Nor can I. Totally ridiculous...afraid of a 10 pound dog? He definitely needs to find a different line of work. That dog was not capable of killing him .. the fact that he would see fit to KILL a small dog tells me more than I need to know about him. Horrible.

The people sticking up for him would not be if it happened to their dog. Anyone's dog can escape their yard....everyone says they watch their dogs at all times; but I know that there are always times in a dog's life where it can escape. It has happened to me and I am super vigilant.

If it were my dog I would share the responsibility. I have a 60# english bulldog and a 2# yorkie. My bully is super friendly but becomes overexcited when she meets new people. I can understand how someone would mistake her friendliness for being an attack if they're already scared of dogs and considering she has her mouth open in a perpetual grin and all one can see is her teeth :D. Also, my 2# yorkie is aggressive which is why I do keep him away from ppl but if he were to "attack" someone I wouldn't expect them to stand idly and allow him to bite them instead of defending themselves. They would literally have to leave his area or he would keep coming for them. To me size is irrelevant when it comes to what one fears. I don't think anyone so far has sided with the mail carrier some can just understand both sides.

That is exactly what I said when I heard about it. I'm not sticking up for the mailman...he did a really stupid thing. I was just trying to explain the way a mailman feels after a dog bite.

Wow, so very sad. I couldn't defend this mail carrier. If you're that afraid, you carry something that keeps the animal at a distance. Afterall, he doesn't know what sized of dogs are roaming a neighborhood at any given moment. You'd always be prepared if you're that afraid. He picked up a rock and smashed this little dog with it. That's so personal. :thumbdown:thumbdown

I thought mace was 'mandatory' for mailmen. Our 15 pound cockapoo was maced by the mailman. She slipped out our front door when we were walking out, because she wanted to get at the mailman.

There is something 'special' about mailmen that many dogs hate. Our cockapoo never made a peep at anyone else who came or went. Only people wearing the mail uniform.

What this man did to the terrier is disgusting and completely unnecessary. As I wrote earlier, I had an intense fear of off leash dogs, including small dogs, but never even in self defense felt the urge to use force against them. I delivered newspapers when I was in grade school and racked up bites from dogs of all sizes (luckily never any serious damage).

I do not dismiss people who fear my little 9 pound dogs. I also do not agree that a person who fears dogs should not have a job outdoors -- loose dogs can be anywhere. However, I think there is something distinctly wrong with a person who crushes a rock on a 10 pound dog. I think there has to more going on with this guy.

Not everyone has mailboxes on a pole kind of thing. Some have boxes on the wall by the front door, some people have mail slots in the front door. Also, packages don't fit in most mailboxes. I'm not sure what the case was here.

We have traditional mailbox on a pole, but our mailman has to bring things to our door almost every day.

Sorry, I do not come even close to agreeing with you. This guy was not afraid or he would not have picked up a rock....he would have run. I too have had aggressive dogs .. small ones. I WOULD expect them to get away from one of them. NOT smash it in the head with a rock. As someone else said, it is entirely too personal of a response.

I hope he is not allowed to continue delivering mail if he has such "fears". If he is found innocent and keeps his job, I hope it is an inside job.

I agree, when did he have the time to bend over and pick up a rock if he was so scared? Also agree that the act is too personal.

You don't have to agree with me, that's the great thing about a forum. My first instinct would be to get away (not run but walk) also but if the animal pursued me and I felt in danger all bets are off. Some ppl freeze in shock or in fear when they are faced with certain things. I do hope he gets retraining if he is kept on routes but preferably gets moved to a different department (desk work). As for a 10 lb dog not being able to inflict much damage, I disagree. If a dog bites enough it'll inflict damage and any damage imo is too much.

No, I don't have to...I agree with that statement.

I do, however, disagree with your last statement. I have been bitten by small dogs and what they did to me did not warrant my beating them to death. I am quite sure he could have done something else other than KILLING the dog......and we must remember no one heard or saw any aggression from this small dog.
