YorkieTalk Newbie! | Potty training help!!! Hello, I just adopted my first Yorkie Friday. She's 9 weeks old and her name is roxy. I am crate training her because I work 8 hour shifts and my cat is not a fan of her right now. She's very laid back and a lover. We are potty trainig her and shes been good, she wakes me up when she has to go outside. But, she only poops inside. I take her out all the time and she goes right away, then i walk her around to try to get her to poop. As soon as we walk inside she poops. Any tips on potty training? |

| Hi, welcome to YT. I'm glad to hear that you're protecting your baby with the crate but I do think that 8 hours is too long to leave a 9 week old puppy. You'd be better off purchasing a small exercise pen (24x24). You can put it in your bedroom or bathroom & close the door to keep the cat out. (Temporarily move the litter box if you have to -- Cats are so easy!) Leave tv or radio & light on. You can put a bed, water and toys in the pen too. Put pads completly covering the inside of the pen. When you begin active training, you can remove the pads slowly and your baby will probably only head for the remaining pad. Also, puppy-proof the room just in case the little bugger figures out how to get out of the pen! It takes a bit of time. To train, you have to monitor what she eats. What goes in, must come out. No graze feeding or snacks. You have to learn what her schedule is. Some dogs have to go 15 - 20 minutes after eating. My Lucy waits an hour. You really have to dedicate time to this process. I would suggest, if possible, that you hire a pet walker/sitter temporarily while your baby is very young. That way, she can get some afternoon relief too. Is there any way you can return home on a lunch hour? That would be great. Hope this helps. Good luck Last edited by luvlee; 07-23-2013 at 09:47 AM. |

| ^^ I agree, 9 weeks old is too young to leave a pup crated for 8+ hours a day without access to potty. I would go with the small room or xpen and a washable piddle pad. If you use a bathroom, make sure the toilet lid is down and the room is puppy proofed.

| Oreo is 11 weeks old and he is still learning that puppy pad is where is supposed to go potty. I live in an apartment and just like the person above, I work all day and keep in a pretty nice size pen so he can use the puppy pads when he needs to, but I am able to come home for lunch to spend time with him. I have placed puppy pads around my apartment so when I'm home he can be out and about. Are there any techniques I can use to get him to go on the pad and have him understand that this is his spot. |

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I would suggest seeing if you can some home on your lunch break or having someone a trusting friend or neighbor who can go in a let her out to do her business during the day. I have lots of tips on potty training, cage training and more on my web site. You will find the link below in my signature.
