Generally speaking, Yorkies require a lot of activity, physical exercise. I think back to that first year with Max - whew! Max has an even temperament, not-hyper at all, but Yorkie puppies are especially energetic. :) To the OP, if you decide you want a Yorkie, I highly recommend adopting one that is closer to a year old. My second boy was 8 months old when I brought him home and the bond I have with him is just as strong as the one I have with the boy I brought home at 13 weeks. You can adopt from a rescue or find a really good breeder who held puppies back as show potentials. Best wishes in your search for the right dog for you. |
If you are looking for a non barking dog I would not recommend either. Small lap dog , nonbarker look at bichon or pom. Bichon are easy to house train, do not require a lot of exercise. Same with a Pom. Just my opinion. |
honestly it could go either way, I have had two yappers and two quite yorkies. My first one years ago before I knew better was even debarked cause I could not stand nor train the barking out of him. I did not even live in a condo, I had a free standing house but he could still be heard outside. I am assuming you have an elevator type building with hallway entrances, that could be a real challenge since dogs tend to bark when people walk by, going out with the dog left in side could be a problem since many bark non stop till you return. I have a very light barker now, however that changes when we leave her someplace. we often overnight on our boat in different marinas, as soon as we leave the boat she starts barking and does not stop till we return, she would probably do that in an apartment condo if left alone In time some get used to it, but not all do. Also the lap dog thing could go either way. I have friends with very energetic yorkies and some with slugs that don't move much yet are not that old. LOL after thinking more about this I think you should get a cat:D:D |

Really what you should do is talk to some local rescue groups to see if they have a young adult pup that might fit your needs, there are several good groups in your area. |
My bchon was not a barker, have had 2 poms and neither were barkers. Good condo size dogs. Easy to pee pad train. Bichon was a great boat dog. She never barked, most people never knew she was there until we walked her. Keno not so much. He will not be left alone. He goes where we go. Lol he is the boss. |
Pomeranian's are definitely known as being huge barkers! Again, it's going to depend on individuals but when when someone wants a 'lap dog' Yorkie is not really what comes to mind. Unless you find an adult that you know is already like that! :) But with pups, you're taking somewhat of a gamble. I do think that in general, you can somewhat mold a puppy into what you want them to be, but certain things you won't be able to change, and that's when each breed's general descriptions and temperaments come into play... Honestly, some of the best 'lap dogs' I've ever been around have been mastiff's and great danes, LOL... Shih Tzu's are typically pretty mellow and love to cuddle, IME. Chihuahua's as well but they have a bit more 'feisty-ness' to them. But I know someone with 5 and they are always ready to go for a walk, or a hike, or an adventure, but they're always perfectly content burrowing in the blankets for 5 days if needed. From what you describe you want, yorkies or havanese wouldn't be my first suggestion. I'd look into Shih Tzu's, Chi's, Japanese Chin, Pugs, Pekinese, even look into the Tibetian Spaniel. Jackson would never allow me 5 days of laying around LOL. Granted, he's on the 'extreme' scale of activity - he really needs a lot to be totally content, but the most I can get of lounging around the house not doing much of anything is about 2 days. Then he's just *itching* to do something and he will start finding things to chew, and just being an all around pest. |
Even though Havanese are super adorable.....I have to say Yorkies! My yorkies are so loving and are lap pups! We have 3 and all three love to snuggle on our laps and 2 are puppies! They don't bark much, if at all, Tatiana is being pad trained and is doing extremely well and she is only 4 months. I think you need to look at the temperament of the pups. We have yorkie cousins that are hyper and not very cuddly! I also think it depends on how you raise them..... |
poor OP, I bet you are totally confused now and unfortunately even though the books will say a certain breed acts a certain way there are so many exceptions to that rule it makes it so hard to predict. I have been in several meet up groups with small dogs and each pup is so different, some based on how they were raised or trained but often more by their nature. Good luck with whatever you decide. |

I also agree with the Shih Tzu, they are lovely mellow dogs from what I know. My neighbor has a Min Pin and he is a great dog but he sure is a barker (a lot, all the time maybe more than Sophie Kate). I would be one of the ones not recommending a Yorkie, they are sweet and can be lap dogs but Sophie Kate also requires a lot of exercise (at minimum of 2 30 minutes walks a day). Also in my experience pad training was not so easy, it took a lot of time and restarts before we got it. Good luck, I am glad to see you're researching the breeds. |
