Finding a good vet is so hard!!! I thought I had finally found a perfect one and have had great luck with Guinness going there BUT today I asked the vet tech why Stella's file stated she was a mixed breed and was told because anytime a dog is mixed with more than one breed that is what they are called and he could tell she was not a full yorkie because she weighed 7.8lbs and her ears did not stand up!! NOW keep in mind Guinness weights 13lbs and his chart clearly states YORKSHIRE TERRIER!!!!!!!!! He then goes on to tell me that I should not be feeding them Taste of the Wild it is a bad food and that I should ONLY be feeding them Science Diet (they just so happen to sell that brand) when I mentioned that Dog Food Advisor list my food as a 5 star food and what he is trying to sell me is only a 2 1/2 star he informs me that they are just trying to get people to buy my brand.. ummm funny I get the feeling that is what YOU are doing!! I just do not get it... if you go into being a vet doesn't that mean you love animals?? NOT just money????? |
I think with dog food, It is important to do your homework and feed your baby what agrees with them and sometimes it is trial and error type of thing. I agree a lot of vets sell science diet and for some dogs it is the only choice. Some dogs do fine on it. My Daisy is on royal canine SO bc she has issues with producing crystals and a lot of dog food out there does not make the special prescription dog foods. So I don't think you have a bad vet I just think that this is one area you disagree on:) |

I can see where you are coming from! Over the years, I have had 2 other vets and I guess the 3rd one is a chime! I love our vet clinic! The staff and the vets are so wonderful. They take the time to talk, examine and just truly care for animals. I can call any time and someone will talk to me about my concerns. They are very informative and update me on new vaccines, area decease outbreaks, etc. As far as dog foods go, my vet sells different brands like your vet, but they don't push it. They actually will special order a brand for people if their pets are having skin, intestinal issues or allergies! They are so open and I totally trust them! :) |
They shouldnt be writing down she is a mixed breed when you told them shes a yorkie. I wouldnt go there for that reason also. s The food isnt any big deal vets arent really schooled on nutrition and they do prescribe the science diet rx food for sick dogs so they do probably think science diet is a good food. I dont think its a terrible food myself it just depends on what type of ingredients you want to feed your dog and everyone has their own idea of that |
The breed thing is what killed me the most. But when he stated that about the food and I mentioned where I got my info it was more the way he reacted when I asked about the info.. You would have thought I was mental ward patient that just said an alien came down from mars and told me what dog food to purchase :p if I went to my Dr and said I read that eating a certain food would help me I would hope he would either be able to give me valid reasons of why or why not and if not just tell me that he will have to research it and get back with me instead of just telling me they are trying to get me to buy that food is all.. YES I know I am just being picky and expecting way too much from my vet lol |
You should expect alot from your vet! He should have known the breed, the food, and why Stella's ears aren't up too! I expect my vet to know more than me, and I'm lucky I found a smart 1! They treat Cinders like a little princess, and tell me to keep "our" pup healthy and happy as we leave. OUR means the vet's office considers her one of their pups :) and dote all over her from the time she gets there till we leave. :) And she isn't the only Yorkie that visits them :) so that to me means alot of love is coming out of there for all animals :) I'd run away as fast as you can from that guy! |
I you dont feel right find another one. your feelings are most likely right on. Jess broke her leg and I brought her to my vet who put a cast on. 5 weeks later she tells me "It didnt work at all I think we should amputate" I almost passed out in the room and had to walk out. She looked at me like I was insane...I said "not an option find another one..she reluctantly sent me to a surgeon who was wonderful. I was told by two other vets they NEVER should have put a cast on the leg, it never would have healed that way. She is fine now..that vet? Not mine anymore.. Go with your gut!! |

Did the vet or vet tech say that Stella doesn't look like a pure breed based on weight and ears? Vet techs have no business saying anything, and I would not return to that office if it was the vet. That is ridiculous. I had a vet receptionist ask what kind of dog Max is -- Max was already an adult with full coat and topknot. When I said Yorkshire Terrier, she said Max doesn't look like one because his ears are "enormous." :( I walked in a proud mom and that hurt me terribly. |
When Mina goes to the vet,she is checked from stem to stern even if we are there for a tummy issue over stress (Tuesday last a week ago). They talk about how cute she is and hold her like she is a baby. I think you need a different vet and I would like to suggest that you go shopping NOW when you dont have a huge need. When a mom is looking for a peditrician, she interviews several before choosing one. If the Dr gets insulted because you are asking him/her a list of questions then you need to move on. I got lucky, the vet that I have now purchased the office from my last vet who retired. The older vet would make house calls,,really miss that. But my current vet is wonderful. If I go out of town and something happens to one of the animals, the kids can take pup in and I can pay when I get back in town. When Bunkey was sooo sick and then passed away I wracked up a heck of a bill and had to make payments, they never once asked me for the balance. They didnt even call me when Bunkeys ashes were back at the vets, they called my DH so I wouldnt be upset. |

The last vet that told me there is "no such thing as a biewer yorkie" and that I CLEARLY have a morkie, I left. I have been taking my animals to that clinic for 20+ years, and volunteered there when I was younger (different owners, but still) and they think I dont know what MY dog is?! I still get asked if hes a mix, but I correct that. However, you clearly have yorkies...yours are even the right colors! Dont they know ears dont always stand up?! |
At first today I thought my pegnancy hormones were just taking over and I was mad over nothing, I go in with Stella all happy just getting shots and end up feeling like somebody just thought me my child was a mutt and that I so not know how to feed her even grrr I have one other issue with this vet, Guinness was on a flea medicine with my old vet that worked GREAT!! This vet put them on Frontline Plus and I can not for the life of me keep fleas off of them now!! When I mention it I am told well maybe I am just not doing it right. Now I know I am not the smartest person in the world but how hard is it to put drops on the base of their neck pulling the fur back????? |

I agree with you. Unfortunately I live in an area with not too many choices for vet care and the "hospital" facility is really bad. I'd love to live nearby one of the big animal hospitals with a knowledgable staff and access to high tech testing etc. You should keep looking until you find a good fit. |

My pixie weighs 7.5 lbs so I guess she is a mutt too. lol maybe we should bring in a bunch of yorkies in to him and let him tell all their parents that their dogs are mutts! lol |
I know dog food is a touchy subject sometimes here but I have to say it. The manufacturers of Science Diet help fund many vet schools. They also give the schools a lot of product and other perks. The schools depend on the large manufactures of pet food to help subsidize them. When a vet goes into business these companies are there to help them with their start up and the vets depend on these companies for their RX foods. Places like Hills give the vet samples for their clients as well as start up packs, etc. Vets also get personal perks for being a good customer, just like human docs do from their drug reps. Really vets are not the best source of information about the breeds either. Many vets only deal with backyard breeders for most of their career and most of us know that there are vets that also serve the puppy mill industry. Vets study the medical aspects of many animals not proper breeding practices or even very much on nutrition. They depend on the pet food industry to do the study of what foods the animals should eat. Obviously there is a wide range of ideas in that as you can see by all the different types of diets available through various companies. I'm surprised you didn't smack that tech in the head for calling your baby a mixed breed! OK, you shouldn't smack anyone but I would have felt like crawling over the counter after him myself if he said that about my baby! And if they ever tried to tell me that feeding my dog corn and by products is better than good quality ingredients.they would have gotten a lecture longer than any professor gave them in school! |
By the way, I live in central NY. I tired Frontline Plus for my cats because they were picking up ticks in the woods and fields they frequent. Those ticks loved the stuff. I was pulling off the most well nourished ticks you eve saw! Never again! |
I am soo happy to hear I am NOT crazy :p and that I am right Frontline does not always work!! I think I am going to call my groomer tomorrow and see where she takes her three because I trust her 150% with my two so I am sure wherever she trust hers to go I would too. |
I try to take things with a grain of salt. A lot of vets are not knowledgable about breeds or nutrition. I'm not saying they all aren't, but it's really not what they're there for. I just look for a vet whom I trust and can take care of my dog when he's in need. You have to remember too that a lot of times they are dealing with very incompetent dog owners. We are the minority here at YT and other dog forums. They just want to give the safest advice and the most simple. Quote:

We love jasmin's vet.. recommended by our close friends. She is a natural pet health vet. We love that since we also like natural health for ourselves. |

Wow! Nice bedside (tableside) manner! What about breed specific problems? If you don't know the breed I think you'd be SOL! Seriously, I'd find a vet who is a bit more knowledgeable about Yorkies, really. |

One other question, I am starting to doubt the vet in all areas now!! Stella got her first round of shots with the breeder and I have the Florida health cert showing that, she got the 2nd round from this vet and then due to a tummy issue and med's they had me wait a little while and get another round with her rabies... So correct me if I am wrong but would that not be all three rounds? The vet told me no it was just the second because they did not count the shots she got at the breeder because they do not know what they were but yet I showed my Fl health cert signed by the vet clearly listing the shots!! They want me to come back in another 3 weeks to drop another $200 on what she called booster shot. Of course if that is right I have no problem paying but it just sounded odd to me the more I think about it!! |
