| New member intro Hi my name is Shirley and have just joined this forum. I live in Yorkshire, UK with my hubby and 3 dogs. Lucy (aka Lou Lou) almost 3yr old 7kg Yorkie Teapot Sophie & Missy 6 year old Irish Red Setters Lucy is the top dog of our trio and keeps the other girls in check. She also has been a godsend when one of our setters had gastric torsion and bloat. She alerted us by barking at Sophie when Sophie was out in the garden wretching. She is not a 'yappy' yorkie which I think is due to being brought up with my other big girls. She is always carrying her toys about and has them deposited in every room. Her only bad habit is barking like mad when I have the window wipers on in my motorhome. I am a retired paediatric nurse but help out running my hubby's medical practice from home. Lucy is the dark coated yorkie on the right. Shirl |

| Hi and welcome to yt, bloat is a scarey thing to happen, thank god For smart little Lucy , I worry about bloat as I have a gsd and they are prone to that, had Sophie just been fed ? Or running about? So I know what not to do and look for , thanks..

She had been fed a few hours prior...Firstly she became unsettled and started to wretch....That's when Lucy started to bark at her...With a very short time I noticed her abdomen swelling...I phoned my vet whose practice is very near and took her down to his surgery where she was operated on right away. Her stomach had twisted at both ends...He did not do a gastropexy as he said he had never had a dog that this had recurred. I was a bit concerned as the consensus of opinion is that a gastropexy ( suturing the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent flipping over of the stomach). Unfortunately this recurred a further two times ( 3 times in the space of 8 months) She had a gastropexy done the second time but on the 3rd time the gastropexy had come away from the abdominal wall, therefore it was re done. She is almost a year since her last torsion but still sometimes bloats but no torsion. I had her investigated at Edinburgh's Dick Veterinary hospital and it was found that she has delay in stomach emptying. She does swallow a lot of air too which is impossible to prevent but if her stomach bloats I give her simeticone (I tablet of Deflatine). It still is a worry as its the main dog emergency apart from trauma. Shirl | |
