HELP!! Just got my puppy today.
 
So I finally got Joey home. Again I have never had a dog before and I want to know if this is normal.

I gave him Nutrical but he wouldn't eat it I was able to get about the size of my pinky finger nail into his mouth. The breeder had only fed him once today so that he wouldn't have an upset stomach on the ride home so when I got him I tried to feed him the food that he normally eats (Royal Canin mini puppy) but he ignored it. The breeder did give me a can of beneful wet food (3oz) in case he didn't eat his regular food and he ate a 3rd of that. As soon as he smelled it he gobbled it up and he's drinking water.

Should I give him more nutrical?

So far hes really quiet and just rolls up and lays down next to me.

What behavior should I look out for?

1st, congrats on the new puppy. Nutrical is basically sugar and is good to treat hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. It can also increase appetite, but it does this by creating a elevated glucose, then when the pup makes insulin to treat the elevated glucose, he (in theory) eats something to get his glucose back up as the increased insulin levels decrease the glucose. If you give pup nutracal and don't follow it with some protein, it will do more harm than good. The name is misleading. It isn't really nutritious in that it can be used as a substitute for food...it can't. Please use it in sparing amounts and follow with some kibble or canned food. It sounds like he ate enough to make it through the night okay, but keep food and water available in case he wants to eat or drink more. Then try to get him in to his first vet appointment ASAP--tomorrow if possible. If he's perkier in the morning, happy and eating, I wouldn't worry so much, but if he is still lethargic, then take him in on an emergency basis, just in case.

Beneful is said to have cause death and cancer in some dogs so I would not feed that. Not to mention Purina was the owners of the waggin train chicken jerky that kill many dogs for many years until they finally pulled it. I would leave his dry food out all day so he can eat on it whenever he is hungry. If he doesn't seem to want to eat it soak it in some hot water to let it soften then drain it and see if he will eat it then. If you give him the nutrical you need to back it up with a protein like his dog food or he could just crash. I would only give nutrical if he was showing symptoms on hypoglycemia. How old is he? Don't forget to get him to the vet within the next 3 days to get a check up (this should always be done even if you are getting a pup from the best breeder ever).

I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon with the vet. I don't like beneful either but it was freaking me out that he wouldn't eat anything I guess I will free feed for the first few days.

Congratulations on your new puppy. Usually a young pup is full of energy but you did not say how old your little one actually is. IF this is a very young pup (6 to 12 weeks of age) it could very well be missing it's littler mates and not adjusting well. They do have bursts of energy but that energy can be used up quickly. Save your nutracal for an emergency. You may want to look into what a hypoglycemic episode looks like so you know what signs to look for.

I hope you have a vet appointment scheduled for tomorrow or the next day. Make sure you take a fresh stool sample in to have it checked when you go.

He's 9 weeks old. And I don't plan to feed beneful I will be feeding him Royal Canin Mini Puppy.

I would free feed until his an adult if not his whole life.

Yikes he should still be with his mommy until 12 weeks. Make sure you don't leave him alone for a few weeks for any more then an hour. His sugar level needs to be watch really closely sense he is so young.

congrats on your new pup and welcome to YT. I would get you pup into the vet just so that you can get a well pup check up. I took Pixie in the next day after I picked her up so I could make sure she was healthy.

Then I put her on wellness puppy wet and dry. I fed Pixie 4 times a day. At first she would only eat if I put the wet on my finger. I would slowly lower my fi.nger into her dish to get her to eat out of the dish.

Remember your puppy is adjusting to its new home and being away from its litter mates and mommy....so lots of TLC.

Congratulations on your new puppy. I agree with everyone above that he might just be adjusting to his new home. Glad to hear you have a vet appointment for a puppy wellness check.

When I brought Max home, he didn't drink or eat for many hours until I discovered that he didn't like the plastic travel bowls. As soon as I offered him water in a stainless steel dish, he drank. You may try different bowls or even paper plates for the kibble. Try hand feeding a kibble at a time too. I had to play a lot of games with Max his first year.

Congrtulations on your new baby. Please be very careful with that Beneful. On another list I am on, a lady just lost her dog not too long ago from eating Beneful. It was so very sad. Please just watch this baby very carefully.

congrats on your new baby! Be sure to write down any questions you have so you can read them to the vet and get them all answered. And remember, no question is a stupid question! Congrats again and best wishes to you both :)

Congrats on ur new baby! Don't use the nutri cal unless he's not eating, otherwise he'll be full of energy cause of the sugar. I would free feed as well def until he's an adult or for the rest of his life like the other member mentioned. My puppy can eat whenever she wants, I think that's important esp if u own a Yorkie.
