HELP!! Just got my puppy today. So I finally got Joey home. Again I have never had a dog before and I want to know if this is normal. I gave him Nutrical but he wouldn't eat it I was able to get about the size of my pinky finger nail into his mouth. The breeder had only fed him once today so that he wouldn't have an upset stomach on the ride home so when I got him I tried to feed him the food that he normally eats (Royal Canin mini puppy) but he ignored it. The breeder did give me a can of beneful wet food (3oz) in case he didn't eat his regular food and he ate a 3rd of that. As soon as he smelled it he gobbled it up and he's drinking water. Should I give him more nutrical? So far hes really quiet and just rolls up and lays down next to me. What behavior should I look out for? Thanks in advanced for any advice. |
1st, congrats on the new puppy. Nutrical is basically sugar and is good to treat hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. It can also increase appetite, but it does this by creating a elevated glucose, then when the pup makes insulin to treat the elevated glucose, he (in theory) eats something to get his glucose back up as the increased insulin levels decrease the glucose. If you give pup nutracal and don't follow it with some protein, it will do more harm than good. The name is misleading. It isn't really nutritious in that it can be used as a substitute for food...it can't. Please use it in sparing amounts and follow with some kibble or canned food. Good luck with Joey, and this site is full of folks that can answer your questions, although it is not a substitute for your vet in the case of an emergency. Please review the stickies about when to seek emergency care. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...-articles.html Welcome to YT! :) |

Beneful is said to have cause death and cancer in some dogs so I would not feed that. Not to mention Purina was the owners of the waggin train chicken jerky that kill many dogs for many years until they finally pulled it. I would leave his dry food out all day so he can eat on it whenever he is hungry. If he doesn't seem to want to eat it soak it in some hot water to let it soften then drain it and see if he will eat it then. If you give him the nutrical you need to back it up with a protein like his dog food or he could just crash. I would only give nutrical if he was showing symptoms on hypoglycemia. How old is he? Don't forget to get him to the vet within the next 3 days to get a check up (this should always be done even if you are getting a pup from the best breeder ever). |

Congratulations on your new puppy. Usually a young pup is full of energy but you did not say how old your little one actually is. IF this is a very young pup (6 to 12 weeks of age) it could very well be missing it's littler mates and not adjusting well. They do have bursts of energy but that energy can be used up quickly. Save your nutracal for an emergency. You may want to look into what a hypoglycemic episode looks like so you know what signs to look for. I hope you have a vet appointment scheduled for tomorrow or the next day. Make sure you take a fresh stool sample in to have it checked when you go. Beneful is a very low grade food that does have flavor enhancers in it. Last I looked at it they had also put a form of sugar in it to get dogs to like it. Maybe look for a better grade of can food if that is the only way you can get him to eat. I hope he starts perking up for you soon. |

congrats on your new pup and welcome to YT. I would get you pup into the vet just so that you can get a well pup check up. I took Pixie in the next day after I picked her up so I could make sure she was healthy. s Then I put her on wellness puppy wet and dry. I fed Pixie 4 times a day. At first she would only eat if I put the wet on my finger. I would slowly lower my fi.nger into her dish to get her to eat out of the dish. Remember your puppy is adjusting to its new home and being away from its litter mates and mommy....so lots of TLC. Sending prayers your puppy is doing better tom:) |
Congratulations on your new puppy. I agree with everyone above that he might just be adjusting to his new home. Glad to hear you have a vet appointment for a puppy wellness check. When I brought Max home, he didn't drink or eat for many hours until I discovered that he didn't like the plastic travel bowls. As soon as I offered him water in a stainless steel dish, he drank. You may try different bowls or even paper plates for the kibble. Try hand feeding a kibble at a time too. I had to play a lot of games with Max his first year. Best wishes and enjoy your puppy. |
Congrtulations on your new baby. Please be very careful with that Beneful. On another list I am on, a lady just lost her dog not too long ago from eating Beneful. It was so very sad. Please just watch this baby very carefully. |
congrats on your new baby! Be sure to write down any questions you have so you can read them to the vet and get them all answered. And remember, no question is a stupid question! Congrats again and best wishes to you both :) |
Congrats on ur new baby! Don't use the nutri cal unless he's not eating, otherwise he'll be full of energy cause of the sugar. I would free feed as well def until he's an adult or for the rest of his life like the other member mentioned. My puppy can eat whenever she wants, I think that's important esp if u own a Yorkie. Good luck :) |
If I have him sleeping next to me in his iris 4 panel playpen. I put a plastic carrier with padding as his bed, food and water bowl and a pee pad ( I plan to have him indoor potty trained) how often should I wake up to check on him since he has everything in there. Every 2 hrs? 3 or 4 hrs? Literally one ruler away from him in distance. |

You can try mixing Royal Canin Starting Mousse, it's wet food, you can just mix a little bit with dry kibble just to get him to eat a little. I also have a 9 week old and He goes crazy for this mousse, then he starts eating the kibble. It takes a couple of days for them to adjust, give him time and also dont forget Nutri-cal. |
Congratulations. Since he is so young I would make sure he is eating at least every 4 hours. They can go hypoglycemic very quickly when not eating so I would check on him at least once during the night. I would also try a better canned food to mix with his dry until he is eating better on his own. He may just need a few days to adjust. Please let us know how he's doing. |

Another concern and this might be funny but do you guys wipe your dogs after they go to the bathroom? He has pooped twice and it's liquidy which I know is normal and may also be because of the wet food I gave him but its sticking to his fur so I just wipe him after every time he uses the bathroom. I'm going to ask the vet to trim the fur around the area when I see him today. I was scared to do it because his tail blends right in. Like should I wipe his thingie when he pees lol I know it's weird put I thought it would be more hygienic lol. |
you can moisten the kibble with a bit of warm water, this may make it easier for him to chew. his stools shouldnt be runny but that could be stress of new home and also the change in food. i clean mine with baby wipes after they go and i do clean cedric's peep with a face cloth and warm water at clean up time every night. congrats on your new baby hope all goes wel iwth the vet. |

They make wipes for dogs but you can also use the unscented all natural baby wipes on a pup. You can also just stick his butt under the faucet for a partial shampoo when needed. It could be the Benefil causing the loose stool. It is some nasty stuff so it could very well have caused some digestive upset. Do you know if your pup has been wormed and when, and with what? Your vet will need to know. Take a stool sample though. It is very hard to get a specimen from a puppy at the office. Worms can also cause loose stool. Glad to hear he is perking up for you. |

my vet said to be careful about free feeding yorkies, they become disinterested in the food and won't eat. He also pointed out if you free feed and have more then one pup it is hard to know what they eat. Also free feeding makes it harder to potty train. I guess the point is do what works best for your little guy, talk to your vet and research here. As to food, most vets are not "nutritionest" and they often sell food, that does not mean the food they sell is the best. IMO look at pest best for "human" grade food.. no corn. good luck and enjoy that baby. |

I do free feed, Kudos knows when to stop eating. When we had him as a pup we free fed him so he is used to it. :p |
Me too! Congrats! Quote:
I am free feeding them Royal Canin X-Small Puppy because the kibble is very tiny and Daisy is quite small and was having trouble with the kibble the breeder sent home with them so I slowly introduced the RC and they are doing quite well on it. I also free fed my first Yorkie, Indie, who died in April, without issue, but of course it has to be what's best for the dog right? I am having problems with potty training but that is to be expected and they are still quite young so I'm not too worried yet. I always use baby wipes or pet wipes to clean dirty bums and also have the area shaved really is the only way to keep them clean. I am not used to having a little boy with a little "thingy" and trying to keep it clean. Lol. Our breeder shaved the bums for us and also trimmed the hair in Duke's "thingy" on the day we picked them up, she also showed us how to properly trim the toenails which I was keen to learn. I hope your little one is doing better today and continues to thrive. Please remember that if you are taking her to the Vet or anywhere really that you do not put her on the ground or around strange dogs since their immune systems cannot fight the nasties that can be found at the Vet or pet store or park. Bring your own towel to put on the exam table and ask the vet and the tech's to please scrub their hands before handling your baby. I am super cautious until ALL the shots have been given and I even make friends and family scrub up when they have come to meet the puppies this last week. Probably paranoid but having just lost Indie who I was lucky enough to have for almost 14 years, I cannot take any chances with these little ones, I would just die if they got sick and I could have prevented it with something as simple as washing my hands.
