Actually, Matese, I already spent my day doing plenty of things for my dog. For one, I took my elderly girl to the dermatologist so a suspicious skin tag could be taken off. That's quite a far cry from what you do -- sitting at home calling people stupid while your dog has intestinal bleeding for 17 months. So please, don't tell me how to spend my days, I am not the one dispensing chinese herbs to my dog and posting weird rants about toxic water and the like.

My heart is telling me, because Cody was left untreated for 13 months, there will be no cure for him, and prolonged Colitis I have read MAY lead to Cushings disease . My vet is determined to get him back on the road to recovery, however, should this not happen I will want to seek another venue. I have seen many members advise posters to bring their baby to a vet school and was wondering in Cody’s case of Colitis would this be beneficial for him. I may / can be wrong about this, but I HAVE to say it, so no offence to anyone out there. I hear the TERM “VET SCHOOL” which to me means, ppl learning to become veterinarians. I do not want my baby to be used as a “guinea pig” for ppl that are “learning“. I am sure these vet schools have the most modern technology as far as equipment goes…… I am from the ole school where a used car was just that, now it is referred to as “a pre-owned car” when two diff. breeds of dogs mated they were called MUTTS, now they are called “designer dogs” well I go with the flow and accept the “pre-owned car” and the “designer dog” and if a “vet school” has changed over the years I will accept that to. So any advise on why going to a “vet school” is better then your own vet. Please no nasty, rude, badgering post, I just want to be informed and updated on modern technology, I need to save this precious lil 2 y/o that has many years of life ahead of him. I want him to be healthy and to enjoy his life, I will go to any extreme to find a cure for this new little boy of mine. I want to thank anyone / everyone that takes the time to read this very long post. Any and all advise will be appreciated and will be considered.

Veterinary specialists are vets who have chosen to follow a specific path after licensing instead of general practice. They are almost always board certified or in the process while working with those who are.

They work at vet schools, veterinary specialty or referral centers, and some even have private practices.


I understand vet loyalty and not wanting to step on toes by going elsewhere, but a good vet would never be offended by a client seeking a specialist.

Matese, hello there. I am going to offer my own advice, which is going to be right in line with Wylies Mom, LadyJane, 107Barney, kyc, and a whole host of others.

We are all long time dog owners, at least one of us is a breeder, and many of us have had dogs that have been sick, some with some unusual conditions.

First be advised that seeing a vet specialist whether that be at a teaching hospital, an emergency clinic, or just a specialty hospital, your specialist and your personal vet, will be working closely together. That has been my experience in over 30 yrs of owning dogs, all kinds of dogs.

What I see here, and what many others do, is a dog that has not successfully been treated for his colitis (if indeed it is colitis), that he continues to have bloody diarrehea, and sometimes mucousy stools.

I have no idea if your vet is footing the medical care for your dog, but in my opinion that is a moot point. Your dog needs to see a specialist. And I don't care about the size of the animal either. If my 120 lb large male went 4months with the same condition, (which he wouldn't) not without extensive testing and specialist advice, that would be as concerning for me than if he weighed the 6.5 lbs my Yorkie does.

A point has been made, which I will stress again, that dogs hide their pain. If your dog went limping around for 4 months and after 3 vet visits and medication to "cure" him, would you not want to at least inquire as to is it "time" yet to see a specialist?

None of us can comment on the "excellence of your vet", but we can share and comment on our own experience with many different general vets. Every single general vet I have used over the years, has always either recommended a specialist, or if I asked them; "if it was time to seek expert counsel", the answer was usually yes. General vets recognize that many many owners are reluctant to spend the extra $$ a specialist will charge, and IMHO, sometimes err on the side of delaying that recommendation.

What many of us feel is, that it is certainly time, if not past time, to seek expert counsel.

And I suspect there is a part of you that also feels that way, and is one of the underlying reasons for your thread.

Whilst I doubt any new reader who came here looking for info on colitis, could stand reading through all the confusion, I feel that it is important that new readers, should at least take away, that unsuccessfull treatment that lasts as long as 4 months, is a prime reason to secure expert counsel; ie a specialist.

yes you are CLOSE,,,,,, he is not "just living with me because a home environment is better than a hospital environment for healing". He is my dog, I made a comment on another post that I FEARED would be misunderstood, I think that is why you are thinking he is "just living with me" but yes, I was to have adopted a healthy dog, yes, when we discovered the dog was sick my vet stepped up to make him well and yes is not charging me (had it been discovered before he was adopted that he was sick they would not have adopted him out, they would have kept him, treated him, cured him, then put him up for adoption, so here's how this went, the rescue team picked him up on a Monday as a surrender, took him to my vet, as my vet was holding him to check his teeth she said to her tech "this is Joan _____ 's dog, get her on the phone, My vet called me, said she has my dog, I asked what she was talking about, she said a male 2 y/o yorkie was just surrendered, something about him reminds me of matese (my lil girl that I had to have put down 6 weeks earlier) I asked what that was, she said his ears (my Matese had the biggest most beautiful ears ever) I told her I did not want a male dog because of the marking issue, she said he was neutered some mark, some don't. She said just come and see the dog. (They were having an adoption week end, that Sat, he was going to be showed for adoption she wanted me to have this dog) Because I knew I would never own a male dog and to appease her I went the next day (reason for the next day was they called me at 5PM, I have night blindness can't drive at night) , so I went, I saw, he came home with me, he is MINE). So I guess you can say she is in charge of his health care (although I don't like the terminology "in charge of") she is treating him. Again he is NOT "just living with me because a home environment is better than a hospital environment for healing". He is in his FOREVER HOME with me, and yes, when he is cured of this one issue I will be financially responsibility for all other medical issues that come up. NOT like as in Your dog, he IS MY DOG. not meaning to sound "snide" I know it's a bit confusing when you have to hop from page to page, but do you understand now?
