Health insurance - mandatory? How many of the yorkie talkers here have health insurance for their yorkie? If you do, would you say it is mandatory to get it at an early age? Thanks! :) |
I know a lot of people on here recommend it. Luckily we have enough in savings and have credit cards if there were ever an emergency. I think it is a great idea if you aren't able to put enough money away for your pups should something horrible happen. |
Had I gotten it when Callie was a pup it would have helped a lot. She has had to have two knee surgery because of her LP and one was $3,000 the other was $2,000. It will not cover pre existing conditions so sooner is better. |
with my vet it covers the spading and many other things. It's totally worth it. My daughter and her fiancé use the same vet and they figured it was good for their older dogs, too. |
It's beneficial to get it early so there are no pre-existing conditions. It's not Obamacare so the pre-existing problems will be excluded from coverage ;) |
Best to buy pet insurance when they are young and it is a good peace of mind. Susan |
I used to not believe in Ins - rather, I believed in just saving money, in case. Even though we have ready-money if ever needed, I now fully believe in insurance for my kiddos and have it on all 3. I have Healthy Paws. |
I also believe in health insurance. I have petplan on mine & it has definitely been worth it! It covered 80% of Stanley's MRI & other tests (over $3500), and Phoebe's cataract surgery ($3000+), as well as smaller claims for teeth extractions etc. It gives peace of mind to know its there if/when I need it. I used to think it was a waste of $$, but after the past 2 years it has MORE than paid for itself! |
I had a bad experience with health insurance with my first Yorkie, so I never gave it another chance. I got health insurance and made 9 monthly payments. It was then Eddie had an injury and needed leg surgery. They told me I had to be a member for a year before I could make a claim like that. If I'd read the small print, maybe I wouldn't have felt so cheated. |

Wow! Do you mind if I ask what company that was? |
To be honest, I don't even remember. It was one of the main ones. |

I didn't have health insurance for my previous yorkie and used savings to cover his high vet bills towards the end of his life. I have insurance now. I think it's beneficial and has already paid for itself . Depending on the company and your vet you might be able to do something were they insurance company pays the vet directly. We have Pets Best. |

Same here, was going to just use savings as we had VPI before and they no where near paid what we had paid in premiums and after Sig reached 8 years the premiums started jumping up every year. Posted a thread here and a few comments got me thinking and taking another look, got Healthy Paws for $37 per month, pays 90% and $100 annual deductible, 1 year wait for Hip dysplasia, no tricks or limits. |
Mandatory? no. But, I woudnt want to gamble on it!!! Only have used mine once.... but, you never know..so be safe instead of sorry!!!! |
