| Question about collars, harnesses leashes A question:can a Yorkie safely wear a collar? and how do u get him used to it-or a harness. When that is accomplished-how do u get him used to a leash? When I take him Kuzco out for potty training he is beginning to stray.I don't want him hurt and for potty training i have to keep him on task. Seems like collars and leashes is the first step? Thx! |

| I wouldn't use a collar. I would use a harness. I like the choke free harness from Lil Sis here on YT. or the Buddy belt from Maximo. Both are really good harnesses. I don't put collars on my girls since I heard there was a connection to CT. I would contact one of the ladies above. Neither one of my girls needed to get used to a harness so I can't help you with that one. . I will post a picture in a few.

| I would use a harness, and as far as getting your puppy use to a leash, I put the leash on her inside and let her drag it around the house. At first she wouldn't move but after a few minutes she was ok. I did this a few times and then we went outside and let her use it to go potty. |

| There are aome diferences in opinions when it comes to collars. One thing is certain, we all agree there is a connection between collars and collapsed trachea in this breed. However, some of us use collars for ID purposes only, and a harness is used for attaching the leash when walking. I honestly use two kinds of collars: 1-kitten breakaway collars when at home, and that includes being home alone. 2-buddy belt buckle collar on special occasions when supervised by me. I've read here on YT how many pets were returned home when escaping because the people who found them called the number on their tags. I myself returned a black lab to her house after she escaped while her family was at Disneyland. I just called the number on her tags. it really makes me feel a little safer to have tags on him even though he's microchipped. Oh, and the breakaway ones are really secure. They only breakaway if he were to get caught on something, which knowing Kaji, he'd freak out and hurt himself. Anyway, that's my 2 cents on the whole collar thing. And I do second recommending Maximo for getting buddy belts. She's a doll and helps with getting the right size. They're pretty pricey and fit is the key to using them properly. We love our buddy belts!! I already have 4 for my one single pup. As far as how to get them use to walking.... I honestly don't remember. It just kinda happened. I put the harness on him with a leash and walked him. Over time, he got use to it. Sorry! I'm no help there!

| I myself would never put a collar on Gizmo, as its very dangerous for yorkies, they have very small fragile tracheas and a collar can cause it to collapse if any pressure is put on their neck from it. I myself got Gizmo microchipped, and I also have a small tag that I put on the loop of the buddy belt, with my phone number to contact. I got the tag engraved at petco and its one of the smaller tags for cats. Here is a thread of one story that may have you think twice, this just recently happened http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...xperience.html . I have heard good things about the harnesses from lil sis , as well as the buddy belts. I myself went with the buddy belts and love them, I want them all :-) I got mine from Maximo's site, all except one they were out of that I really wanted, so I ordered that one somewhere else, but they are wonderful. I too let gizmo drag his leash around the house while I watched him, before walking him, and he acted like he did not even have anything on and walked perfect :-) I would be careful of the advertised choke free harnesses on amazon, as I had been looking on there as well, before learning here what they should really look like, and most that I seen on amazon listed as choke free, were pretty much just regular harnesses. One awesome thing with the buddy belts too, is they just came out with the buddy belt 2, which is much better priced, just not made with the super nice leather the others are, but they are made exactly the same as far as function :-) another thing that made me choose the buddy belts, is they had five adjustment holes where the other one was just one size, and Gizmo is a growing pup. I have all size 2 for Gizmo but he's on the last hole, so I'm gonna need to buy some size 3 I think :-) once he's full grown i plan on buying the choke free harness from Lil Sis to try them out as well :-) they both have amazing feedback and I would feel safe with either of the 2 that you can get from the members stores on here. Oh one more thing, I actually bought one of the choke free harnesses from amazon when I first got Gizmo almost 5 months ago, and he hated it. He would act like he was going to kill himself trying to get it off. I gave it to my daughter who also has a small Maltese mix, and he did the same thing. I gave her one of my buddy belts for Dash and he also immediately walked perfect with it. |

| I do not think a collar should ever be sued with a leash but I think it is extremely important for a dog to have a collar with id tags on because these little guys are great at darting out the door and away from you. Also the ASPCA says most of the lost dogs they find don't have collars with tags on and if they did they could get your dog back to you faster. With a puppy I make sure to put the collar on tight enough they can not get it in there mouth and only when you are around. With my 6 year old girl though she is very used to a collar so I put it lose enough where if she ever got caught on something she could slip it off. Callie got used to her harness pretty fast but I only put it on when we are going to be using the leash so she was always to busy with what we where doing to worry about the harness. We love the buddy belt harnesses. I would never let any dog or puppy outside with out a leash unless they are in a fenced in yard because so much can happen and dog and puppies can be so unpredictable.

| Honestly, it was never something I had to train Jackson with. He just... got used to it very quickly. He wears a collar every day. Walked on a harness. Quick potty breaks at night are on a slip collar, it's just faster for me. He's 17lbs though. I have kind of an addiction, so he has like 20 collars and multiple harnesses, LOL...
