. A baby onesie might be good to have, especially if the stitches are external so you can avoid a cone for your girl. I know you will dote on her and make Crystal feel very loved and secure. My thoughts and prayers are with you. You are a great dad, and you are so lucky to have found each other. For Katie's dad ( and for me, too), the sun rises and sets on our little girl, and she has brought us so many reasons to smile each day. Please let us know how it goes on Tuesday. I will be very happy when she is back home in the arms of someone who loves her so dearly. |
My Macaroin was 3.5 lbs when he was neutered. Crystal will be fine, sending prayers and special thoughts |

:) Martin....as ever, we're all thinking of the 3 of you, too....:) A baby onesie's a good idea - far better than a crashy-bashy lampshade collar! Crystal might not need any of it, but a good idea to have just in case? Don't forget to keep us up-dated - and Harry sends Crystal an extra-special licky kiss, too :D x |
Puff wanted to send lots of kisses to both you and Crystal. I won't tell you not to worry because of course you are going to worry--but remember your friends here who can help. We got Puff spayed right around 9 months then she ended up having her anal glands removed at 1 year, and I felt like a horrible mom for having her put under twice in just 3 months. She did just fine, as I'm sure Crystal will. Please keep us updated. A onesie is great to have--I couldn't force myself to put that awful hard collar on her, and don't forget the pain meds! |
We'll be thinking of you Martin and your Crystal, also Lenaberry and Gracie?. Like others here, we'll be checking in to see how your doing. It is an anxious time, wishing you all the best. Pippi will be going through this in a few months (she's in season right now) Hope you can keep your selves active, so you don't over worry. |
