Suggested testing..Bile acid? Hi all, My little girl from my last litter is 11 ozs now at 6 1/2 weeks. She is really improving. Where she used to just sit alot she is walking around quite a bit (still with wide back legs) She is trying to eat hard food now, but only manages to roll it around in her mouth........but goes to town on wet always! Giving her a bit of nutrical 3 times daily to try to fatten her up and get her healthy. I spend so much time with her Im getting attached!!!!!!!!!!! A real no no for me! My hubby says "you know you are going to keep her!" But I wont, only if I find something wrong. SHe will be here a long time and Im wanting to run some tests on her. Of course Ill talk to my vet what tests do you guys think might be of help? Before I sell her I want to have a health clearance. SInce she is so small and maturing much slower then her mates.............should I ask for a bile acid? Her stance is wide legged.......should I ask for xrays? Just wanted you alls opinoin!

puppy For what it is worth, I would not do anything right now. She is not showing any symtoms of being ill..she is eating well, no falling down, no seizures, no pain etc. If you take her to the vet for testing at this tiny stage it could stress her beyond her limit...then you have a very sick baby..might even die from it. Get the others placed and then you can watch her day by day. You might have her legs or hips xrayed in a few weeks...but this is what I have learned...if she has liver shunt, you can not treat her at the 11oz stage..the vet would advise letting her get a bit older and strong for testing. If there is a hip problem, the vet will not operate on an 11 oz pup..so you are in a "wait and see" mode. I know you want to know now, so you can plan for the future to place her...but some answers take a long time and you have to set you emotions on hold for the time being..hard to do, but breeders must think of puppy first...which you are doing well..

THank you Pat for your very respected information. I really value it, you are so knowledgeable and your input helps me so much. When I grow up to be a seasoned breeder I want to be just like you! My main concern is if and when its time for my angel to find a new home that the owners get a healthy girl. No hurry to test her now, i agree totally with you about stressing her. .........she sure does pull on my heart strings....toddles to see me now. I need to get a new pic of her up.

thanks You are sweet...I had so little help for many years, no internet forums, wasn't allowed to join the Yorkie clubs until I started showing.. I think it is easier to join now. I learned so much by trial and error, sometimes my Yorkies took the brunt of my lack of knowledge..I am sorry to say. Want a good laugh?..I called my 35 yr old daughter at work and read her your posts...she had a good laugh! Said she is happy to hear someone wants to grow up to be like her mother, because she sure doesn't!!!

Oh! That baby sounds so cute! I would take her in a minute as I have nothing but time. My birds and dog get more attention then they actually deserve, I am afraid. I hope she comes out okay in the end. She sounds soooooo adorable. Can you post a picture? Would love to see her! Pat

This sounds familiar...... Sounds alot like Lil Bit....when I first went to see her she was 12 weeks....weighed 13 ounces. The breeder had already sent her littermate to a home, but was keeping her back to "see what happens".... I was initially interested in this puppy because I prefer to take home 'older pups'...just seem to have better temperments and adjust easier. The breeder was not sure about her and did not want to sell her.....mainly because she "did not like giving money back"....(I swear, her exact words). I convinced her to take a deposit and I waited 2 weeks to see if she gained any weight. 2 weeks later (@ 14 weeks) she had gained up to 1 # and seemed to eat well....I was a bit attatched to her and wanted to get her to my vet...something seemed to be wrong but not sure what.....I convinced the breeder to sell her to me....I am a peds nurse and was comfortable with all the feeding and sugar issues.......The breeders deal was to give me 24 hours to get her to a vet....if nothing major was found then Lil Bit was mine with no returning.... I rolled the dice and took her home....Got her to the vet the next day...He found nothing wrong and even did some basic bloodwork.....everything checked out ok!!! He was concerned about the large 'molera' (hole in top of skull)..and i thought her eyes "were not quite right"....He dismissed the possibility of hydrocephalus just because she was over 3 months old and had no seizures....he thought the wide leg thing was due to lack of muscle strenght related to her small size...and he said her eyes may do crazy things until she is 6 months old. For the past 5 weeks I have watched her ALOT!!!!! Her eyes still seem a bit 'out of sinc' and she, too, had a wide leg stance like her back legs were struggling to keep her up. But she has also done remarkably well...she now eats really well and (finally!!) having normal poops...she is energetic and playful.......her weight yesterday at the vets was 2 pounds 5 ounces @ age 4 1/2 months!!!!!! The vet and I have discussed her often..he is pleased and a bit surprised at how well she is doing....(he initially advised me to pass on her...look for something healthy!)...he thinks she is just one of those puppies that "starts slow"...she has always seemed a bit 'delayed' in her development, but with Apple for a physical therapist she has improved greatly. She just today did finally go up almost the full flight of stairs (carpeted)...but cannot jump onto the couch..still requires a 'ramp'.... Your pup may be the same....just slow starter and needs some time and weight to get going good.....Just watch her and see how things develop......Like others have said, you will not be letting her go to any home any time soon.....and too much medical intervention may be hazardous to her....
