Ha, ha, I've heard such similar stories from Mardelin, her mentor recently passed and she loved that woman. Not sure if they make em like that anymore.

Those women are a dying breed....and they heve earned every ounce of the respect they command....not "demand", as they are not that egotistical....but when in their presence, you can palpate the love they have for this breed, and how devoted they are to keeping IT RIGHT!!!....I adore my mentor and am forever grateful to her...I would do anything for her. When Ike came thru, she was on the phone with me....thank God we still had phone service at that time....and while she was concerned about my son and I, it was the dogs she was most worried about. I loaded up my entire bunch and took them to her, while we tried to get stuff back together here, and she kept them for me until it was safe to bring them home. But she is brutal....and I adore her!

Judy you will be one like your mentor. And they are a dying kind of folk.

My training mentor, just needs to raise an eyebrow at me, and I cringe.

I would never, ever consider stretching a truth. Like, did you train with your dogs this past week? She would know the answer; from my dogs behaviour.

I do hope one day, to get it mostly right.

And one more thing to say.

These wonderfull knowledgable folks just don't coach or take on any-one.
They saw in you, something special, a spark, or a talent or passion.

And like all good breeders should be, your mentor will be there for you, come hell or high water. Nuture you when life throws a curve ball, kick you when you need to get up and moving. spur you to learn more, to become even more than what they are.

That's code for a puppy mill obviously. I was so dumb, dumb, dumb! I love Rory with all my heart, but once I became educated I was horrified knowing what I had contributed to, and I still think of what her mother's life must have been like (one of the reasons I specifically sought out a puppy mill rescue (Lane) when we wanted another pup). Rory is a bigger yorkie, floppy ears, and has PLE/suspected lymphangiectasia. She's adorable in my eyes, but far from meeting the standard. She'll be 6 in August, and those stupid Sponge Bob pictures were on the website when I got her. And in case I didn't make it clear, I was so STUPID! Ugh, I get mad at myself every time I think about it.

I'm so glad you knew better and didn't give this guy any business.
Good post, I know people who have attempted work with "Justin", some who have gotten puppies and others who walked away. Honestly I am not surprised that they stay in business, in a city the size of Atlanta you would think we would have more options to buy from good breeders (we don't have a lot in the area).

I am not sure which broker Sophie Kate is from, I know she was originally on Kiijii (sp) and I was able to track her breeder down with the help of PetshopPuppies.com.

Would I buy from someone who dressed their puppies up with cute bows and dresses? I have never really given that a lot of thought. What I would do is ask some of the YT members who breed, have experience with breeders and or will give an opinion.

My main goal when looking for a new family member is that I buying from someone who cares about the Sire, Dame and the breed. I have very little experience with breeding (okay none) and look to the experts for advice.

I bought morgan from a breeder in south Dakota/ and her kennel was very clean and did not smell or anything and we had to make a apt to pick morgan up but at 2 years old he has glaucoma in both eyes and dry eye in one eye and he has LP in both knees. So my next yorkie, I am planning to buy from green treasured yorkies

Did the vet say why he had glaucoma, does he have diabetes? Have you told you breeder about these things. So many breeders say, "No one's ever told me their dogs have problems," so they assume that their breeding dogs are putting out healthy pups. Even if your breeder won't do anything, it good to inform her.

Please as whoever you buy from in the future if she does genetic testing and ask what she tests for.

So did you also search prior to buying from this breeder the health data bases to see exactly what screening your breeder has done?

Do you know what is required to get a CHIC number, and or even what this is?

It is okay if you don't, but now is the time to research what you don't know. There are health databases out there, that reputable breeders who believe in testing, send in the specific health tests on.

Please go to www.ytca.org to see what health tests they require and recommend.

Luxating Patella is one of the health tests that Ytca actually requires prior to a CHIC number being issued.

I agree with you, but YTCA is revamping their website, it's hard to find anything right now. You can find more information about the CHIC test here:

So many breeders say No one has ever told me.... Is a cop out. We have their contact information and over at least the first three years, and even out to five years, the breeders imo should be contacting their pet owners to ask about their pups health.

Again I say, there are few genetic tests available to us. LP HD ED is not one, nor is Liver Shunt or MVD, there is Pra and Hyperuricosuria, and another bladder true genetic test.

The aforementioned tests do show if your dog is clear of LP HD ED or has a good BATS score. And imo again should be done. Along with the genetic test for PRA, but then again you still need the opthamologist to examine the eyes at least every 2 yrs or prior to breeding for cataracts or other eye diseases.

The world of health testing is not a simple one, nor a simple one for the consumer to wade through.

I personally am a outlier on the health testing, as I test for everything in the breed I breed.

But as important to the whole equation is knowing (as far as you can know) the health of the vertical and horizontal lineage.

I totally agree with you, and if the breeder isn't keeping in contact with you, she telling you volumes on how much she cares about the offspring. However, even if the breeder isn't keeping in contact, pet owners too have a responsibility to the breed that includes informing breeders of these serious problems.

I just think you are so special for all those very same reasons, Judy. I learn from you everyday, and trust your opinion explicitly.
