Male marking Ditto was born 10/20/13. He is scheduled to be neutered on 5/13/14. He has started marking on artificial plants in the house..I discipline him strongly when I see it. Is it possible to ever stop this behavior? Thanks |
It may stop, but it can be hard to stop. What do you mean you discipline him? Some types of discipline will actually make his behaviors in general much much worse. Do you mean you're just telling him "no" and then showing him the correct place to go potty? Neutering may help, but it's no guarantee. Some dogs mark even after neutering. |

1 Attachment(s) Does he have a designated pee area in the house? We have it in our bathrooms since we live in a condo. I prop up water bottles (filled w/water) & wrap the bottles in wee wee pad. The boys use it as a marker, we've had zero accidents, but we have no carpet here (laminate). My boys naturally used the water bottle, I didn't even have to train them to use it. Attachment 398614 I would remove all the plants too & anything else he used as a marker. Spanking will not make him stop marking...if anything, it will make him scared of you. A firm 'No' & taking him to the designated pee area & saying the key words, 'pee pee' or 'poo poo' (whatever word you use) will suffice. You might have to do this a couple of x's for him to get it. They're very smart animals, they understand our words, tone & emotions. Please do not reprimand w/your hand. |
One of my sisters males does this despite being neutered. When he comes to my house he is awful. he always gets a very firm No, but he still does it. I think he does it more in my house as all my dogs are female. |

I'll try this... BTW..I'm one of those barbaric parents that also spanked their child.. |

I'm not black and white about most things, but about hitting animals - it's absolutely 100% wrong - not only morally, but it does nothing to achieve the desired goal. In fact, it usually results in the opposite. |
"Spanking a dog is not something a dog understands as consequences - it merely will teach him to be scared of you. It could also cause the dog to try and pee in places that you can't see." And how is this different from scolding? |

Aversion training is going out of fashion, and by that I mean harsh corrections be it spanking, harsh lead corrections etc, and most especially with a puppy (which I believe yours still is). You may need to go back to tethering him to you so that he is 100% supervised when he is out of his crate, and take him for regular potty breaks. Also the areas that he has marked in have to be liberally doused with an enzymatic cleaner and then washed off. Once in awhile Razz a full 5 yr old male will mark, but not often anymore. But then I outdoor train so no leg lifting at all in my house:) |

My older Yorkie Max is a very strong willed little guy, but I can attest that positive reinforcement training is so much more productive in achieving the results you want. This does not exclude a firm "no". Good potty habits are a sport in our house and we make everything fun. May sound silly, but my 2 boy Yorkies are awesome in the potty/no marking department. |
Mr. Lawman, there are bellybands and training schools for pups. I strongly suggest you do both, sooner rather than later. A friend of mine had huge problems and this helped tremendously. If your really not that deeply bonded or find your not in to this breed I'd even be happy to take him off your hands for you... |
Spanking will just make him hide and go potty in places you cant see. I came from a family of spankers too it was my husband that made me see it was wrong and with a tiny dog like a yorkie it wouldnt take much to hurt them |
All you're gonna do is make him scared of the pen if you use it as a form of punishment. You should have tried crate training to teach him that he only has to pee and poo in a designated spot. |
Lawman, are you familiar with 'submissive peeing'? If you spank your dog and yell, you risk having your dog becoming so scared that he will become a submissive peer. Some have such problems that they pee just seeing their humans. Also, dogs do not have padding on their butts like humans, and they have tails, so you risk injuring him. Belly bands -- as Lynzy suggested. These are great backup for dogs who mark indoors. |

Yep. Dogs live in the moment. |
Come over here, Lawman. Let me smack you across the nose. Did you learn anything? Do you understand why I am smacking you? Nope? Didn't think so. Just as you have no clue as to why I did what I did, neither does your dog. |

Getting him neutered will help a lot but you will still need to use a good enzyme cleaner in the house to remove the smells. Even if you cannot smell it they can. I grew up where spanking a child was the approved method also but spanking a dog is a whole different thing. Dogs learn aggression that way and I am sure you don't want a biter on your hands. |
Update: Ditto has not had a single accident since I last disciplined him on May 4, 2014. He was neutered on May 13, 2014 and has not heisted his leg inside since being neutered. He still heists outside but that's okay with me..I'm just very glad he finally started peeing outside. Before, he would not go outside no matter how long we stayed out..He would immediately go to his pen after we came in and pee or poop.. His neutering was difficult and his stitches are causing him quite a bit of discomfort. His testicles did not drop and the vet had to cut him very high in two places to get them..He is quite a champ and I'm comfortable that he has this house breaking stuff all figured out... |
they can tell from a tone in your voice a firm no, but spanking is not good, he will just get fearful of you |
