Male marking Ditto was born 10/20/13. He is scheduled to be neutered on 5/13/14. He has started marking on artificial plants in the house..I discipline him strongly when I see it. Is it possible to ever stop this behavior? Thanks |
It may stop, but it can be hard to stop. What do you mean you discipline him? Some types of discipline will actually make his behaviors in general much much worse. Do you mean you're just telling him "no" and then showing him the correct place to go potty? Neutering may help, but it's no guarantee. Some dogs mark even after neutering. |

The boys use it as a marker, we've had zero accidents, but we have no carpet here (laminate). My boys naturally used the water bottle, I didn't even have to train them to use it. Attachment 398614 I would remove all the plants too & anything else he used as a marker. Spanking will not make him stop marking...if anything, it will make him scared of you. A firm 'No' & taking him to the designated pee area & saying the key words, 'pee pee' or 'poo poo' (whatever word you use) will suffice. You might have to do this a couple of x's for him to get it. They're very smart animals, they understand our words, tone & emotions. Please do not reprimand w/your hand. |
One of my sisters males does this despite being neutered. When he comes to my house he is awful. he always gets a very firm No, but he still does it. I think he does it more in my house as all my dogs are female. |

Aversion training is going out of fashion, and by that I mean harsh corrections be it spanking, harsh lead corrections etc, and most especially with a puppy (which I believe yours still is). You may need to go back to tethering him to you so that he is 100% supervised when he is out of his crate, and take him for regular potty breaks. Also the areas that he has marked in have to be liberally doused with an enzymatic cleaner and then washed off. Once in awhile Razz a full 5 yr old male will mark, but not often anymore. But then I outdoor train so no leg lifting at all in my house:) |

This does not exclude a firm "no". Good potty habits are a sport in our house and we make everything fun. May sound silly, but my 2 boy Yorkies are awesome in the potty/no marking department. |
Mr. Lawman, there are bellybands and training schools for pups. I strongly suggest you do both, sooner rather than later. A friend of mine had huge problems and this helped tremendously. If your really not that deeply bonded or find your not in to this breed I'd even be happy to take him off your hands for you... |
Spanking will just make him hide and go potty in places you cant see. I came from a family of spankers too it was my husband that made me see it was wrong and with a tiny dog like a yorkie it wouldnt take much to hurt them |
