| Benadryl for my Mya I have a 4 1/2 old Yorkie, she is about 6-7 lbs (she likes to eat hehe) and she's been on and off with a skin irritation. It use to be just underneath around her belly, but in the last few months it has spread all over. It's mostly just super dry, flaky skin, but because she can get to it, she's scratches some areas to the point they're red and irritated. I went to the vet a few months ago, and he put her on some anti-inflammatory meds, we changed her whole diet, and we got some topical sprays and creams. It would help a little bit but not completely. I've come to the conclusion it's seasonal allergies, because when we take her out and she's on grass it beces worse. I just bought Children's Benadryl and was wondering how much I should give her, and for how long? If anyone else has gone through the same with their Yorkie, id love to hear about other options as well. Hope someone can help. Thank you. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and WELCOME ! Allergies in dogs is tough - I feel your pain. Benadryl is an 'okay' med, but it's not great bc you have to give it 3-4x a day bc it doesn't last long. Instead, most Vet Dermatologists recommend either Zyrtec or Claritin bc you only have to dose once a day. Since she is so symptomatic, you actually may want to try Temaril-P instead - it is a prescription and contains both a steroid (helps w/ inflammation/symptoms) and an antihistamine. If she is fairly miserable, I'd go with this stronger med. If her allergies are nearly year round, then I'd go with Atopica.

Benadryl dosage is 1mg per lb of dog. So 6-7 mg for your pup, every 8 hours.

| Hello and welcome to YT! I hope your pup gets better. Alleries can make them miserable, just like humans. If she doesn't get any better, go back and tell the vet exactly what's going on. Also check the grooming section. There's a few threads that give some great advice on what to use on our pups when they have dry skin. You can do a search for those threads too, or ask about it if you can't find them. Hope you like our site, and I'm glad you found us!
