YT Addict | Therapy Dog? Has anyone used their Yorkie as a therapy dog? I would really love to get Ellie into it because I think she would be perfect for it. She is just so sweet and loving and she never meets any strangers. I am not even sure how to begin though, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

| what type of therapy dog, if you mean visiting nursing home and stuff each area is different. I take Lola to one near my house and they are very easy going. I went in for an orientation as a general volunteer and brought Lola's vet records and now I take her in whenever I want. I used to be part of a group that visited when I had a different yorkie, to be part of that group, they did some tests to see if he was aggressive. I have also read where other people have had their dogs certified. If I was you I would call the places that you would like to take her to and ask them what they require.

| Just from things I've read, I think if you check with places that offer obedience classes, some places also offer training or something that helps you get certified. Not places like petsmart but more high end places. Wasn't there a member who recently got her 2nd furbie certified to be a therapy dog? I can't remember who it was but there was another member who was kind enough to share her story. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...dy-mr-bob.html Maybe she can point you in the right direction? |

For those that have had dogs certified to go to nursing homes what type of training have your dogs gotten? When Lola and I visit I can't imagine that any type of training would have been necessary other than good behavior and a dog that does not bite or growl. The group that I was in was most concerned with a dogs temperament they would do things like tug the dogs tail, pick it up, pet it from behind suddenly, or take a toy out of the dog's mouth. They did all this to see how a dog would react, if it bit, nipped or growled they felt it would not be a good dog to take to nursing home. Lola is not the best trained when it comes to sit, stay or come, unless LOL she knows a treat is involved. However none of that comes into play during out visits, by nature not by training she does not bite or growl and that is what is important to the old people.

YT Addict | Oh good! I was a little worried about having "formal training". Just like you said the only wime Ellie is super great and sit and stay is when she knows there is food. Other than that I have never had her to bark or growl at anyone except for a little boy who scared her really bad. She really does have on of the sweetest personalities. Thanks for all your help! |
