Another tragedy I've heard about nearby my home. I feel like the overprotective Mom of the neighborhood, but I am outraged about what happened to this dog that found a small spot in the fence "that wasn't there yesterday" and poor thing ran in front of car doing 30mph. on the street, the yelping and screaming from a block away sent me in my bare feet running, I've just finished washing the freaking blood off my hands so here I go:
Dear People,
Backyards are not safe for little dogs, doggie doors are not safe for little dogs to go in and out of either, I'm sorry they just aren't...disagree all you want but I warn you they are not safe.
Backyards are natural habitats and change daily, the fence you have up protecting your yard may be sound, but rabbits, raccoons, fox, squirrels live there too, they dig, they can and do dig holes that your small dog may just find and get out of....and die because of.
The other wildlife that can and do get in to your yards can and do harm small dogs every single freaking day and sometimes lead to death.
Passersby, birds etc., may drop something harmful in your yard and your little dog may and often do, find it and sometimes die from whatever was dropped.
Birds, hawks, crows, eagles etc., may fly over your yard and snatch one of your pups, they do it everyday and it sometimes leads to death. This happens daily too.
Trees, bushes fences poles etc., sometimes change and a sharp object is no place for your small dog to be around and they often are injured because of things like this and sometimes die. This happens daily too.
People, often times people steal, even in the country even if you live in the middle of nowhere, they steal your dog and sometimes you never see them again. Sometimes, utility people, strangers, Jehovah Witness' etc, open your gate and your pup gets out...sometimes they die. This happens daily too.
I can not for the life of me figure out why anyone would/do leave there small dogs outside alone, unattended to let tragedy strike, it often does and it happens daily.
Yes I know tragedy can strike in front of your face as well, but really why do so many gamble with their little dogs, it happens daily and it sometimes leads to death. |
:thumbup:Great post Lynzy!!!
I stand by the above, IMHO its gambling. I have seen dogs here on YT that have died for all of the reasons above, and I pulled a bloody dog and held him in my arms as he died last night, so yes I've seen it first hand.
I have had a dog die from contact with a possum, and yes I know for sure it was a possum cause my dear Hugo bit it, killed it didn't eat it. He dropped it the second I screamed. Within a couple days he was yellow like American Cheese, he died a horrible death, H O R R I B L E, death, because a neighbor had put out rat poison baits that the possum got in to and then my dog bit the possum. I have had 26 dogs (Mia2 makes it 26!) I can tell you dozens of stories of the things that have happened.
I will not change my stance on small dogs being outside unattended, I've read here and all over the things that can and do happen everyday. I do know that most of our YTers are very in tune with their pets and I also know that we all have a different way of handling things. I'm tired of seeing dead dogs here, in the news, in my life for stupid nonsensical reasons...usually owner errors....
I also have some good friends that let their little dogs out in the yard, they make it as safe as can be and most times things don't happen...but sometimes they do, and dogs die everyday because of it.
I'm not judging anyone here, my Original thread post is how I do feel, and I wish most people didn't do these things...especially the ones who have half a brain and no conscience. I don't like how it became an I'm better than you thread...
For those of you who do let your dogs out regularly:
If you can't be out with them, check on them regularly
Examine your fences and yards for anything potentially dangerous, especially after wind storms etc.
If you have a gate put a lock on it and use it all the time so others won't let them out etc.
Just be vigilant and tenacious in always making their area safe as can be, nothing is 100% safe.
For the record, my dogs never go outside without me ever, my dogs are trained to potty inside, my dogs don't go in the yard unless on a leash (cuz they are bad and I'm a bad trainer)...Mini rarely goes out cuz she is allergic to everything and should live in a plastic bubble!!!
