Yorkie or Havanese Hi everyone! I am new here and considering getting a yorkie or a havanese. I live in nyc in a condo and want a small dog and would like it if my dog is not a yapper. I want a lapdog on the mellower side. I want to train it on a pee pad as well as go on daily walks for exercise. I have met yorkies that are super loving and quiet and some the opposite. The havanese seem the same as well. I posted on the havanese site and they all said to go with the havanese so I thought I would ask the same here. Can anyone share your thoughts? |
A Yorkie Of Course !!! :D Both are very cute, there are some fact to consider. Pro's and Con's so do your research and make an informed decision. |
Yorkie |
oh ... I will say YORKIE... they are the most loving and sweet little guys! They do need compainship so you could get a havanese playmate for your new yorkie:) |
I say get a Great Dane just kidding:) I am a tad bit bias but I adore Georgie beyond words. My husband and I were just talking tonight about how he isn't a dog he is truly our child with extra fur:) So my vote goes for a Yorkie:) |
Yorkies are a lot smarter then people give them credit for. Either way please make sure you buy from a good breeder and not a puppy mill or a byb. If your interested in Yorkies besides rescues the best place to look is The Yorkshire terrier club of America there website is ytca.org. |
LOL of course a yorkie, after all this is a yorkie web site:D and also a Havanese can be a bit on the big side to go on papers, I have seen many in the 15# plus range. If you go on Facebook, check out Cuba's page, LOL he is one of the best known dogs in NYC, his dad runs the FB page Pawvogue, and helps organize tons of NYC pet events, radio shows etc. Connect with him and you will find out about all the cool NYC pet events and there are plenty, so LOL get a girl so you can dress her up when you hit the town https://www.facebook.com/Cuba.TheNYCHavanese |
also no kidding aside, females are easier than males when it comes to pee pads, my last male was good and used the papers but he peed like 3 x's what Lola does and he would dribble a bit each time he went, in fact we had a thread about boys dripping a while back. but boys are loveable, so I am not a boy hater |
It's great that you are researching breeds to get the perfect companion. I would not recommend a Yorkie to a person who wants a quiet lap dog. The only way I would get a Yorkie in that case is to adopt an adult to be assured of the personality that suits your lifestyle. Most Yorkies are active dogs. As one renowned exhibitor wrote in The Complete Yorkshire Terrier, they are lap dogs until they see something they are interested in, and then they are off like a shot. My boys love lap time and cuddling, but they need lots of exercise daily. |

Most Yorkies I meet are active, they are terriers after all, and I don't consider most to be 'lap dogs'. Even my friends yorkie, who is very mellow and doesn't require much in terms of activity and would easily lay around on the couch all day, will be the first to fly off the couch barking and yapping at any activity going on outside. Of course, you will find yorkies that fit your requirements, but the breed as a whole would not be what I'd recommend for what you want. Havanese would be a far better choice IMO. They also tend to be better with children, strangers, etc. And while they can be a very active breed as well, they tend to be more capable of chilling on your lap for days if necessary. If you are looking for something a bit smaller than the Havanese, look into Chihuahua's as well. |
Obviously a yorkie! They are the best! |
I have a yorkie and my BF a havenese. heres my two cents yorkies are smaller and can be pee pad trained havanese would be difficult to indoor train but not impossible my yorkie I picked because she was 'so mellow" according to the show breeder who said she was to timid to be a show dog was full of rubbish. As soon as this dog realized she got tons of love and affection and good food she became a barking, crazy, run around nut (not in a bad way, just totally different than the 1 year old we picked up) havanese are just more mellow..my friends dog roams the house freely..and she easily outdoor trained.. my yorkie is and cannot..although many on here have free roam of the house. I have younger children who leave things on the floor so I worry. Not to say it wouldnt be any different with a havenese/ yorkies are very loving and want alot of attention..havanese, not so much.. so its seems as though you want a little of both..lol we love our girl, she is great. if you are looking for a mellow dog I dont think yorkies are it unless you get an older one..they are both great dogs..cant go wrong.. |
Sorry definitely didn't read the part where you want a mellow non yapper lol. I just say Yorkie because well they are amazing:) Georgie is mellow and only yaps when he feels the need. My nieces Yorkie is very mellow and doesn't Yap a lot either. They are not all like that though. |
A lot of it depends on the individual dogs temperament. My 6 year old Yorkie is a rescue and she never barks. She only barks at the door bell on the tv! She is very mellow. My other Yorkie who is 5 months hasn't been too bad but she is still young. She barks at stuff that makes sense, like loud noises, thunder, playing...and even the ironing board . But I consider my 5 month Yorkie to be pretty mellow and a great lapdog. Now my sister has 2 havanese dogs. They are very yappy! The girl has a lot of anxiety and is constantly on the run barking at anything and everything. She also pees everywhere even though she's 2 years. She is good with kids though and a good lapdog. The boy...is huge! He is almost 20 pounds and is not good with strangers. He bit my dads leg :-( but he was easy to potty train. I also like the Yorkie coat better. My sisters girl havanese has very stringy hair which isn\'t the most appealing. But the boy has very curly hair! Yorkies are very very smart and they know it and will test you! I seriously feel like I\'m talking to a kid most of the time because they understand what I\'m saying. Both breeds make great small dogs but their personality will be determined with how they were bred, their temperament, and the environment in which they are raised. I live with my boyfriend in a small apartment with little noise and definitely a much calmer environment. My sister has 2 very loud kids which causes the animals to act out. Good luck! |
