Grrrr.....this jus.t happened to me. A lady said she's big for a Yorkie. Lol. Bella is 6 mon old and weighs 5.5lbs. |
Personally, I hate the weight issue! I get "I want a teacup" all the time.. After explaining numerous times about teacups.. I also have to explain that healthy breeding creates more weight in structure, not necessarily size. Some are terrified of 4-6 lbs adult.. Geesh they are only 6-8 inches tall at the shoulder! |

In think we all agree that weight is a huge issue with yorkies, either people think too big or too small. We love our babies of size. I feel as if I am not the only protective momma out there. I feel so proud to have my baby groomed and ready to go out, then to have weight comments just drives me crazy. |

There is hope yet! I was walking my two teapots (9 1nd 10 pounds) and ran into a lady with an even bigger yorkie (15 pounds maybe) and she said "oh your yorkies are so small, are they puppies?" Made me laugh and think there is hope yet for people not only accepting and wanting bigger yorkies but maybe not even knowing about teenies :D |
I think 7 lbs is a good healthy weight. My Jewels is 7 1/2 lbs and I cant imagine anyone thinking shes big. Shes smaller than my cats. Now I have a 14 lb one and he is big looking for a yorkie but we love his size he fits into our outdoorsy lifestyle |
I feel like my post has allowed venting for many! Being here we all learn about the breed and have become knowledgable concerning weight and I guess we should not hold it against those wh truly don't know. They are all cute from the teeny tiny to the plump and perfect! |
I can't remember if we ever weighed our first yorkie Scamp who was our family dog between 1980 - 1996 (I was only 12 when he came home to us) but he was a bigger one - about the size of a Jack Russell :) I just weighed our cat George earlier this afternoon as his quarterly worming is due and he weighs 12lb 3oz :) I jokingly said to hubby Neil that's probably heavier than THREE yorkie puppies :D Neil said ''No, you're only allowed ONE pup!'' It'll be interesting when I get my girl, and as she grows, to see whether I get the sort of comments you guys in the US seem to get a lot of  If ANYONE dares make a comment about teacups I'll soon put them right!!!!! ;) :D I'll politely educate them then send them here!!! :p |
LOL, I hear it all the time and to be honest, it doesn't bother me. He IS big for a yorkie. Very big. Almost 18lbs and shaped more like a Border Terrier or a JRT. I really love his size, personally, so if people don't like it well... whatevz. ;) To be honest I usually get compliments though. Like "Oh I know so-and-so has one and I feel like I can break it! I like his size, more sturdy". I usually get the "Is he a ..... Yorkie?" question, and I just reply yes. Some think he has to be mixed with something, but he doesn't look like anything else (well, besides a Silky, which is so closely related, so yeah). I will sometimes say "Well he might be a Silky Terrier, but he was sold to me as a Yorkie". It's just hard to explain to people. But he's not mixed with anything else. He's just big. |
I always hate that because no one would ever say wow that person is big for a human. Ya know? |
