Congrats on your new pup!! Vet check is good!!! I still hand feed mine at 5 1/2 mos. when I think she's not eating enough. I provide plenty of food but she doesn't like eating out of a bowl. You may have a shy puppy and it may take some time for him to get used to his new home. Adding a little warm water to dry food may help. |

Hi guys. Unfortunately Joey threw up three times this morning so I took him to the vet ASAP. He hasn't been eating no matter what I do so I didn't even know what he was throwing up. I tried dry food, dry food mixed with wet food, just wet, I hand fed him and nothing. I gave him this stuff called a/d that the vet gave him and in one day he only ate a tablespoon of that. When I took him to the vet they told me he had very low blood sugar. She put him on an IV, will give him glucose and something to help stop the nausea. I feel so terrible that I started to cry. I've had him 3 days and I already love him so much. I feel like no matter what I do I can't get him to eat. The vet told me that he will be okay but I'm just emotional thinking about it. The vet told me to leave him at the vets office for a few hours so she can monitor him and then he can most likely come back home today. If you guys could keep him in your prayers it would mean so much to me. She said he will be fine and I am ready to bust open a cookbook to make him eat anything he wants. I'm going to give him rice and chicken when he comes home to help with the loose stools and nausea. He's so little and has such a bad combination of symptoms. I'll keep you guys updated. |
Praying your little one feels better soon :hands: From what you are writing it seems the vet has it under control. Just remember, he is pretty tiny and is very young for the most part they do have sugar issues which you need to monitor by keeping him fed -even if it means opening their tiny mouth and putting something on their tongue. I think a lot of members can have excellent input on this subject, I have even read some giving the little ones baby food. Hopefully others will respond soon. Keep the faith, everything will turn out well. Bless :hands: |

When we first brought Zoey home, she adjusted pretty well. But then she started showing similar signs you're describing. It got really bad since she started vomiting blood and having bloody diarrhea... Took her to a bigger facility at the suggestion of her regular vet. The vet there did all the tests but everything came out negative. She suggested ultrasound so I made the appt right away which I ended up cancelling. After thousands of dollars in vet bills, her illness just... went away. The day before her ultrasound, she was back to normal. Like nothing ever happened. Vets had no idea what it was... "One of those unexplainable bumps on the road..." was her excact words. It was a terrifying experience and I'm sorry you have to go through it... Whatever it is your boy is going through, I hope it's nothing serious. Please keep us updated. |
Hope to hear good news soon. |

I hope your little guy feels better soon |
Ask the vet for a syringe. I used those to hand feed/ force feed mine when she skipped meals to keep her fed so she didn't get low blood sugar. It was easier than putting the food on the roof of her mouth with your finger. I had to do this off and on for 3 months. PM me if you need some suggestions. :) |
The vet checked his stool samples both yesterday and today and they were good. No parasites or anything. Apparently he's just very stubborn and he won't eat. The vet got his blood glucose level back up and were going to force feed him for at least a week and see where he goes from there (she said they brought out all tyeps of food and he wouldnt eat anything even though he had not eaten all day). I'm basically going to use a syringe and use wet food mixed with a little water and feed him a little bit at a time. She said the vomiting could have been from the low glucose level but they gave him nausea medication so he shouldn't throw up again. As for his soft stools he got medicine for that and should be normal in a day or two. Basically she said he's a really stubborn little guy so he should be fed a tiny bit every few hours to get the calories and energy that he needs. I'm just going to keep a close eye in him but he should be okay. Thank you for everyone's advice you guys have kept me calm through all this. I honestly cried when I had to leave him at the vet I was so scared for him but he's going to be okay. |
Aww :( praying for your little guy. I hope he gets through this soon. |
Gerber baby food, chicken or lamb....it is bland and most of the babies love it and eat it easily. You are going to probably need to either let him lick it off your finger tip or feed him little squirts in his mouth with a syringe you can get from the vet. NEXT!! You need to contact the breeder you got this baby from. She needs to be told you are having a terrible time trying to get the baby to eat, and you are having hypoglycemia issues....she let this baby go home to someone that is totally inexperienced with puppies, this puppy is too young to be leaving his momma, he should be with momma until at least 12 weeks of age, ESPECIALLY since you are having eating/hypoglycemia issues. She should be ASHAMED of herself putting YOU in this situation, and abandoning this baby, which is HER "creation" when she bred the sire and dam!!!! If I were you, I would get the Gerber baby food...I would syringe feed that baby if he wont take it off your fingertip or off a flat surface like a little dish....and I would get goats milk, warm a little up and put that in a shallow dish for him to lap up...he is just now at the age where momma is beginning to wean him...he doesnt know how to lap stuff up...YOU ARE HIS MOMMA NOW, so you are going to have to teach him how to lick that baby food off something and how to lick up that goats milk...this is something you are going to have to do like every 3 or 4 hours, in order to keep him hydrated and fed.....It will be labor intensive to start with, but he will catch on and learn what to do.... give him about 1/2 inch of NutriCal on the roof of his mouth every 4 hours during the day and the last thing you do at night before he goes to sleep...this is important, so you dont wake up to an unconscious baby from low blood sugar in the morning....I wish I could get ahold of that bree.....never mind!!!! |

You don't even want to know about what the breeder did with Joey and his vaccines. I might have rushed into getting him even though I wasn't crazy about the breeder because it was love at first sight. I may not be experienced but I have read almost every puppy book that I can get my hands on and I'm also very patient. I love this little guy. He's already peed on me once and pooped on the floor a couple of times and I just put him in his playpen, clean up the mess and play with him again. I will definitely do what I can so that he is healthy and happy, It's great to have a support system like you guys though. :D |

Baby food works wonders, just be sure to microwave it for a few seconds. Also, idk if you've tried some chicken yet but I would give that a try too. Hopefully ur baby eats something |

Just now reading this thread. I have not been in your situation. But I am praying for your baby boy and you. You are being an awesome mom! Hang in there!! :) |
I like using the baby food because there is no chewing involved....baby can just lick it up, which is a big step in weaning, as opposed to sucking. If the baby food is room temp, like when you first open the jar, you dont need to microwave it...if it is cold, and you do microwave it, make absolutely certain you stir it with your finger to detect any "hot spots", which heating in a microwave can cause. |
Very scary stuff for a first time Mom, OMG I am so sorry you had to go through that. I am new to the forum also though not a new Yorkie owner, and I am so grateful for this forum and the people here that are always available with help and advice and encouragement. I sincerely hope your baby is doing much better now. I also have young ones and it is so crazy how quickly you would do anything to help them right? I too was love at first site times 2!!!! They are almost 11 weeks old now. Please continue to update us with your progress, I will be thinking about you and praying he gets over this bump quickly. Karen Daisy n Duke.:animal-pa |

Update So every 4 hours I've been giving him some wet food in a syringe (this stuff called a/d that the vet recommended) I also give him a tiny bit of Nutrical and there is a defenet improvement. He was way more alert today sniffing around the house and he chased a ball today as I threw it around (though I only let him play for 5 minutes because of all that he's been through). He mostly sleeps but I can see he is feeling better. Hopefully things go up from here. I want to start introducing wet food this weekend and all I have at home are different bags of dry food. Apart from baby food any brands you guys recommend? The a/d is good for puppies with diarrhea but I don't think that its as nutritious and tasty as it could be. He is really feisty when I try to open his mouth he tries to shut it super tight lol but I'm keeping up with the feedings no matter how messy things get. BTW is 1 pound 6 ounces a normal weight for his age? He will be ten weeks tomorrow. |

New baby First, congratulations on your new baby. Welcome to the picky Yorkie club! You have done everything to try and make him eat and have him checked out by the vet. You are a great momma, and he will be fine. He is young and new to you and your home and that will be stressful for him. I have found that it is quite common to have eating issues at first and that one has to go to great lengths to get them to eat. You will see on threads here how many of us with older dogs have eating problems with picky or sensitive dogs. You are not alone! To get his strength up the Gerbers baby chicken and gravy is bland and nutritious, and perhaps he will eat good quality kibble mixed with it soon? If he is eating the a/d wet food that is a good start. As for a good food, there are so many varieties to choose from. The rule is to keep away from bad foods like Beneful and other supermarket foods. On the Food and Diet section here you will find high quality food suggestions that work for members. Good Luck, you are doing the right things, and he will come around and take food normally soon. Hang in there! Hope he continues to improve and settles into his new home soon. |
1 Attachment(s) Just thought I would share this picture. Also when one of the bowls is empty he would stick his head in it and fall asleep. Lol. Attachment 386695 |
