We just moved to West Palm Beach FL near a swamp/game preserve and with all this rain I have noticed a lot of big ugly frogs out at night. I called a nearby vet and she said they are Bofu frogs and if they come in contact with my Twinkie they can slime him and I should get him to a vet right away so I got an emergency # from her for a 24 hr place close to us. Does anyone have any ideas about this or what my first response should be if this happens? I have a huge frog phobia and now it's worse!

oh my not sure...i mean i would try and avoid contact at all costs but maybe google and see if there is a repliant or something you can do to keep them out of your yard. best of luck.

I found that one too and it scared me to death, lol
Just wondering if anyone has a personal experience. Sometimes those are much different than what you find online. I actually just bought him a small fabric muzzle just for nighttime walks. I hope he can get used to it. If it saves his life it's well worth it! I tried getting him to go on pee pads on the balcony but he's trained to go outside and that's all he will do, even if I put puppy spray or grass from around here with other dog smells on it.

I would use a muzzle it will keep him safe. I have bullfrogs they are harmless

Ziva grabbed a frog/toad when she was young, she was not yet good at "drop it". She got slimed and foamed at the mouth. We grabbed a hose and started flushing her mouth with water. It all happened so fast there would have been no way to get her in the car and 6 miles to the vet if she was going to have a bad reaction . I do remember she was pretty shaky and sick afterwards.
I now clean out all the leaves and stuff in the corners of the yard regularly.

I have buffo toads also, I have had friends who lost their dog because they bit a toad. Please be careful

Ugh, Bufo frogs. Hello, neighbor. I'm in Boynton Beach. The first thing to do if you feel your dog has come in contact with this particular frog is to wash their mouth out completely with water, making sure the frog toxin is being washed out of the mouth instead of in the mouth. I thought Max may have come in contact with a frog the other day because I saw him adjacent to one and then he was making crazy motions with his mouth! I quickly ran him over to the sing and washed his mouth out. It wasn't a pretty sight.

I do believe you have to act immediately. You must wash the dog's mouth out before going to a vet. Also, learn to recognize what a Bufo frog looks like. They are pretty big. They do not have webbed feet like a regular frog, but they have 3 digits on their hand(?) that are separate from each other. Here's some more info:

Step 1) DO NOT PANIC!!! You need to be able to think clearly and act
quickly to help save your pet. Panicking will only keep you from acting
properly!

Step 2) IMMEDIATELY rinse the dog’s mouth out with a large amount
of water using either a hose, kitchen sink sprayer, shower sprayer or
water bottle. Rinse the mouth from side to side. DO NOT DROWN
THE ANIMAL BY FORCING WATER DOWN ITS THROAT. The
toxin is very sticky and may need to be gently rubbed off of the mucus
membranes of the mouth. Be very careful so as not to get bit by your
pet. Even the gentlest animal may bite if it is scared, in pain or having a
seizure.

Step 3) Calmly transport the dog to your veterinarian for further care.
PLAN AHEAD! Save time in an emergency by preparing now. Keep the
phone number of your veterinarian by the telephone. Since most
poisonings occur at night CALL FIRST to make sure that the hospital is
open, don’t waste time driving to a closed facility. Keep the phone
number and address of a nearby emergency clinic near the phone too, in
case your regular veterinarian is not available.

Hi there!
I did call and find out where the nearest 24 hr place was and put the number in my phone. She said to wash his mouth out with a washcloth so none goes down his throat and bring him in if it happened. I also heard to give him benedryl which I have and would give him 1/4 of a pill or something like that. She also said they were a nuisance around here.....great. I also bought a small muzzle today but I have to do some alterations on it with my sewing machine so it fits right. He hates it for sure but I am hoping he will get used to it at night. Lived in FL most of my life and never seen these damn things!
