| I use the chip. Since nothing other than an honest person willing to return a dog they have found or taking it to a vet to have it scanned, there are no sure bets with either procedure. I just dont like the thought of having letters and numbers on my yorkie's bodys. |

| I prefer tattoo. I like that they are visible. Especially when I must leave my dogs with caretakers i.e. hubby or adult children or even hired help. They will not scan a dog but will flip them over and double check a tatoo on the belly for kennel cage purposes or meds or special diets. I leave written instructions attached to their individual kennel cages. Tatoos work best for us otherwise dogs with "special needs" would have to been kenneled the whole time I am not at home. Tatoos on the belly will not have hair grow over them. I have a professional tatoo gun exactly like a human tatoo parlor. It has been specially calibrated for canine skin. It is NOT painful to tatoo at all. some dogs do not like the vibration of the tatoo gun and will fuss about it. Those I let my vet do those when they go for teeth cleaning. But most puppies do not fuss very much at all. They only do not like being held still but the actual tatooing is not painful to them. I have found puppies must be over 8 weeks because their skin needs to be mature enough to tattoo. And they best be under 12 weeks so they do not fight very hard against being held still. Tatoos can be registured with national registeries same as microchips. And last week when I registered some dogs online with AKC there was a blank which asked for the tatoo and/or also the microchip. So I presume the AKC certificate will also have my dogs tatoo # printed on it. Neat huh! To someone who ask. AKC requires breeding dogs be idenitifed at all times. Identification can be either tatoo or microchip or collar with ID tag. And to the other comment about altering tatoos. Yes this can be done. And tattooed ears can be cut off. And microchips can be removed if someone is determined to do so. Nothing is fail safe when it comes to our animals if they are lost. We are at the mercy of the "finder" of our pet. I believe the biggest aid to recovery of a pet is a LARGE cash reward! I have known of several dogs recovered because of huge cash rewards. Oh and as for proof of tatoo. My vet has a record of all tatoos with the dogs record. And I keep a copy of their AKC registration WITH tatoo number in my automobile at all times. Also I keep their shot record with rabies tag. It's a small book and not very much trouble at all considering it some day may save one of my Yorkies. So for me tatoos work best. |
